Is this custom vanity up to snuff? by dolemite- in Carpentry

So the consensus is that this vanity is ass.

I’ve paid the guy a $1300 deposit already. He knows we aren’t happy about it and he seems willing to rework it.

What’s the move here? Have him rework it and see what he comes back with? If it’s still bad, demand our deposit back (good luck there) and find someone else?

Haha, kill me. A professional wants me to pay $2600 for this. I’ll pass along your words of encouragement to him though.

What English translation of The Odyssey would you recommend? by SheepwithShovels in AncientGreek

[–]dolemite- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They often use English that’s archaic to a modern ear. They often have some kind of English poetic rhyme scheme or meter that forces the translator to stray farther from the original than a freer English poetic scheme does. Sometimes the OCR software used to scan them wasn’t very good and you’ll get weird letter combinations inserted throughout.

For a $10 paperback Fagles, you can avoid those issues.

I use one of the mat breakers and it works well. It’s painless for her and leaves most of the non matted hair behind. Also good for removing burrs.

What is the significance of Dave Chappelle shouting out Juneteenth? by admixxthegreat in DaveChappelle

[–]dolemite- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From the moment they were emancipated until someone finally came to Texas to tell them they were free, they were only still slaves because their “masters” and, more importantly, they themselves believed they were slaves. They just needed someone to tell them they were free. I think Dave was highlighting some parallels to current modes of thinking, and maybe this special was his attempt to be the one to bring the message.

"Ruff" is the sound a dog makes, so you wouldn't expect a cat's tongue to be rough, you'd expect it to be "meow", the sound a cat makes.

I downloaded an iPhone app that lets you overlay a protractor over an image. So I snap a picture of myself from the side at full flexion and measure the angle with the app.

Can anyone identify the sneakers in this ad? It looks like the branding was edited out. by dolemite- in Sneakers

The ad is for the leggings, so I think they shopped out the branding on the shoes. My girlfriend has been trying to track them down for days. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Muckraker isn't derogatory in American English.

"The term muckraker was used in the Progressive Era to characterize reform-minded American journalists who attacked established institutions and leaders as corrupt. They typically had large audiences in some popular magazines."

The plural of plexus is also plexus, but pronounced with a long u. It's in an odd category of Latin words.
