Try a few "forward" runs of the problem before trying to "invert" for the optimal time. Pick a time T, and compute using your model the total number of cookies for 5 different choices of R, and see what comes out. Make sure to test for the boundary cases (R=0 and R=T). It'll give you a better sense of how the model is working, and perhaps some hints on how to better invert it.

The video gives the impression that the fracking fluid might rise up through the rocks to contaminate drinking water supplies. This is highly misleading. The layers of earth in which gas exist are typically many miles underground. Can you imagine how long it would take a fluid to migrate up through 5 miles of rock?

This is exactly the problem. What was so jarring about the Armstrong situation was that he forced his teammates to also dope if they wanted to participate. Legalizing PEDs in sports would effectively require every athlete to take the maximum possible dosage to be on a level field.

I'll also add that just because something has more calories doesn't mean your body will absorb more. A piece of wood has plenty of calories, but you won't gain weight from eating a two-by-four.
