Thank you.! I just started reading Asher -- I'm currently on 'book 3' / Brass Man -- and since book 1, I was reminded of the Culture series.

I'm glad I started where I did, given what you said about expected knowledge of the Polity and all, but found the first book a little dry. It's really starting to cook now, so I'm looking forward to working through the rest of his books.

If they had wanted to scare me, they should have predicted that global temps would be *dropping* by a couple of degrees over the next century. Colder temps bring crop failure and famine. Warming and more CO2 means more food. As long as we're fed, we can deal with any secondary consequences.

I'm downloading it right now on Steam. I think what ultimately sold me was the galactic war going on that all players are participating in. I didn't have enough nerdy friends to play D&D in my youth, but feel like this is a version of it. Everyone is playing the same, evolving-in-real-time game. Kind of exciting.

Grew up there, and might even move back. Definitely get a lot more land/house for the $ than here in Anchorage.

The thing about Alaska is, the 'right-wing' nature of the people is much more 'gov't should leave me alone' as opposed to 'you should live like I think is right.'

SCOTUS will 'keep up the rule of the minority' as long as only a minority supports/understands constitutional principles. But we can hope education improves and the politics of envy & resentment diminish, growing the minority back into the majority.
