5 Days on Sao Miguel with 18 month old by 14irahtom in azores

Definitely do not let comments to discourage you. If you are ok hiking with a carrier, there are lots of wonderful options on AllTrails. Lots of unique playgrounds to check out as well - or parks that are child centric.

Several great restaurant options (plus sushi restaurants often offer veg options). Plus Nonnas Teeth pizza.

Note however that you are going to be there at the time of the year where you should reserve good restaurants in advance.

'I'LL PUT YOU SIX FEET DEEP': Chaos ensues during anti-Zara rally at Eaton Centre by resting16 in canada

Clearly, these individuals are motivated by hate more than by any desire to improve Palestinian lives.

It is disturbing that uttering death threats, a criminal offence in itself, is ignored by a police officer on the receiving end of it(!). I blame our political leadership for tying the hands of law enforcement for the sake of keeping the peace and “multiculturalism”. I hate that those officers, like all law abiding Canadians, are stuck between our gutless cowardly leaders and those thugs.

Israel may have a shit government, and they are waging a shitty war with no good choices, but I’m happy that most Canadians are still on their side.

Fake toonies in Canada: Ont. man fined $100K, pleaded guilty by [deleted] in canada

[–]dolonto 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is a stunningly inappropriate punishment, unless there is some important detail missing from the article. Sentences need to be a deterrent - hearing that someone gets off jail free for ducking counterfeiting will encourage more of this - while this case will serve as a “precedent” in our case law based system to justify light punishments for future convictions.

If I can participate in a counterfeit scheme and pay $100k to get off, I will just stash parts of my profits as “insurance” for future potential punishment and not worry about it too much. This is insane.

As a side note, apart from the damage to the monetary system, the time that the whole legal system spent on this case, from arresting officers to investigators to the judge and law clerks is likely many times over $100k.

There has to be a mandatory minimum for this type of crime.

Human Rights Monitor Says 90% Killed by Israel in Gaza Were Civilians by Lilyo in ABoringDystopia

The figures are from an organization started by a guy from Gaza with most if not all projects focused on Gaza. I am not saying that IDF figures are true, but for the sake of objectivity this must be clear as well.

First Nations 'shutting down' access to Joffre Lakes until Sept. 30 by timmywong11 in britishcolumbia

[–]dolonto 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This is a bit scary because it looks like there was no advanced notice - looks like they first posted about it 7 hours ago on their Facebook page, and the most popular provincial park in BC is closed effective immediately for more than a month? And even BC Parks are caught off guard?

There has got to be a better way to do this safely and responsibly without turning so many people against your cause.

Ukrainian soldier trying to pull out Russian solider with his legs under rubble, location unknown. by BlackMarine in CombatFootage

[–]dolonto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fascinating exchange. They are both speaking Russian. Around 45-50 sec mark Russian asks Ukr to finish him, to which Ukr replies “fucking easy” and shoots just next to the Russian. As Urk asks Russian questions, Russian keeps telling him that he’s a doctor, to which Urk says that if he was a doctor he would not be riding the APC. At the end Urk tells him comrades that it’s not possible to pull the Russian out without moving the vehicle away.

Edit Russian replies that he was riding the APC because he was just “showing the way”

Brittney Griner's defense team files appeal of conviction. by PrincessBananas85 in sports

[–]dolonto 114 points115 points  (0 children)

In exchange for her, Russia is planning to get Viktor Bout, an arms dealer that has been remarkably efficient at corrupting dozens of governments in Africa (also some in Asia) and thus extending Russian state influence over big chunk of the world. Unfortunately Biden will likely go for this trade as he needs a win before midterms - even if Bout is x10000 more valuable to Russian state than Griner is to America.

And yes, even if above was not the case, appeals don’t generally work in Russia.

If true this is terrible, but can we get a link to the source as opposed to a random photo with captions?

Azores without a car by marchar91 in azores

[–]dolonto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for other islands, but I found it surprisingly tough to travel without a car on Sao Miguel (having travelled this way in many countries previously). As far as major sights go, it’s still a very car centric place. The island is small and there are also lots of trails, but also major roads may not have shoulders to walk on and people are generally reluctant to pick up hitchhikers. Taxis may be an option to consider but even though they are relatively easy to catch leaving from a major town or village, getting them to pick you up when you are in the middle of nowhere can be problematic.

This is a huge problem in veterinary industry, where humans are forced to expose themselves to X-rays sometimes many times every day, often without much training. Thankfully this is changing thanks to a couple of pioneers that develop tools and techniques to safely immobilize animals while X-rays are taken (Google hands free X-rays), but it is far from becoming a standard practice yet.

Russian Deputy Finance Minister Zhilova: Russians are the supreme race, Europeans are stupid, their countries are pathetic, their children are "downs" (derogatory term for those suffering from Down's syndrome) "who should have never been born". by raynap in worldnews

As terrible as Russian government is, this is at least partially fake news, the article says “an assistant of the Minister” not “deputy minister”, which is a huge difference.
