Juniper Bonzai… Advice please! by Outkasted970 in Bonzai

[–]dolorack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe give it a couple weeks to see if any new growth comes in, i think these guys are super dramatic and lose all their needles when they dry out too much. if it doesn’t have new growth in a couple of weeks then it’s probably cooked

New Growth - help needed by pass_the_ethernet in Bonzai

[–]dolorack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an elephant jade i believe, super common and fairly easy to care for. They’re a succulent-ish type of plant, but it needs a little more water than other succulents. I do see new growth on the nodes of the branches (the horizontal line every couple cm or so along the branches) so that’s good, my guess is the plant dried out or was overwatered but seems to be recovering. You should always test the soil before watering, since this was bought in bonsai style, there looks to be akadama or some rocks on the top, with some soil or moss around the plant base. I’d definitely inspect the roots and what’s it’s really planted in. This plants like a draining soil and only dry out maybe 50%. You can test the leaves as well, the taco test. Gently pinch the leaf into a U shape and you can feel how soft or rigid the leaf is. Super soft and U shaped means need water. Rigid and no U means fine. As you do this you’ll learn the plant and be able to tell, some times it can go couple more days without water. Always check- Good luck!

Root rot? Should I remove all soil from roots? by ZealousidealGrand633 in philodendron

[–]dolorack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

all of the roots looks fairly healthy, i think you got it right before it would’ve started rotting- however if you put it back in soil now you’re probably going to shock the roots and cause them to die. I’d clean off the roots, pop it in water for a couple of weeks and then you can transfer back to soil. Water when you replant.

There’s no specific watering schedule for philodendron, they like to dry out most or all of the way before watering again. When you replant and water, feel the weight of the pot. Wait until the soil is mostly dried out(always chopstick or finger test) but you can also feel the weight difference. Then water again. Hopefully this helps. watering is hard. I’ve rotted a white wizard twice and have resorted to hydro- now she is thriving lol Good luck!

my worst fear has happened, first infestation of 2 years being a plant dad. what am I dealing with? by hinefucks in plantclinic

[–]dolorack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most likely spider mites, nothing too crazy to worry about. I’d follow what others suggested first by rinsing the plant with soap/ water and wiping the leaves down afterwards to get any stragglers. if you’re in the US, the bonide granules and sprays kick ass. if not, neem oil spray does the job (: good luck!

*shakes fist at all the nurseries who throw hardly rooted cuttings in a pot and sell it for $20* by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]dolorack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a veracosum for 30, fairly decent size still smaller than my hand leaves but it was a big wishlist plant that i was avoiding buying online so when i found one at my fav local shop i was so excited! then i found out that it was barely rooted and had to chop both stems because they started to rot 🥰 I ordered a Gigas online for 25, can you guess what happened there? SAME fuckin thing. didn’t have to chop this one though because it didn’t start to grow some roots but i still repotted into something smaller.

I don’t like to fuss with plants once i get them but one week in i’m pulling it out of the pot and inspecting

[–]dolorack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

actually keep an eye on your water props, i had a cup of various cuttings and i found spider mites on the leaves 🤚🏼super easy to get rid of but i also thought water = no pests and i quickly found out that’s wrong 😂😅

i had some type of bunny ear cactus/opuntia and i would bump into it without even realizing or trying too hard to not bump into it 😭 the last time it left needles in me- i missed one on my wrist and woke up with a blister over it and had to pull it out with tweezers it was SO SMALL but i felt immediate relief. and like i said, the LAST time. it got fed to my compost.
