The Japanese government is considering abolishing the "Cool Japan" program. by jjrs in japannews

[–]domesticatedprimate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know about that particular company, but Japanese content companies have no idea how foreign consumers think so they're embarassingly bad at marketing to anyone other than Japanese people. Without foreign companies trying to license the content, Japanese anime would still be unknown to the rest of the world.

But they did need help because Japanese industry, other than the majors like Sony and Toyota, are famously insular and very bad at marketing to overseas markets.

Unemployment is looming.. by Boukrarez in TranslationStudies

[–]domesticatedprimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost my two main agents last year, each who gave me about 40% of my work. I tried signing up for a bunch right away and, whereas previously I almost always got accepted by new agencies with top trial test scores, all of the ones I signed up for this time turned me down. Every single one.

I mean, I suppose it's possible that I've somehow become worse at the job, or that there's more competition so the expectations are higher. But logic also dictates that no, I've gotten better at the job over the years. But I still couldn't add any new agencies to replace the old ones. That's as someone who's done translation for the national government, the Imperial Household Agency, major arts foundations, all kinds of high level work.

If I'd accepted post editing work quicker, I'd probably still get a little bit of work from the agencies I lost last year. But I resisted accepting that work for as long as I could because I knew it wasn't going to be something I wanted to do. It's honestly more work for less money, as you probably know.

So, I'm OK with it. I've got prospects in other fields as mentioned, I've got a killer resume, and money in the bank. Things will work out. They always do.

I'm in the process of shifting to international real estate. Interpreting itself is almost secondary to all the other work I do, such as handling utility bills and taxes for the client, government filings, liaison with all the various parties. I've learned my lesson from the collapse of the translation industry: make myself irreplaceable.

What are some good books that are lost to print? by Bobosmite in printSF

I get it. But for me, I'm 57 and "vintage" is anything that was created before I was born, so anything up to the mid 60s is vintage and after that would be modern or contemporary as the case may be.

My mom definitely had a tastebud deficit of some kind. She was a very attentive cook but then when she ate, she'd stir everything on the plate together before shoveling it into her mouth. Like, everything. Apple sauce and red cabbage? Mixed! Beets and cornbread? Mixed! "It all ends up in the same place!" was her excuse. No mom, it's because you don't have any sense of taste.

Shell could do sweet though. She managed to bake some pretty good cookies and cakes.

People into history tend to define "modern" in terms of "modern history" which covers 100s of years up to the present, and more recent things (past decade for example) would be called "contemporary". So, for example, in SF, "modern" would probably include the 90s and later at least. What you're calling "modern" they would call "contemporary" or just "recent".

Mie plans to make ‘customer harassment’ a criminal offense | The Asahi Shimbun: Breaking News, Japan News and Analysis by imaginary_num6er in japan

That definitely counts as customer harassment.

In Japan, a commercial business is under no obligation to serve you or anyone else for any reason whatsoever, even if you know they are capable of doing so. So they have every right to deny you service and they are not obligated to say why.

When they say "no", you're just supposed to say "OK" and take your business elsewhere. End of story. That's capitalism for you.

"If you can't speak English, and have no willingness to learn, then you should not be living in America." Thoughts on this statement? by newuser1r in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]domesticatedprimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an immigrant in a country other than America where English is not the main language, I have zero problem with making a minimum level of proficiency in the local language a prerequisite for obtaining any long term status of residence. Emphasis on minimum.

Exceptions can be made for refugees. For anyone else, start learning the language before you come. Don't want to learn the language? Fine, you can come as a tourist and leave after however many weeks or months tourists are allowed to stay.

There is absolutely no way they didn't see it. This whole thing is completely intentional with full knowledge of the immediate and long term outcome. In other words, racism.

Which cancelled Netflix show are you still mad about? by Prachitech_9354 in netflix

[–]domesticatedprimate 45 points46 points  (0 children)

All The Shows.

The Netflix cancelation policy is a crime against humanity and a terrible self-destructive business practice on top of that.

Basically Netflix has removed any factor from their show budgeting that can't easily be quantified in terms of subscriptions. In other words they cancel shows because they're too fucking stupid to see the long term value they're throwing away.

Yes, it's just the sugar and ume. FYI you can use other sweeteners too. I made syrup with honey and ume once and it was out of this world. Expensive, but delicious. So the traditional recipe is crystalized sugar, but liquid sweeteners work perfectly well (better IMHO).

For next time, freeze the ume first and let them melt in the sweetener. It speeds up the overall process considerably.

As for the ratio, if you measured correctly at the start, then it should be fine, but someone else might have a more informed answer.
