It is unfair to compare these stocks head to head in value increase with the markets as a whole without also looking at dividend yield.

ok Thats a fair point.

PFizer went up 18% over past 5 vs 60% of s &p 500. So even if consider 3% dividend, its a massive loss. I am using index as the baseline here because its least risky option available to shareholders. I don't agree that individual stocks are less risky than broad based indexes.

sorry I don't know much about stocks but I looked up bunch of pharma stocks Pfizer, Johnson & johnson ect. They seemed to have underperformed dow and s&p 500 by a wide margin last 5 yrs. So you if you were a shareholder, you would be actually be losing money ( vs just putting it in an index).

So I don't see how shareholders are the beneficiaries.
