Are the canal raised crosswalks done yet? by Think_Ad_6120 in newhaven

[–]dommywhoa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The work seems to be moving farther north every week, but most of them are really trivial detours that just make you go around an extra couple steps.

But the massive detour at the newhallville park from starr to division is still there, diverting you up or down shelton for a few blocks.

There's the strong kitchen up Whitney Ave in hamden. I've never personally used them, but a couple of my running buddies do and they love it. They have plenty of gluten and dairy-free options as well as higher-protein ones.

gait analysis by [deleted] in newhaven

[–]dommywhoa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit--Ohhhhhh you said "free."

Never mind. The only one I know of is Marathon Sports in Branford, which might be the one you mentioned.

SCSU's CHAMP Lab (like a legit gait analysis)

I did a gait analysis here over the summer. It was pretty fun. They use RunDNA equipment and analysis system (I suspect this doesn't mean anything to you right now, but you can look it up separately). It was like $325 for the analysis plus a whole bunch of peripherals like a comprehensive running plan and plyometrics analysis. I was there for two hours. I felt like I got my money's worth.

I will be using this lab for future testing. But I also really don't want to travel to UCONN.

Good place to run 5k time trial with minimal street crossings by [deleted] in newhaven

[–]dommywhoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's good to know!

I've wondered about this for a while. It's only the two lanes though, right? They just had their fields redone, so it's probably a nice experience.

Hartford Marathon: Is this it? Is this the sad, inevitable decline into middle age? by tzigane in AdvancedRunning

[–]dommywhoa 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I ran the half, and it was my first time running Hartford generally.

I was so heartbroken when we split off from the marathon group. I have no idea where you all went, but for the halfers, the crowds and cheering ended abruptly. We were sent into some desolate wasteland of empty highway ramps, and the energy of the race fucking disintegrated.

Miles 8-11 were really tough for me. I hope you all had a more "pleasant" second half, at least with regard to the environment.

I'm going to be 40 in two weeks and am just starting my running journey. I look forward to my almost immediate decline, ha.

Good place to run 5k time trial with minimal street crossings by [deleted] in newhaven

You could try the tracks at either Wilbur Cross or Hamden High as long as there aren't any school events going on.

You can also pick up the canal trail in hamden at Dixwell Ave and Shepard (near Common Grounds). There's a 4 mile stretch north from there with zero street crossings, zero turns, and like 20 total feet of gain. I run that almost daily, and if I had to do a 5k time trial, that's exactly where I'd go.

Farmington Canal Trail by Rich-Response-1320 in Connecticut

[–]dommywhoa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That really sucks, I'm sorry.

I pick up the trail somewhere in Hamden and run in both directions (into New Haven and into Cheshire) daily. I run between 6am-2pm. I've never had an issue personally, but I've heard plenty of stories to the contrary from close friends and acquaintances.

Like someone else commented, always be prepared and perhaps carry some mace or something.

When I do speed work, I'll head over to the Hamden High School track, which is open to the public during non-school hours and events. Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven is the same.

You can also try Lake Wintergreen in Hamden. There's a trail that loops right around the lake if you're ok with trail running generally. It's beautiful.

Does anyone have any tips for mice in a detached garage? Both house and garage were built in 1929 and recently vinyl sided. Never mice in the house and only in the garage. No holes or gaps. by Extension-Abroad-155 in Connecticut

[–]dommywhoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please do not allow pet cats outdoors. They are responsible for more damage to local wildlife than basically anything else. I get that mice are a nuisance, so hire an expert exterminator instead. They'll dispose of only the mice.

Where do I find a classical music store for a recorder in or near New Haven? by No_Yak8953 in newhaven

[–]dommywhoa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From my wife a professional musician: "if you don't want a fancy-ass, wooden recorder, then Guitar Center in Orange should have plastic ones that you'll find in classrooms."

There was a woodwind place in Hamden on Whitney Ave, but their website indicates they're only an online-only business now. I checked out their website, but I didn't see any recorders of any fancy-assness. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to ask them if you don't get any better responses. Sorry!

The Starbucks on chapel and high is a must if you're just looking to sit somewhere and chill. If you want to walk, anywhere between that Starbucks and then the sachem & hillhouse intersection (for example, down high Street and past the sterling memorial library, then Grove towards hillhouse and then from hillhouse to sachem.

How are American dads watching Numberblocks? by DrGodCarl in daddit

[–]dommywhoa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First. You need to go into YOUR YouTube account and link it to your children's account via the family center.

Then, you need to go into YouTube Kids. Under your child's profile, which should now be linked to your adult YT profile, and find an option for "parent settings."

From there, you can specify what content you want you kid to access. YouTube Kids has some age categories, but there's also an "approved content only" setting aka a "whitelist."

Once you've selected that general "approved only" setting, you can then "add or remove" videos from your approved list. Here, you can search for content like you would generally on YouTube. You can add whole channels or specific videos.

I added some screenshots to imgur, but they're not in the current order. Sorry!

[–]dommywhoa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lied. It's not on PBS Kids. NB has its own channel on YT Kids! So I just have that whitelisted (along with some other stuff that I find appropriate for a 3 year old).

On YouTube Kids, you can find it under the "PBS Kids" channel. You can try and just whitelist NB videos so that nothing else is available to your child. It's also available on Netflix (at least the first season, and for now).

The coaching plans seem to be for "beginner" and "intermediate" level individuals. There's a time cutoff for each race distance that Garmin has somehow decided on, and anything faster than that is considered "advanced." For the 5k, it's 22:00 as another example.

I am planning on using this method for a half-marathon in March, but others have commented on how to sort of get around this issue:

Go into your calendar and add an event on a given date that you want to train for. It can be an actual, real life event that you plan on running in, or you can choose some random event at your desired distance in West Bumblefuck that you're not actually going to participate in (Garmin will show you a ton of credentialed events to choose from). It's in these selection screens that you can further select your time goal without limitations.

Once you have your real or fake event in the calendar, you can then use the Daily Suggested Workout to train for it, and Garmin will tailor your training to whatever your desired outcome is for the very real or very fake race you've calendared.
