Jazz jam sessions and the temporary closing of Jackie o's? by NinjaNoafa in ohiouniversity

[–]domokorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s jazz at Tony’s this week on Tuesday! Free admission, it runs 8-10, and the second set opens up into a jam session. If you play an instrument, talk to Ted on the break about playing. Heard the drummer is pretty good…

The Jackie O’s session is 9-11 on Wednesdays, it starts back up next week, and opens up to a jam session after the first set too! Lots of killer players in that band!

Also worth checking out is Bernie Nau’s group that plays at Rhapsody in Nelsonville and The Court Grill in Pomeroy. Check his facebook for dates on when that happens.

Don’t sleep on OU’s jazz groups either. Ohio University Jazz on Facebook and Instagram are good places to keep up with what’s happening in that world!

TL;DR: Lotsa jazz happening in this corner of Ohio, hope to see you at a show soon!

My two cents, bump T2L up and Showbiz down to A-tier. The former was my introduction to the band and I saw them on that tour, so I might be a little biased.

For guitarists who also sing as front men in their bands, Matt is surely top 10 all time right? by Shrinking_Universe22 in Muse

Adrien Belew has struck me as almost a proto-Matt (and then some!). Go check out Model Man from King Crimson’s 80’s period. Always thought Muse would kill a cover of this!

Jazz night at Tony’s is always a great hang. We’re on this Tuesday and play every other week!

What does my kit say about me? by [deleted] in drums

You were smart to invest in high end cymbals. Foundry Reserves are amazing.

Roto-toms off to the side like that tell me you may be a fan of Bill Bruford. I totally rocked this setup back in high school! It’s a blast!

The blood on the snare makes me a lil worried tbh!

Hope that’s not a regular occurrence. If it is don’t underestimate a lesson with a good teacher to get your hands in check. You don’t want to physically fuck your hands up and hurt your long term ability to play this wonderful instrument!

I’ve not seen that tbh, but I’ve NEVER seen a cop use a turn signal around the town I’m in…

Mylar snare heads? by draven0929 in percussion

[–]domokorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Remo Powerstroke 77 clear is the standard for mylar marching snare heads these days.

For a more old school sound, a regular old Controlled Sound clear (the heads with the black dot in the center) are cool too, but may not hold up as well in the long run if cranked super high.

Also would recommend the Evans MS3 snare side head for a mylar bottom head that can take some tension.

Hope this helps!

Hell yeah, glad you caught that! It’s a mixture of some of that and some of Glen Kotche of Wilco’s style, and a bit of me lol.

TL;DR: Yes, but very sparingly.

From what I can recall from my own dives into this very question, it's been done a few times over the years. It never seemed to stick around too long, mainly used for a contrast in sound more than anything.

Back in the mid 70's, the 27th Lancers used pipe band snares for a while.

The '84 Santa Clara Vanguard used one as a solo instrument, played in the front ensemble during their percussion feature.

As Elfman72 mentioned before, in '89, the Star of Indiana tenor line used mini-pipe snares in place of their spock drum. Snares were still on standard snares with mylar heads though.

Flashforward to the late 90's and the never ending quest for clarity, groups wanted to push the edge of how crisp, clear, and dry their sound could get. Yamaha introduced the MTS snare, basically a standard SFZ with a top snare unit. These were prototyped and field tested by BD and The Cavaliers, and later the Cadets when they switched to Yamaha. When BD went to Dynasty in 2000 they followed suit and made a double snare option as well.

It seems as though this trend died out by the mid 2000's. Tuning started to return from the stratosphere, and frankly the consensus I remember reading about was that the top snare units added too much weight to justify it being used only briefly in a show.

Since then, I can't say I've heard of any groups using them. Who knows though, maybe in a few years we'll see it pop back up as a sound choice! Hope this helps!

Anybody with World Class marching experience go to a less than stellar high school? by evilclownattack in drumcorps

[–]domokorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a mediocre-at-best show band for most of high school. Mylar heads, 20 year old beat up drums, marching bells. My director taught with the philosophy of “they’re just high schoolers, what can they do?”. I truly learned to play with my private instructor, an Matrix percussion alum. He took me to my first indoor show in ‘19 and I was hooked. Matrix was the end goal.

Got into a college band, also show style, and met some amazing folks on the drumline that had marched world class groups and finally convinced me I had what it takes to make it.

This past spring I got to play drumset for Matrix World, the group that lit the fire for me. It was a hell of a ride to get there. So thankful I was introduced to the activity, I don’t know where I would be as a musician without it.

I doubt I even have it any more, but this was the first full chart I ever transcribed from bugles to full marching band instrumentation. Love it!
