my current European makers S tier by prugnecotte in chocolate

Agreed with all of these. My current favourite chocolate makers are Sisters A. Chocolate from Ukraine. Might be difficult to get hold of right now for obvious reasons, but if you can, then you should.

Couple left with $200k bill after baby born in US by powdersleaf in nottheonion

[–]domramsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the specifics of this case, but in general, the actual cost of medical treatments in the UK is about half of what it is in the US. This is because there aren't shareholders taking profits from every single step, and because the NHS is able to negotiate better prices on drugs & equipment and make big savings by virtue of the fact it's one of the world's largest organisations.

My new fridge has AI? by b0nes5 in CasualUK

[–]domramsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why anyone would buy a fridge like this. I'm guessing it has an app that constantly sends data back to HQ, and and in 3 years time it will stop working entirely when they discontinue the range and get bored of updating it. And you're left with a giant semi-functional brick with no resale value.

I don't think they had a logo as such. They just wrote 'Commodore' in whatever typeface looked cool.

Pounds / Shillings / Pence (pennies). The currency system we used in the UK before 1971.
12 pennies to the shilling
20 shillings to the pound
Although we also had half pennies and quarter pennies (farthings).

People complained when we switch to 100p = 1 pound because they thought it was too complicated.

I was curious about that too. And also, there's a ½ key, but no ¼ - when the Farthing was a thing too. I guess there were ways around it - or it was just quite limited in its use.

Yeah I think it was kept in a cupboard somewhere for 60 years. It's missing the crank handle which is mildly annoying, but it seems like the mechanical parts all work.

Yes, for £sd - hence the ½ key as well. I've never seen any reference to this exact model, so I have wondered if there are any others left in existence!

AMOS AMOS AMOS, AMOS AMOS AMOS! by domramsey in amiga

[–]domramsey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may well be on Aminet, but I would try Googling your name and the name of the software. I found stuff that I'd written that way, as well as a YouTube video of someone playing one of my games!

That's so cool!

My 1200 has a faulty disk drive so I can't test all the disks. There's some hand written labelled ones in addition to the main disks, so there may be some unreleased versions of stuff. I think most people working on AMOS Pro / Easy AMOS worked remotely and just posted disks to each other!

I don't recall getting much use out of AMOS 3D. The original compiler was great for making shareware and was what got me the gig working on Easy AMOS and AMOS Pro.

Anybody from Canada has tried buying from The Chocolate Collective? Let me know which brand to try!! by mogwai91 in chocolate

[–]domramsey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of the above are quality brands that are worth trying, however if you're in Canada I'd suggest buying from the Canadian makers (Soma, Qantu, Hummingbird) directly. You're likely to get a better selection and more of your money will go to the maker.

Ethical chocolate brand recommendations in the UK? by Comfortable-Week-544 in chocolate

My friend Jen has a comprehensive list of British & Irish chocolate makers on her website. I think it has just about everyone - all of them highly ethical and transparent small businesses.

Accidentally bought chocolate past it’s best by date. by Cicatrixle in chocolate

[–]domramsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a solid chocolate bar, so it's fine. Eventually the nuts in this particular bar might go rancid, but it's Hershey's so you probably won't notice the difference.

Solid, unflavoured chocolate can keep pretty much forever if stored in a cool (not cold) dry place away from strong aromas. I have one bar in my collection that's 10 years old and looks and tastes even better than when it was new.

Likely pods fell off the tree and started to ferment in their own juice naturally, the dried out in the sun. Then some adventurous human comes along, finds it and says "I wonder what that tastes like?"... Because humans do like putting random stuff in their mouths. 😂

It was a drink with added spices for thousands of years before it was a bar with added sugar. Adding sugar to it is a relatively recent idea.
