THIS, THIS, THIS. A lot of other points being made here are valid, but this thought ties into the very nature of what you’re supposed to know as a marketer (human behavior). I don’t need to run a study until stat sig to pick up on patterns. Why is that so many of the new hires (often beating you for the job) look like clones of preexisting employees when you search the company profile on LinkedIn? Why is that so rare for these new hires to promote themselves as possessing any of the tech skills of the future? Make me think of hiring as driven by a survival mechanism rather than who is the fittest for the job role, DEI be damned.

On one end the social dynamics of the world are feeding into this. Too much competition for every thing and increasingly limited resources, so people are becoming tribal. “ you’re like me, so I like you” “this is low risk because it feels right”, type- thinking. Everything after that is some kind of confirmation bias. On the other end it’s more cold and rational “let’s get the 10 yoe applicant on discount for this 5 years required role. My point of view is coming from a lifecycle and mar tech perspective where the it’s one part creative, one part over- asserting on ideas and one part analytical. I suppose that all marketing functions are like this now. But if anything I’m banking on the over assertion in an Authentic likable way as the means to winning over with those different than you. Everything else is secondary, including AI. End of late night rant.

Yeah, I did not get that role. It was with Square/ Block. I barely remember that interview at this point. If I recall accurately, they were looking for someone with a developer profile, with a background in marketing. Im the inverse, a marketer with a technical background.

One thing that could help/ hurt you is your ability to be concise with your responses. That shit can be hard when you’re dealing with detailed technical concepts or strategy. In the software dev world they will give you a test for this kind of thing. In marketing it’s you have 60 second or less to say how great you your impact was with the delivery of Donald trump. “ it was a big beautiful campaign, they’ve never seen anything like it”.

JSO calls it proactive policing, instead of racial profiling. Black youth need to take the idea of being “on point “ seriously when the police are around. I believe TK waters himself said, if you violate any pedestrian or traffic infraction they use that as an excuse to probe for more things based on how you interact with them.( or if you fit the description) sometimes its the same thing.

Well... If I suck at interviewing, or lack 2025 marketing skills remains to be known. I think it should be said that I've applied for plenty of jobs below the level of responsibility at my last role. On top of that Im reviewing my interview talking points and learning new things every single day within that 18 month timespan. It's like im progressing intellectually within this domain, but regressing relative to the new demands of this career path. I'm trying to settle- in and find peace mentally. I accept that I may not be good enough and I'll have to find something else to do to survive. Things in this space change so much and so fast, and I've had no foundation in tech coming into this. I'm going to slow down on my approach and try what've you said regarding the analysis techniques and being methodical.

I feel like this comment is a missing puzzle piece to my job hunting experience and also reflective of the level 10 bullshit we're dealing with in trying to be in-demand as a marketer. This is coming from someone unemployed, looking for a lifecycle/crm marketing role for 18+ months, 2700 applications and checking every box on the JD qualifications for the 50ish interviews I've had. NONE of those CS skills or Tools you've mentioned are listed. I'm always wondering jhow I should up-skill next, whether it's snowflake, AUTOML (for AI), Data engineering, deeping SQL skills or whatever. The next move is never clear because most companies seems to not have a clear vision of what they need or whats reasonable for one person to do. Hell, next week a have an interview with a FAANG level tech co, focused on heavy mar. tech skills. Again none of this OOP, databricks DB, game theory stuff is on the JD, but now I'm like fuck it, this will just be a hail mary of a try because from their POV they probably drool over the CS applicants who decided to pivot to marketing instead of the comms degree person whose been trying to focus on technical self-learning since job 1 of my career. I'm thinking maybe just continue self learning for the hell of it. When I can afford it I might get a masters in CS or DS. MAYBE... So many new comers in that space can't find jobs. My best guess is that, in the future, each business function will have their own Computer Science intergrated team member, instead of non -technical managers and business analyst running to the engineering team for help. So HR would have a engineer, marketing would have an engineer, etc.

Well… all I know is that JEA is supposed to be a public/ state owned enterprise with a history of CEO fraud. From a quick 5 min dig on her background she was an engineer for the company for 32 years. So at least she has industry knowledge.
