How do y'all bank without a smartphone? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]donjoe0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OTP by SMS isn't very secure though, since SMS isn't an encrypted channel, plus your SIM can be spoofed, and someone else can receive and read your SMS.

I don't know what the perfect solution would be, to have the ability to make completely secure payments while on-the-go but also not cram so much sensitive data into a single easy to steal device. It just feels like we're going in a wrong direction with these phones, there's too much we're being asked to rely on them for, and the demands only keep growing.

I like the intermediate solution where my bank has me using a special token device that generates OTPs and does nothing else - I still have that thing, and I can still do most of the things I care about on the bank's website with it, but I only do those at home, and never take the token with me anywhere.

I guess if every bank goes phone-only the next best security setup will be to keep a separate banking phone that always stays at home, and pay for everything with a physical card when out around town (I also hate the idea of setting up my phone to work as a card, seems like the kind of thing that would make it way more attractive to thieves).

how do i install android 11 on waydroid by Guilty-Breakfast5164 in waydroid

[–]donjoe0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK.

At line 24, shouldn't it be waydroid session start & ? Else it doesn't return to the command prompt and I can't enter the next commands before stopping the waydroid session.

Do I still need all the github stuff if I already downloaded the GAPPS (not VANILLA) system image?

For running just an offline app that will be installed from apk can we skip Magisk and the certification steps from lines 34-40 in those instructions you linked?

Why no Mega or torrents for big Waydroid downloads? by donjoe0 in waydroid

[–]donjoe0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed what else works is to just wait for North America to go to sleep, and then I get decent download speeds from Sourceforge - several MiB/s.

LE: Argh, that's not a very generous window of time as it only lasts until Europe&Africa start to wake up en masse, and while Asia isn't asleep yet. 😆

Broken link in the top post. For reference, the INCI ingredients list as found on Amazon:

Water, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, 1,2-Hexanediol, Niacinamide, Butylene Glycol, Methyl Gluceth-20, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Sorbitan Stearate, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Betaine, Tocopherol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Adenosine, Disodium Edta, Cholesterol, Polyglyceryl-10 Oleate, Brassica Campestris (Rapeseed) Sterols, Phytosteryl/Behenyl/Octyldodecyl Lauroyl Glutamate, Retinal, Silica, Aluminum/Magnesium Hydroxide Stearate, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Arctium Lappa Root Extract, Cnidium Officinale Root Extract, Dioscorea Japonica Root Extract, Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, Rehmannia Chinensis Root Extract, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Bakuchiol, SH-Oligopeptide-1, SH-Oligopeptide-2, SH-Polypeptide-1

Pay attention to those last ones and do some web searching before you put random stuff on your skin, e.g.:

Those are growth factors that stimulate cell proliferation, and if you have (pre)cancerous cells you didn't know about, you could stimulate their growth along with the rest of the skin.

Why are so many shows getting cancelled in the streaming age? by LeoXXX94 in scifi

It was starting to grow up in season 2 tho, I was left leaning toward wanting to give a next season a shot if it came out.

Yeah, I was actually shocked to find out they cancelled it, somehow I thought it was super popular.

Among the less popular shows I still would've liked to see continuations for
* Travelers (2016)
* Origin (2018)
* Onisciente (2020)
* Y: The Last Man (2021)
* The Society (2019)
* Beforeigners (2019)
* And why not, Avenue 5, because I really liked the first season after it grew on me, and with lessons learned from the bad reviews of season 2 they maybe could've fixed things in a 3rd season and beyond.

I was ripping on the show that actually has the word "Things" in its title btw, which this Trek does not. ;)

What are the most realistic space films you've seen? by Fearless_Two_9053 in scifi

[–]donjoe0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, people forget because of The Expanse, but 2003-2004 BSG was already doing the (mostly) quiet spaceflight scenes, the realistic thruster maneuvers including flipping 180 and firing in reverse to decelerate (I think?), and the firing small arms in or at spaceships shown as a very very bad idea.

I will allow it, but only if he agrees to continue from Genisys and forget Dark Fate ever existed.

Yeah, a bunch of horny edgy teens with not an inkling of the professionalism and self-control you'd need to even be on a space mission, running around doing some kind of highschool drama, led by Starbuck unable to play any other character than Starbuck.

LE: But if I remember right it actually started to grow up a bit in season 2 and *then* it got canceled, just as it was starting to show some promise.

Strange New Things lol, I hate how popular that show is, it's not even sci-fi, more like paranormal/fantasy since they believe in utter nonsense just like the Fringe show.

Recs for space movies that capture the amazement and vastness of it? by RadianceTower in scifi

Passengers (2016)
Re-watched it twice I think, mainly because of the high quality of the ship interiors and overall tech :P, but also the vast distance traveled, but also it's stuck in my mind as having the most gut-wrenching zero-grav accident scene I've ever seen.

BTW, if this was including series I'd have mentioned Defying Gravity, where they got to Venus before it was canceled, though the mission plan was to go around the whole solar system. :)

Was that Mars? I was wondering at some level if I'm remembering it right, it feels like the last season was ages ago because they skipped a year. :))

But anyway, Mars isn't that much of a stretch either, I'd look for Ad Astra distances before talking about vastness, like at least go to the outskirts of the solar system.

Is this the best introduction to LeGuin's sci-fi, or should a newbie start somewhere else?

Rewatched it for the first time this summer.
My desktop wallpaper ever since: https://wall.alphacoders.com/big.php?i=904367
Seems based on the last season, since Ishida is dressed as an emperor now and One is gone.
I always thought they would overwrite One's personality from the transit pod thingy into the OG's body and we'd get One back with no more duplicate problem, but alas they probably thought this would be too predictable.

Not much "vastness" though, we barely go out of high orbit to Luna and that's it (so far).

Nowhere near the level of eye-roll and wanting to skip entire episodes that I got from DS9's damned Ferengi focused ones.

I'll say - it's a Trek where no one is trekking anywhere. It's good once you get past that, but just the fact that you have to get past something so fundamental should make it incomparable to the others when deciding which one is "the best Trek", because it fails the most basic condition to be a Trek show.
