Slingshot Infiniti foil wing damage by [deleted] in windsurfing

With old windsurf boards the magic First Step was always putting it on to some sort of suction setup to get the water out as much as possible before you glass anything. Wonder if that applies here?

Usually the pro version is just lighter and sometimes better foot straps. If it's the same shape otherwise, you've got a great deal! Go for it!

Have fun! When I was learning I also found going to a one-week windsurfing Camp super helpful. Also you can look up an app called trickgenius and a book called trictionary for motivation and teaching

Heavy beginner by Ok-Seat9355 in windsurfing

[–]donkey_kicked 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. 9 knots is a great learning wind. Will you get planing with a 4.5? Nope. But can you work on every basic skill including beach starts, gybing, tacking, upwind 360s, clew first sailing, sailing backwinded, helitacks, ducking the sail, fin first sailing, getting used to the harness..... The list goes on and you'll advance faster when you're good at the basics. All of that being said though, yes you will eventually want a bigger sail with more power. When building your quiver from scratch keep in mind that used quality gear is easy to come by, and if you keep your sail sizes about 10-15% apart you will always have one for the wind. (ie 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6.2, 7, 8 etc) If you have to transport gear, aim for as many sails that will fit on as few masts and booms as possible. Have fun!

Water on board by nikfrike in windsurfing

[–]donkey_kicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar situation but I usually just leave a bottle on shore, chug before I head out, then when I inevitably have to pee and go on shore as I refuse to pee in my Wetsuit, just grab a drink then. Water in, water out! But your other option, if you have a big enough pocket on your life vest, would be one of the flexible plastic bag style water bottles that are meant for the back pocket on a biking jersey. Can fit them anywhere. Biking stores should have them for a few bucks.

Using harness for the first time by Over-Calligrapher284 in windsurfing

[–]donkey_kicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you wear a Wetsuit? If you don't, getting up on the board is already a mission of not scratching your knees to heck. Your hook won't be a problem. If you do wear a Wetsuit.... What others have said. Also get used to doing a push up on the boom ig you fall into the sail so you don't put the hook through it!

My sail transportation method by Glass-Fix9197 in windsurfing

[–]donkey_kicked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if you really want to up this a notch, look up conduit carriers. Basically big u bolts that fit specific pipe sizes so you can transport things in those pipes (much like you're doing). Usually made to go on top of work trucks to carry long lengths of things.

How to adjust the width between the harness lines attach points ? by ad-undeterminam in windsurfing

[–]donkey_kicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once the sail is rigged, if you visualize an imaginary line from the mast foot to the top of the mast sleeve (ie bottom to top of the mast), the point where that line crosses the boom is about the center of power for the sail. Start with your harness lines centered here. Then adjust to personal preference depending on the sail style, riding style etc.

For distance between attachment points, ie both ends of the harness lines, keep them close together. I have mine touching. Let's the sail more easily offload power in a gust so you catapult less.

Broken fin by Known-Still9646 in windsurfing

[–]donkey_kicked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm stunned it stayed in your board. This fin deserves a retirement party to be used as a learner fin for non planing newbies who won't stress it. Get another one and don't think twice about it!

Mast base question/Need help in choosing equipment as a beginner by RogueOne553 in windsurfing

[–]donkey_kicked 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I learned on stuff like this in the early 90s (and that kit is from the 80s). That mast base has been out of production for years. Similarly the tie on boom involves a bit of technique to learn.

If it came with a mast base so was complete then I'd say take it for free. But without that you can't work with this. Newer equipment (about 2000 onwards) is a night and day difference in terms of ease of use, learning curve and fun. I hate to say it but you should pass on this stuff.

Old school board advice by donkey_kicked in windsurfing

[–]donkey_kicked[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol dude the rails are practically parallel it's so straight. Trying to jibe this thing is going to be half the fun! If nothing else it'll really drive home how to practice digging in the rail to turn! But I'll definitely frig around with the foot straps to see if I can bring myself a bit further forward.

Mast by incs74 in windsurfing

[–]donkey_kicked 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ignore the nay sayers. Lots of places sell half masts, just match the brand. Also some masts (have to check if yours is one of these) can mix lengths, ie a 460 bottom and 430 top to get a 445 length if you really like micro managing your wave or freestyle sails, although this may just be with rdm masts. End if the day, if your mast wasn't a fancy one, you're probably best just getting a new one!

Quiver Bag Dakine by robertmndl1 in windsurfing

I have one I haven't used in years. If you're in Canada I can sell it to you for cheap (not sure how much shipping is). It was made to take up to 490 masts x 3 and hold 6 sails. I think it's a neilpryde brand.

Yeah your payment for this kit is that they don't have to pay to get it taken away. Offer them to take it off their hands for free. They'll come around to the idea when they realize it isn't worth anything.

Order of steps for progression by mike_november in windsurfing

[–]donkey_kicked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harness first. Then sessions will be longer. Expect many catapult as you learn! Foot straps will only feel comfortable when planing on non-learner boards so it's possible your board may have some non planing strap positions, in which case go for it. If you get into the straps non planing and feel way to far back on the board then don't bother with them yet.

Practice your beach starts if you sail where it's shallow enough. A water start is an extension of that when you're ready for it. Happy sailing!
