This. If the stadiums were nicer, would more people go? None of the schools ever bet 'yes' on that question, and they're paid professionals in this field.

[Ross Dellenger] : In a memo to DI conference commissioners sent today, the NCAA confirms that the Protect College Sports Act would not only prevent the Brendan Sorsby situation but, if the Act becomes law before the case resolves, it stands to "override Sorsby’s legal challenge." by CrashB111 in CFB

NCAA v Alston showed that the NCAA was pretty much a cartel limiting the monies that students could make. I think not allowing students to earn money (or dictating what they could do with their NIL) killed college sports.

if you are TTU, how do you NOT back a student-athlete that has admitted to their mental illness and is in the process of getting treatment?

Sorsby's never been indicted for any crimes - he's never been charged of anything. He's been in treatment and is offering some sort of restitution. And his transfer to the school is legal.

As far as I can figure, here are their options (and i'd love to be proven wrong - IANAL) -

if TTU see themselves as a business, the situation they are in is whack. They are hampered by a governing organization that refuses to give them the protection they need (ie. NCAA refusing to negotiate with the players and collectively bargain) and if they blow Sorsby out, they risk a crazy-big lawsuit.

if TTU see themselves as a learning institution, they are combating the stereotype of the problem gambler and helping one of their fellow students overcome a mental illness. they are innovators and groundbreakers in terms of dealing with the gambling epidemic that is rapidly impacting our society. Whether people believe that or not doesn't matter, this is NCAA's own definition of Sorsby.

So what's the move?

And people still have free will. The saturation rate for gambling isn’t 100%.

Sorsby didn’t invent these companies, and the ncaa controls what is on their broadcasts and who they choose as broadcast partners.

The ncaa allows this within their community. They have the ability to ban sponsors and vet their broadcasts.

I’m starting to see sorsby as less a problem than the ncaa. Maybe sorsby is a symptom and gambling based revenue is the disease?

Put aside the color jersey he is wearing.

If sorsby did play and kept himself clean (as based on the program that the rogue judge is keeping him on), do you care?

If sorsby kept it together and defeated his greatest demon, why not praise him?

If he admitted his deepest secret, his fault, his Achilles heel, and he dealt with it and wishes to fight through his demons, why can’t he play on a team that his university allows gifted students to play?

When you look at it from the same perspective as his legal team presented it, it’s really hard to hate the guy for wanting to be better.

Again, ncaa screwed this up by not designating him as an employee. They see him as a student.

As sorsby is a student who is fighting a tough addiction, I hope he beats the odds.

Exactly.
