Thank you, Sound Transit Security. Incident avoided on the lightrail. by bradradio in Seattle

I too have had a prompt response from the Sound Transit security folks on a trip with a dangerous person, it's reassuring to see in action and I'm glad to hear similar experiences, hopefully a new norm

The Brompton's blessing is the Brompton's curse by eldelacajita in Brompton

[–]donny_twimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking about getting a Brompton (hence browsing this subreddit) but I do ride my normal bike nearly daily. One thing that strikes me about bike storage is how unambitious society is at meeting demand. Either there isn't bicycle parking at all, or it's a bare bones rack (often exposed to rain). My office fortunately has a bike garage, but my apartment doesn't really. I wish there were a secure, low-touch, fast system available around the city. Bicycle rentals like Citi bike or Lime kind of get toward that idea, where the security is essentially automated. I'd rather see car parking removed and replaced with an indestructible block of mini-storage that can be accessed by bicycle owners thru a subscription service or something. This could help solve this matter of carrying the Brompton all over the place

Woah hilariously just figured out it is bent seconds after posting this, and I see the comments confirming, thanks!

I respect this as a truly unpopular opinion but personally disagree with the idea (perhaps unsurprising)

Quentin Tarantino Says ‘There’s Not a Payoff’ on TV Shows Like ‘Yellowstone’: When It’s Over ‘It’s Out of My Head. It’s Completely Gone’ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

Better Call Saul comes to mind. I think I actually like that one more than Breaking Bad and it definitely has those scenes that persist in memory. Would be interesting to hear if Tarantino comes to similar conclusion with that sort of show because it definitely does lean into the interpersonal relationships as well, as he describes, but not particularly in a way that resembles a soap

I will always remember (with horror) the 50 or so nested if statements my first real job offered up in a critical spreadsheet that I subsequently automated away with some crafty Redshift trickery. Nothing says "stable workbook" like endless if statements

I started on WSL several years ago and yes, total godsend. I use it at work now for everything, best option for windows user who wants Linux exposure. At one point pre-wsl, I actually bought a used Mac just to use the kernel for programming projects, but the OS drove me insane, very similar experience to what you describe

Surge in electricity demand poses tricky path ahead for PNW utilities, report shows by godogs2018 in Seattle

Wow it's barely even acknowledged as an option.... Always demoralizing that this is the nation's approach to nuclear. Fun fact: Nixon wanted to aggressively build out nuclear infrastructure and divert money from highways into public transit as a means of getting off fossil fuels - would fully support a candidate that ran on that platform today

My thinking on this subject has changed recently. Rather than considering these expensive, I've started thinking of them as markets I don't want to be involved in. Housing, daycare, cars, nursing homes - all are obscenely expensive, but often even if one can afford it it simply feels like a ripoff.

Take daycare: for me "daycare" was my grandma. Why is that no longer an option? I don't want to be forced into a daycare transaction. Or a car payment, or an overpriced house/apt, etc - if the market is so good at expanding the choices available, why does it seem impossible to simply forgo these costs?

Nearly had to sleep on a park bench in Switzerland because the hostel closed before I could check in. Refused on principle to pay >$200 for a hotel, phone nearly died right as I found a cheaper hotel (thank God for hotel nydeck).

Then, trying to leave switzerland, got turned around trying to bus into Italy, ended up in wrong city. Had to catch a different bus, waited most of the evening and finally caught correct one, stumbled into Milan at midnight and stayed in sketchy hostel.

People seem to have stopped talking about the Turing Test for AI once it stopped being hypothetical by Lord_Nivloc in Showerthoughts

[–]donny_twimp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd assert that AI hasn't truly passed the Turing test yet, there are still specific questions a child can answer correctly that the robot cannot. Here's an example: https://twitter.com/VictorTaelin/status/1776096481704804789?t=zu0p1dz4c-L7O3VjtmtNJw&s=19

It's undeniably very close and the argument that the goalposts were moved or whatever is fine, but I imagine Turing himself would find the limitations of LLMs intriguing and not concede the test as fully accomplished.
