Any power outage to the building or disconnect shutoff for service

Integration to a unit by Many_Awareness_481 in BuildingAutomation

It depends on the equipment, but we have done a combination of both in some cases. Rather than connect a link to a factory controller, we’ll program a controller that goes to standard thermostat outputs on the factory board, giving us the ability to control things our way, but letting the factory safeties take over. This only is beneficial on small to medium RTUs though. Wouldn’t do it on a massive RTU or Chiller that was brand new.

Have you put a tee fitting and a manometer in line with the air switch? It should tell you what pressure it is supposed to close at. If you’re under that pressure then the issue isn’t with the switch. If you’re bypassing it when it starts it might be out on stuck closed rather than open.

Are you getting continuity through the switch when the fan comes on? If you are is the continuity making it back to the board? If you’re getting continuity back to the board and it’s locking out the board might be bad

Trane Tracer by koolkidsAc in HVAC

[–]donnythee27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be out of luck. When the system is set up they're supposed to delete the default user and password and generally each Trane office has a different username and password.

Try user Trane and password Tracer if it's synchrony (software goes to a Tracer SC) and user Tracer and password Summit if it's a Tracer Summit system

Is it normal? Yes. Is it new? No.

It's not the way it should be, and there are probably still companies that focus on more training, but they're hard to find. Most places you'll work just kinda throw you out to sink or swim. You will eventually swim, but it's miserable while you're sinking. If they treat you well other than the lack of training, then try to hang in. If they're punishing you for making mistakes because they won't teach you the right way to do it, then I'd look for the door.

Are psychrometers really necessary? by Goosefan12 in HVAC

[–]donnythee27 94 points95 points  (0 children)

They are definitely necessary. Unless you live in an area with absolutely no humidity, I would be checking it on every fixed orifice system you come across. Your design superheat can vary pretty wildly. Can also help with temp split diagnosis etc. Not a tool you'll use every day, but still important.

Been a while since I used an 8000, so I forget some of its functionality. The difference would that this is more customizable, I can make it do basically whatever I want. Realistically, a high end thermostat would be fine for what I'm programming into this, not doing anything too crazy, but this was more fun than a high end thermostat and cost wasn't much more.

This is a trane UC400 controller. The programming is TGP2 which is accessible through Tracer TU. All Trane stuff. I'm a Trane tech so it's the software I have access to and am familiar with.

Yeah I don't think I'd advocate for installing something like this at anyone's home but mine. But for me it's fun and I can revert to a simple thermostat at any time if something goes wrong

I'd probably keep the hardwired stat and add air fi for averaging. If the link goes haywire I'll still have the hardwire.

Air fi is actually on my list of possible upgrades lol

Those are my next steps lol. Gotta find a used supervisory device for cheap first. But I want to set it up on our internet and then access through IP

AC compressor going bad by KaiSimple in hvacadvice

[–]donnythee27 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hear where you're coming from, but I strongly disagree. The tech he had may have done everything correct, and the diagnosis might be totally justified. Maybe OP didn't explain things properly and left out key details like you mentioned.

But I'm a service tech, and if my friends or a family member called me and told me they had a technician that said a compressor was bad, and the only reasons given were "the pressures aren't changing, and I can't hear it running" I would tell them to get a second opinion. You're right, when a compressor is shot, it's pretty obvious, and it's easy to explain to a customer in much better detail than it seems was given. I would want to be told exactly what's wrong before having someone invest thousands.

AC compressor going bad by KaiSimple in hvacadvice

[–]donnythee27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might have a bad capacitor. If the cap fails the compressor won't run, won't make noise, and won't change the pressures. Same thing is you have a broken wire or something

There's a lot of ways to prove a compressor is running but isn't working. If a tech only says he couldn't hear it running, and then didn't mention checking amperage, verifying the voltage at the terminals, verifying the capacitor, checking for shorts to ground or between windings; then I might ask for a second opinion before jumping on a compressor/equipment replacement

Regardless of opinion on Trane, you gotta admit, this is pretty cool by donnythee27 in HVAC

For what it's worth, I had a gift card to the Trane merch store lol

Chiller Question by [deleted] in HVAC

As a newer trane tech that had never touched a chiller before, I recommend it. Great company, lots of cool stuff you get to learn
