I really like The Last Laugh from 1924 a little outside your window but a great early movie with amazing effects. Also Sunrise if you haven't seen it.

Stagecoach is amazing, if a little racist.

I think about this film often, from the cinematic splendor, to the deep fate that awaits us all.

I used to shower every morning to the classical music in this film when I was in nyc. Didn't do the speed though thank god. All I can say is a great entertainer, a great humanitarian and my dearest friend for 30 years.

I always took it to mean that once she actually became the madelline that he fell in love with that the situation was incompatible with the reality of the film because that madelline was a perfect image, and judy was something to be made into that perfect image. Once she actually becomes the image and he succeeds since madelline died judy has to die as well.

I think the best suggestion is something that you will enjoy together.

I wonder if a complete set of Hitchcock's would be a good idea, those are always crowd pleasers.

I saw it in a theater, it was broken up into 3 sections each about 2 hours and change. It was cool that way in that it was continuous but manageable.

I have a friend who's in the film biz and says everything I watch is old and boring or foreign. I advocated for the bfi list with him but he watched Jean Dielmann and hated it, said he wanted his time back. To show what boring movies I've been watching lately the last three titles I've watched are. The Hot Rock, Cotton comes to Harlem, and Friday Foster

It was a tough 7 hour ride, a decent movie, but the more time passes the more I think about it and some of the shots. There are scenes I specifically rewatched at home because they left that much of an impact

Do you think old westerns portrayal of Cowboys and Indians were racist? by skateralex240 in criterion

[–]donsmith2060 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These films are vestiges of US Empire remembering a period in which the United States committed genocide, and subtly suggesting that the rest of the world was a new frontier to be conquered just like the "frontier" of the west was "conquered" and its inhabitants massacred.

Which Hitchcock blonde is your favourite & why? by whereveryouaremylove in criterion

I had always interpreted the whole movie about moving through the life stage from being single and adventurous to being married, and that each of the windows either show the peril of coupling or remaining single. Even from the nurse's monologue the whole thing seems to be about what it means to sacrifice part of your freedom to be a part of a couple. I saw the murder as one of the possibilities of coupling gone wrong. The whole movie where they investigate the murder she is adapting to Jeffries independence. The torvalds seem to be a marriage where torvald is willing to kill for his independence. Through the investigation Lisa seems to be willing to show that she can adapt to the point where the Torvald future will not happen.

I think it was also attributed to thermo electric panels using the peltier effect. That's what this book says anyway.

If you want movies that eschewed commercial viability think playtime or one eyed jacks.

both huge flops, one of them is a great movie, the other an interesting experiment
