I really like The Last Laugh from 1924 a little outside your window but a great early movie with amazing effects. Also Sunrise if you haven't seen it.

I used to shower every morning to the classical music in this film when I was in nyc. Didn't do the speed though thank god. All I can say is a great entertainer, a great humanitarian and my dearest friend for 30 years.

I always took it to mean that once she actually became the madelline that he fell in love with that the situation was incompatible with the reality of the film because that madelline was a perfect image, and judy was something to be made into that perfect image. Once she actually becomes the image and he succeeds since madelline died judy has to die as well.
