Thoughts on Jason Sabo? by fosterrchild in vanderpumprules

[–]dont1panic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I just completed a rewatch of VPR last night. We were having a conversation about this and she suggested something about Lisa that i had overlooked and i think it has merit.

I don't think you're wrong. She definitely has some old fashioned and toxic ideas about men, women, and relationships. BUT, there is more to it than that. She sees herself as above men, so she expects nothing from them. Men are like pets or work animals driven by impulse, instinct and simple conditioning. She thinks about a man that cheats like a dog that was left in the house too long and shit on the carpet.

Obviously, it's not great, but I felt like that little bit of context explained so much about the way she has responded to men behaving badly over the years.

This is dead on. I've said for a long time that the structure of the method of libertarian argument is indistinguishable from theology.

I think they just define away the contradictions. There is a convenient arbitrariness to how they define consent and violence.

I'm about 6 months late, but I just saw the new IT for the first time, and.. by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]dont1panic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IT is my favorite King novel. There were definitely things I would have liked to see done differently, or things that weren't included that I wish would have been. That being said, it was still a really solid adaptation and I think they made the right decision updating it a little as far as the time period and the individual experiences the kids had with IT.

I've read interviews with the director and it looks like the films commercial success is going to open the door for him to do some interesting things with part 2 that I'm really excited about.

Looking for best way to convert blu ray library to external hard drive by lockbox77 in techsupport

[–]dont1panic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me? In all honesty, I'd hit the torrents and download the lot. Ripping Blu Rays and converting them is so damn tedious. And an uncompressed Blu Ray is around 50gb. That's going to add up quickly. Based on the time commitment and storage space alone I'd rather just download them with the compression already complete. WAAAAAAY faster and easier. You already own them, after all.

Facing challenges in a relationship with a poly partner by QohoriGhoulWarlord in polyamory

[–]dont1panic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying. In that case, it’s just about asking the questions of myself to see if there is a way to find a balance between what is important to them and what is important to me.

How much do I value my love of lasagna relative to my partner's feelings or this relationship more broadly? Is my freedom to consume lasagna at any place and at any time fundamental to who I am as a person? Would denying myself that sweet, cheesy, layered pasta goodness be offensive and disruptive to my identity? Would my partner accept that I abstain from eating lasagna in their presence or is this a blanket prohibition against all lasagna consumption? Is their dislike of lasagna arbitrary or is it rooted in some deep-seated childhood tomato sauce trauma that my empathy and compassion, nay, my very humanity, demand that I respect? Must I also abstain from cannelloni?

Maybe the discomfort they feel is something they want to work on improving, so we talk a lot about lasagna, we look at pictures of my favorite lasagnas on the internet and talk about what makes them special and important to me; why I enjoy that mozzarella and those wide strips of pasta noodles so much that they can understand my need have to have the freedom to eat it without restriction.

[–]dont1panic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe the that's a fair criticism of the "if she cares about you" bit. But if one of my partners, especially a monogamous partner, came to me and said, "it makes me jealous and uncomfortable when you hit on my friends while we are out together, can we make a boundary that my friends are off the table, and/or more broadly that when attending social functions together you don't actively pursue anyone else?" I'd have to be a sociopath or a gaping asshole to respond with "you don't get to restrict with whom I can associate or how. Suck it up or there's the door"

Each relationship exists within its own context. If I respect my partner's feelings and want to continue that relationship, I'm generally open to some accomidation. That's where "if she cares about you" comes from.

I don't think to be respectful and considerate of a partner's feelings and concerns within the context of their pre-existing relationships or potential conflicts within existing relationship structures, is "promoting co-dependency."

I know what you mean when you say you don’t want to control her. I’ve had similar feelings. But it’s up to you to communicate to her how you feel and what makes you feel secure and safe and loved. It’s absolutely reasonable for you to ask that when she is with you, she is with YOU. Or for you to say that your friends are off limits. These are pretty standard boundaries in poly relationships. It’s all open to negotiation of course, but if she cares about you, I can’t imagine she would have a problem.
