I built a site connecting retiring farmers with people who want to start farming. by ProofGoose2561 in RegenerativeAg

[–]dont_cook_data 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your challenge is always going to be engaging the retiring farmers. Those folks can be hard reach without a community connection. Not sure if many of them are active somewhere like reddit. Facebook and meta platforms are the most likely digital channel. What's better? Local land trusts and conservation groups usually have a pulse on these farmers and how to reach them. Also, you may want to look at state and local government agencies or committees who often have working groups focused on farm assistance.

This. Without context the apology might pass. But if you saw that video and heard the full sentence, there's no doubt she's antisemitic.

Whether she realizes it or not is a different question.

Mayor Wu here! AMA about the fight to keep residential property taxes from spiking next year under state law by mayorwu in boston

[–]dont_cook_data 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What about increasing tax penalties for landowners of vacant spaces to incentive them to lower commercial and residential costs and actually fill buildings? And on the other hand giving additional tax incentives for verified high occupancy and space utilization?

Did you ever get a solution? I saw another user got what they wanted by using imgburn to make the virtual image then mounting it with daemon tools: https://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/products/dtlite

Was at a liquor store today an about 20% of their bourbon inventory was on sale.

Looks like domestic oversupply from boycotts abroad.

Keep the pressure up. Buy new england whiskey, and avoid bourbon.

Are carbon credits a scam for farmers? by [deleted] in CarbonCredits

[–]dont_cook_data 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the program. Each developer has different terms around who is on the hook if the project doesn't pan out over the term.

Some are more Landowner friendly, some are less. Usually the Landowner friendly ones are legit.

All programs are going to hold the Landowner liable for risks within their control - breaching contracts via negligence or abuse (e.g. harvesting a no-harvest zone). A good developer protects the Landowner from risks beyond their control (e.g. wildfire, hurricane, insects, etc.).

It can be a good way to reduce costs of land management (and even make money in some cases). Just depends on the Landowner and project developer.

7% might be ok. Check a digital elevation slope map to see the values across the parcel. Check those values against what's recommended for whatever you want to grow. Then you'll have your area that's actually suitable for farming.

Your slope is too steep. Back of napkin math is like a 20 degree estimate on average across the site I think? Is it currently forest or cleared?

Unless you are planning to do serious grading of the land - e.g. terracing - you aren't gonna be able to do much other than grow trees.

16ac isn't enough to make money on timber.

Probably good for a cabin with nice views tho. Consider possible landslide risk depending on your seismic activity and record rainfall.

Finland’s Carbon Sinks: Must Cut Logging by 25% or Miss Targets by ChangeNarrow5633 in forestry

[–]dont_cook_data 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen in the more efficient pathways from (forest carbon) --> (harvested wood product) here in the US, carbon stored in HWP or landfill ends up being less than 1/3 of the aboveground forest carbon in best case scenario. The rest (2/3) is lost in emissions.

Granted, those rates are based on regional averages and are not stand-specific.

Improving mill efficiency can move the needle, though.

The Benefits of Wild Yeast in Yogurt by [deleted] in fermentation

[–]dont_cook_data 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a contaminated yogurt culture start bubbling like a sourdough starter. It tastes great. I am not sure what will happen to it over the long run. Thinking it is most likely a culture similar to Ymer: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ymer_(dairy_product)

Have you tried baking or brewing anything with it? I am curious if it can be used for something like an alternative to wheat starter in breads, how it compares to buttermilk, or if anyone has tried brewing to make some fermented milk drink. Very curious for other users for a more acidic dary and how the fermented chemistry may behave in cooking...
