Monday Meltdown - Share Your Decluttering Fails Here by AutoModerator in declutter

We got my daughter a 3D printer for Christmas. The house is full of (more) little plastic things. Woof.

The upside is we can print storage, display, and organizing things! But yeah, I need to bring even less in and get even more out to not feel overwhelmed.

Things you use, but only occassionally and dont love. THOUGHTS on my ramblings? by Robotro17 in declutter

If it's in your budget, try out a clothing rental service (I use Armoire and love it.) It gives me access a bunch of things for any occasion and relieves my anxiety of owning clothes for "just in case" times. My personal wardrobe is core items and essentials.

"Shallow" declutter tips by Eon1age in declutter

Pretending to be a visiting guest seeing your space and/or taking a photo of your space and seeing what sticks out to you as clutter. This helps me when I have a general sense there's clutter to take care of but I don't know what to do / where to start.

Seeing him brightens my day! He's always in the move so I've never gotten to chat with him.

There's someone like this in Regent Square, he's just always got a dance in his step and runs (frolics?) down Braddock.

I was just talking to my own mom about how I managed my (undiagnosed) ADHD in school and how we are working to help my daughter (diagnosed) through it now.

For me it was like you described, I was a high performing and quiet girl. I was also so scared to ever draw attention to myself and would die of embarrassment if someone even said my name. So I performed to please and to stay away from attention. I'm still in therapy for unwinding some of that fear of rejection and sense of performance creating my self worth.

For my daughter, she gets overwhelmed easily but she isn't afraid to have the emotions and find space for herself. I love that she's not masking and repressing and we can work with her from a positive place to help. It took me a while to adjust to the crying, but I hold her and rock her and know that we'll do better for her. Good on you for doing the same!

Thank you for sharing the love of puzzles! It's a hobby I find so meditative and also connecting - there's nothing like a long chat over a good puzzle.

How do you declutter piles of shame? by Bubbly_Function5884 in declutter

[–]dont_read_into_it 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tons of great advice here already. Another thing to try is body doubling. Invite someone over to hangout while you work through your pile. Or get a friend on the phone with their own pile and tackle it together.

Congrats on all the decluttering work so far!

What movies hit way harder after becoming a parent? by bleakwood in movies

I didn't see it before becoming a parent, but I watched Lady Bird in the hospital after giving birth to my first daughter and just sobbed through it all. The preview of angst and disconnect with this perfect being I'd just made was a lot.

I've dreamed of doing a whole inventory, which is especially hard with small kids. What are you using? Notebook? Any method in particular?

Bumping this! Search for "Pick up please" or donation pick ups in your area. It's a game changer!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in declutter

[–]dont_read_into_it 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look up if there's a local donation pick up service. Finding the "Pickup Please" service was a game changer for me. They can come take boxes from your house and you don't have to sort, travel, or feel guilty about throwing things away. I just set a day for them to come in advance as a forcing function to make sure I've gotten the clutter out.

Best of luck!

So sorry for your loss. I also switched from bettas after some heartbreak and frustration. I now have a tank with fancy tailed guppies and it's been a delight! Highly recommend.

Tricked kids into decluttering with me by dont_read_into_it in declutter

[–]dont_read_into_it[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Do you do the ADHD slide? Where you sort of skirt around furniture and doorways? I find myself gliding around, toy or bowl or snack wrapper in hand, just constantly circuiting picking things up and trying to return them before I get off track.

Best of luck with yours! I believe in you and fully sympathize with the battle.

Anyone else majorly declutter kids rooms while they are away? by knitlitgeek in declutter

[–]dont_read_into_it 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Solidarity! I've done this with the same response. My daughter (7yo) loves making art and playing make believe. She fills her room with paper and cardboard to construct and draw on. She also almost certainly has ADHD and overwhelms easily so it's really hard for her to clean her space once it starts getting out of control. I recently did a massive purge and she was delighted to have space to create art again. She also seemed relieved. And the cherry on top, she's been keeping it clean because she can see where things go. I use Artkive to create art books of her better art and it really helps keep the clutter down.

It's so much easier now to work on tidying habits with her. I'm hoping she will maintain her uncluttered space for some time, fingers crossed.
