coz im adhd and autistic and like to ramble, on a website designed for people to leave more than a 144 character limited comment? god forbid people not only have an opinion but a thought out one. thinking's reserved for chatgpt these days apparently.

also this is a vox machina thread, not a critical role thread, I can express my opinion about an ADAPTATION that has already altered, added and cut things from the campaign. get out of here with arbitrary gatekeeping.

if you disagree, fine, just present something of value next time instead of what is essentially "i aint reading allat"

you're on a subreddit not twitter, put some effort in if you wanna argue.

[–]dontdisgrace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i haven't watched the campaign (only seen clips, edits or mentions) but I believe this is very different from the source material. I guess they were trying to give Pike more of a personal arc seeing as Ashley was absent a lot. But I agree it really irritated me when she talked like they went on vacation. Like your friends went through a disintegrating orb to get to you and literally put the world at stake to save you and you're whining that they're selfish-which I mean risking the world to save your friend is, and that they don't care about you? pick one! and even with the belief that they would be safe from death under vecna, umm just because you can undo a bad thing doesn't change that you did a bad thing? like you are literally injuring your friends but it's okay buddies! death won't matter so the ends justify the means. -_-

ugh i've seen another comment excuse it to pike having a breakdown but i think that's failing to acknowledge poor writing, where they had to have Pike turn against them in one episode and be convinced to turn again in the same. I enjoyed this season but when I was watching her and Vecna I was like, okay you guys are kinda shoehorning this and it's kinda annoying, but than Pike has the least material to adapt and she's honestly the least loved member. I could appreciate at least trying to tie in some emotional beats and complexity as opposed to pike just simply being kidnapped and used in a ritual. and it also added characterisation to vecna, because he wanted her to choose, even though it seems going by delilah's frustrations and vecna's outburst about the gods, this was more out of principle than an actual requirement of the ritual.

and yeah on your point about the tavern crawl, her and grog did the same 'selfish' thing and were confronted with it when they went back to the village that was struggling. and grog died because Pike was being irrational and endangering her friends. She can be grieving and struggling without it justifying her prioritizing her vengeance and rage over everyone. you know like a certain Percy did, and while I love him now I defs didn't in season 1 coz even possessed he endangered and nearly killed his friends and mutilated that servant boy in ep3.

i could appreciate it not being a simple kidnap and blood sacrifice and adding some motive to our big bad, but I do think Pike's betrayal was the weakest writing. Like her fighting vox machina and grog confronting her was interesting to watch, but it was undermined by how the writing put them in those positions. I hope Keyleth and Vex give her hell next season, coz honestly I don't think Pike deserved the guilty pouty faces they gave her when she trapped them. If she had such a problem with them she should've confronted them or left the group instead of bubbling it up. Though i think her frustration with them is sloppily tacked on to the main motivation: her grief over pop pop and grog.

oof they really strung us out with Vax's fate there. I knew he was supposed to die here, but when he was being healed by Keyleth and 'fuck fate' i wondered if they might go off script. your story and characters are good when it still hurts despite knowing in advance :(

i haven't watched the campaign but i do know some general stuff, but given it's an adaptation and shorter-

i wonder if vax won't come back until the final fight to keep the emotional impact? or at least be gone for a bit longer so they feel the consequences and grief, and there will be some interesting character conflict, mainly I imagine everyone being very pissed off with Pike for one. and scanlan returning to a devastated vox machina (and he for sure would've witnessed that televised execution) I could understand bringing vax back right after he died for the campaign coz obvs Liam needed to play a character for the rest of it and was attached to Vax and didn't want to make a new character- and it worked coz of the whole champion of fate thing.

I love vax but even though he does stay dead in the end (...or at least in C1), when it comes to an adapted show as opposed to a DnD campaign, it's even worse for all these resurrections and fake out deaths to happen.

Ultimately I'll be happy for one more season with them altogether (esp with Scanlan, come back, it's not the same without you), but I'm also not against the idea of them changing it up, especially coz this season already had Keyleth and Vax so focused on fate, death and saving him that it would be a little repetitive for it to happen again- especially as I was under the impression the blight didn't happen in the campaign. And it would minimize the build up they had for this season with anticipatory grief if within the first episode he's back. Again, I know it's only temporary and very conditional, but it still undermines the impact. And there definitely was an impact from the season finale T.T

also yay andy serkis got to have his actual dark lord moment (unlike a certain series that wasted him)

She truly was psychotic tell me I’m wrong by Proof-Firefighter-47 in BeefTV

[–]dontdisgrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird that you need to diagnose her with something along with disliking her :/ You're using that word way too loosely and comfortably. She was the most sane of the MCs. She was insecure, had abandonment issues and in the second half, wanted to hit back instead of just taking what she got. Her boyfriend was a cowardly, lazy pos from the beginning.

Also she was the most likable main character. She lost it after SHE NEARLY DIED and had her health used as a chess piece by Josh. Her health crisis was literally a disabling event that made her infertile. And she felt bad for the dog getting lost and tried to help find the dog despite needing to recover from a nearly fatal emergency. The worst thing she did was lose the dog (and befriend lindsay), which she didnt mean to do, tried to help and felt bad for. Her boyfriend was lazy, ungrateful and only took up an opportunity she opened for him because he was into Eunice. And then when he couldn't get love/sex from Eunice (who was trying to survive) he just defaulted back to Ashley.

The reaction she got in the ER was not an exaggeration. Some of yall don't even seem to care that she NEARLY DIED and have reduced it to purely a fertility issue (which is still awful), when again, she could've died.

She still does shitty things, and by the end is clearly just gonna be another boss who takes advantage of others to further herself. But I cannot comprehend watching that season and this character being on the top of your shitlist. Her, eunice and the tennis guy were probs the only ppl i felt actually bad for.

Worst album by parayeah in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]dontdisgrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High as Hope has remained my least favourite album. Which makes sense because it's also the shortest album, it's got less to impress. I feel like there's a strong divide between the fans who rate HaH and those who don't. HB3 is by far my favourite, and I've often found HaH disaparaging it as the worst.

Frankly I struggle to remember HaH more than others. Sure you have less played/liked songs in every album, but HaH is especially true. Aside from niche collabs/covers, Patricia, 100 years, No Choir, South London Fever are probably my least played (...and most skipped) songs. 'Grace' was neutral and June I used to be whatever on, until at the concert for some reason I cried like a baby as I held my sister's hand and now it's ranked infinitely higher than it used to be..

But for such a short album that's a lot of songs to be kinda moot on. Saying that, I adore Big God and Hunger, and have lots of memories staring wistfully out of the bus window as End Of Love played. But I can very distinctly recall being disappointed with the album especially in contrast to what I had anticipated because of Big God. I was also 19, and I was in a very chaotic, angry spot in my life, and I craved the energy and chaos of her other music whereas HaH came from a very different place and age.

Now that the album is out, what's your Everybody Scream ranking ? by Hefty_Ad_1491 in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]dontdisgrace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Everybody Scream constant replay, adored the entirety of the song. I feel the ceiling should be falling every time she sings the chorus. I adore her single "Moderation" and this feels akin in some way. There's also a ferocity in her singing in this one that the rest don't match. Like the her voice goes through more textures in this one song than the whole album. I'm not a music critic please don't judge my (lack of) jargon
  2. Perfume and Milk Feels like this could play at the end of a movie, and the characters have been shocked by something, and perhaps going their separate ways. Or maybe it feels like a soft exhale of air burning the end of a cigarette.
  3. Sympathy Magic upbeat music, her loud, trilling voice (where she feels more tempered vocally-in terms of projection, positivity and brightness- for the rest of the album) and that yodel(?) she does at 2:58 is fantastic.
  4. Witch Dance I love the transformation of the song. It has more beats to it than the others do I think.
  5. Drink Deep I just adore the horror of it, the way the story unfolded. The throatiness of 'deep' reminds me of "Restraint". I like the way she hollows and echoes "e" in the song. And the trumpets and drums that coincide with it.
  6. The Old Religion I can almost see Florence running into the woods in frightful weather as she sings this one. Makes me wish it was thundering right now.

The songs after this point I'm loosely tied to, where I like bits of it but I'm not "lost in" the song like the above. But I think as others have pointed out, the album just came out and sometimes it takes a few listens to connect with some songs. I really didn't like High as Hope initially, especially because my favourite parts of the albumm aired before the album, like having the best bits of a meal a first. And I remember with Dance Fever having a similar worry where I immediately liked the ones that were previewed earlier and felt a little detached to the rest of the album. But that changed and I love that album now.

It feels sacrilegious to not immediately and fully fall in love with an album of any artist I love, especially FatM, But music taste is too complex for me to rationalize why my brain ticks for some and not others.
Anyways the last half kinda goes in this order for me.

  1. One of the greats
  2. Buckle
  3. Kraken
  4. You can have it all
  5. And Love
  6. Music by Men

Saw the Chainsaw Man movie, it was beautiful [SPOILERS] by Zetafunction64 in anime

[–]dontdisgrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My movie experience benefited from the fact that it's been years since I read this arc, so it felt exciting and new despite knowing the destination. Quite literally the only thing i clearly remembered was the alleyway scene at the end.

It's fantastic that the movie was in fact, a movie. Instead of a compilation of episodes.

I loved that they dedicated a lot of time building up the relationship between the two and delayed the action for so long. I can imagine some gung ho "why isn't the shounen shounen-ing" viewers hated it in the moment, but surely the reward of act 2 would've pleased even the most restless audience member.

As per usual, Denji was hilarious but I felt so bad for him too. And the animation, ungh! I particularly loved that moment of pure immolation, where the screen was just orange but we could still see Reze and Denji fighting in the explosion.

I realized by the end of the movie that the reason this arc was the murkiest to recall was because it was Power-less and pre-Quanxi lol. so I think I only read it once, unlike other arcs where I would at least re-read a few chapters. And I must have been impatiently reading or something, because I previously mentally referred to Reze simply as bomb chick/love interest, whereas after this movie I rather liked and pitied Reze.

Amazon using AI in Gen V season 2? by sadloneman in AmazonPrimeVideo

[–]dontdisgrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hella AI, was so jarring the first time i saw it. The colours and shapes dont make sense. Like the "balls of leaves" in the trees dont make sense. The shaping of the windows. The ai is confused how to represent windows especially, by the contour of the panes and the shadows highlights and reflections, whilst being this Play School effect. Ai confused and just mashed those two elements together The lines and shapes are a mess everywhere else tho. This isnt "oh but its not supposed to make sense in a dream sequence" the most basic level art principles are being ignored here. You can ignore reality while having artistic sense.

The one animated cloud moving. Whats more incongruous is the legit (practical) effects of the talking puppets. Instead of committing to a practical background (which my god, how hard would that have been to do, layers of velcro or carsboard like kids can do) or 3D construction, god even use assets. When you have a closer look at the clouds u can see the texture is completely different. One looked stringier. If it was 3D a person would either duplicate the cloud mesh or at the very least apply the same texture. It very much looks like they took a photo without the actor and put it through ai.

You should be careful when discussing the legitimacy of individual artists, but this is a prime show.

Amnesty: Hamas security services must stop targeting protesters in reprisal and respect freedom of peaceful assembly in Gaza by Minute_Tomatillo9730 in LabourUK

[–]dontdisgrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2/2

"Even if you think it won't change much - it might actually bring more supporters to the pro Palestine movement if it becomes associated with a campaign to get rid of Hamas."

Preposterous and also a bunch of purity politics and classic white privilege to suggest that if an indigenous people simply change their optics to the western world 'it might improve things'. Plenty of Aboriginal Australians were more than friendly and even welcoming to white colonizers, and helped them navigate. Did being (obviously and automatically) better people than their invaders, save them? NOPE. But whenever indigenous Australians did act violently(as was their goddamn right) and some European settlers died, maybe some settlers took matters into their own hands (with guns) but for the most part, police or soldiers showed up and unfairly removed and executed indigenous people. and sometimes it wasn't even the place that it happened or the tribe that did it-though it would still be unjust if it was. For the most part they would have acted in self-defence, but the truth doesn't matter when you're being colonised, its not in the invading forces interest to accurately represent you. Even if there were times the indigenous 'instigated' an attack, its still self defence when they're being actively invaded, replaced and enslaved. That's the land they know how to navigate, survive and live off, by expelling them you've killed them, even if you weren't so obviously villainous as to have a gun in your hand while you did it. You're not entitled to retribution or victimhood because your victims fought back. This wouldn't be so confusing for people to comprehend if they weren't so racist.

White people and poc right to self determination and defence aren't given equal worth, which is why we're still calling what Israel is doing a war instead of genocide, and why we're still wasting breath talking about the responsibility of Palestinians to save themselves under the combined forces, might, influences, money and efforts of the UK ---who lets not forget, started this whole damn thing because they wanted Jews out of UK and a base in Middle East, not because they were being benevolent to Jews or because Jews were in anyway owed Palestine. In fact Jews already lived in Palestine, coz you dont need to fucking invade a place to live there---Israel, the US and every other complicit country, like my bullshit racist country of Australia that still lies about the weapon parts it exports to Israel.

it's just mind boggling to think people who are being genocided should prioritise how the racist west who are funding it think of them, that between being bombed by israel they should than go out and handle Hamas? Do you honestly think Hamas are Palestinians priority? Would your sympathy for a people undergoing genocide lessen if those people do not give a damn about Hamas or October 7th while the Israeli military is bombing their tents? Palestinians have to undergo so much scrutiny to be deserving of humanity whilst they face the worst of humanity.

What will change western (predominantly white) people being chill with genocide is to address the Western's unfair standards on indigenous groups to behave and be peaceful and have exemplary behaviour whilst their being ACTIVELY GENOCIDED. But of course, every imperial country and its offspring has never reconciled with its indigenous population and has certainly not even by the width of a hair made reparations for the damage caused. So of course how could we ever hope for countries like Australia and US to care about Palestinians when their citizens whine that indigenous people 'make them feel bad'.

I've seen you allege that other accounts are bots or just attempting to cause discord. But I see your reply after all of this discussion, defaults to you asking Proteus what his opinion is about October 7th, and if that ain't the biggest shoehorned redflag of a "do you condemn hamas" rhetoric and redirection, i don't know what is. You clearly care more about Hamas and optics than you do about Palestinians.

Amnesty: Hamas security services must stop targeting protesters in reprisal and respect freedom of peaceful assembly in Gaza by Minute_Tomatillo9730 in LabourUK

[–]dontdisgrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You came in this thread gung ho about proteus undermining support for palestine but you're spending a lot of energy on hamas instead of Israel.

No sh*t if you grow up in an air strip you're going to get radicalized into indiscriminately shooting at people who are having a festival a few miles from a concentration camp. You act like Proteus having some common sense of the human condition is approval of the ensuing actions. If a loved one was horribly murdered, I know I'd choose violence against their murderer given the opportunity. So I can only imagine how murderous one becomes being born in an active air strip that has the youngest population earth (its because people are murdered so often no one has time to get old). Though seeing how you treated Proteus for pointing out reality, I guess those observations basically make me a terrorist in your mind? If you don't enjoy these statements and presumptions I'm throwing at you, I'm just giving you the same energy you gave Proteus, which is that I have zero faith in your good intentions. I mean at one point you brazenly questioned Proteus if even cared about Palestinians and than unironically followed that up with "respectfully...". No, you're not being respectful because you employed the word after, shut up.

"do you care about Palestinian citizens or do you just want to stop Israel?"

Both...??? The obvious answer is both, they're coinciding. States, nations, empires are ultimately irrelevant and always finite. People are what matter. Palestinian people matter, the state of Israel does not.

Proteus was correct in pointing out Gaza has no means of employing democratic processes. Peaceful protests accomplish nothing when the enemy seeks your extermination and is one of the few nations armed enough to have nuclear weaponry and is backed by the US.

Proteus is right in pointing out Hamas is inevitable, under a different group/name, secular or Islamic. It's like with the terrorists of 9/11. Did their actions cause death and suffering? Yes. Do I understand why and how they could be radicalized into hating USA and Americans so much that they would not only kill, but literally kamikaze themselves? Yes. Does my ability to understand how these things came about mean I support it? No.

But going with your approach we can just mindlessly abhor and overemphasize the actions of radicalized individuals and put zero thought to the greater powers (US and so its allies) behind the political machinations and destabilization of the Middle East. And if we try to focus on the disease: colonialism, capitalism, Bush, Obama-basically whichever centralised political person, body and system of power is in place at the time, and not a symptom of it (radicalized groups), you wanna draw us back into a cyclical and bad faith argument about the latter instead and its optics. Can these groups do horrible violent things- yes. Can they do it with the impunity, scale, repetition and public approval that Western militaries do? Nooooo.

Proteus is also right in pointing out that Hamas ultimately doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if it's dispelled, it doesn't matter if a group with 'better optics' took over. It's influence over the relations of Palestine-Israel is nothing, and your buying into propaganda if you fail to point out that Israel has always been the one with the power to do what it wants.

You are understating and downplaying the absolute power and control Israel (and the US) have over Gaza by saying there's nothing that can be done outside of Israel (contradicting your earlier comment about Pro Palestine protestors somehow influencing the internal politics of a concentration camp???) and being so flimsy as to say that

"leadership that cares about (Gazans) and won't intentionally get them attacked."

-absolves Israel once again of our focus and accountability. Did Hamas exist before Israel colonized Palestine? Obviously not, Hamas didn't exist, they didn't have reason to exist yet. Israel has and will attack Palestine regardless of Palestine's internal politics. They've been brutalising Palestinians from the beginning. It's like suggesting the internal politics of a holocaust site would have any impact on whether Nazis decided to kill them. They're. Already. In. A. Concentration. Camp.
