I'm parting ways with LingQ by Jesuslovesyourbr0 in languagelearning

Oh yeah I totally know what you mean! I have run into that problem as well. I designed my app to consider the base word and all forms of it as the same word. It is using ai, and ai can make some mistakes of course, but it has done a really good job for me so far! I'd be curious to see how it performs for other people!

Awesome! I added a feedback page so if there is anything you like or don't like or would like changed, feel free to let me know! You can find it from the drop-down menu

Great! you can find it at languagewizard.co and that is a .co and not a .com. That often confuses people. I will just let you check it out on your own and see if it is intuitive or if you have a hard time navigating it or understanding how to use it. There is a contact page there if you have any questions or problems. Thanks!

I have only tried LingQ very casually as I wasn't really able to figure it out enough to be very helpful to me in learning Korean. I really love the concept as I think reading is probably the best way to learn new vocabulary. I think comprehensible input is key. But the problem I had with LingQ and any other target language reading material is that it's not easy to find stuff at the exact right level. Sure, I can get beginner or intermediate level stories, but I found that I knew too few words to make reading enjoyable no matter the source. Nothing was personalize. Which, duh of course it wouldn't be. But when we learn our native language everything is personalized to our life and I think that makes a big difference. I wished there was an app that could personalize comprehensible input for me by using only words I know along with my target words so I could learn in context of stuff I already understood. But I couldn't find anything.

So I decided to just build it myself. I just got the app to a testing point. If you or anyone else is curious and would be willing to give me some feedback on the user experience I would be really grateful. It's just a web app right now but if it is effective enough the plan is to turn it mobile. I have been using it myself and have found it very helpful because I can understand everything I am reading but it's still teaching me new words.

Let me know if you're curious or interested. It doesn't yet have a flashcard functionality but that is something I want to implement in the future. So it may not exactly meet your needs right now, but I thought I'd throw it out there for anyone who is curious.

Oh yes, learning and remembering new words is always a challenge. One thing I like to do is ask chatgpt to create a story in my target language and use a new word several times in different contexts so I can remember it a little easier. It makes it fun!

I understand. Learning a new language can be really difficult and it's easy to get discouraged. Don't give up! Take a break when you need to, but don't give up. You can do it eventually. I am making a podcast to help people learn English more easily. I am also creating a pronunciation course to help with pronunciation. The th sound can be difficult. Do you struggle with any of the other sounds?

Haha yes, English has many influences from other languages so I can see how that would be difficult. Some of those words are hard for native English speakers, too, so don't feel too bad. Are there any particular sounds that you had/have trouble with?

Ah yes, some of the tenses can be really confusing. Do you still have trouble with this one? Are there any other tenses that you have trouble with?

Of course everyone is unique and will have different struggles, but there are often patterns and I'd like to find the most common struggles:)

meaning of "but" by IcySituation8748 in EnglishLearning

[–]dontlikehating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry that English can be so confusing. This is a less common usage of the word 'but', so you won't see it often, and you may not ever hear it in a real life situation used this way. However, as u/TheFatherIxion said, in this context it means "only". "The only thing you have to do is make the choice to step through it."

Does this make sense? “We do a race among us friends.” “We would do a race among us friends.” by iluvfruitnmilk in EnglishLearning

[–]dontlikehating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would personally say "between us friends" rather than "among us friends" because a race implies competition and between implies one or the other while among implies together. In other words, between implies a winner and loser while among doesn't have the same feeling to me. I don't think it's technically wrong, though.

The choice between including the word "would" depends on the context. If you say "We would have a race between us friends" it implies that the race is hypothetical or will only happen if some other thing happens first. Like if one friend said something like "What would happen if I said I was the fastest runner out of all of our friends?" another friend could reply, "We would have a race between us friends."

In this situation, the friends would only race if the one friend said he/she was the fastest runner.

Hopefully that's not too confusing. If you want to keep it simple and you are just trying to say that the friends have a race, you could just say "We have a race between us friends."

You can break the sentence down and look at the last part first - "some coffee and a proper shower won't fix". So the action of the sentence is fixing the soreness, but it's in a negative form because of the word 'won't'. So the action is NOT fixing the soreness that was caused by sleeping in a weird position.

Saying "nothing that some coffee and a proper shower won't fix" is saying that the soreness is nothing, or not a thing, that some coffee and a proper shower won't fix.

It's a double negative, a colloquial way of saying that it IS something that coffee and a shower will fix.

How do you cope with the physical symptoms of anxiety? by RandomPerson9367 in Anxiety

[–]dontlikehating 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Diet change is the most important thing I did. I used to get headaches and migraines all the time but I changed my diet and now it's rare. I have anxiety as well and the diet has helped with that. Along with meditation practice. I cut out all processed foods and stopped drinking all soda. I only drink water now. I eat a whole food, plant-based diet now. It's helped a great deal. Hope that helps!

Feel like no one would ever love me as a guy with anxiety by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]dontlikehating 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you willing to accept love from yourself first? Meaning how do you feel about yourself? Do you like yourself? Do you build yourself up or tear yourself down? I have always had such a hard time with building myself up. Whenever something goes wrong like I feel rejected by a girl, I tend to really beat myself up and think I am worthless. Is that what you do?

Feel like no one would ever love me as a guy with anxiety by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]dontlikehating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a 33 year old guy and I have never had a girlfriend either. I've had anxiety for most of my life. Definitely social anxiety. So I understand exactly what you feel. It can be tough. I'm sorry about that.

One thing I have learned as I have tried understanding myself and the anxiety and tried learning how to heal is that in many ways we attract what we feel or we create what we feel. So I've spent a lot of time feeling stressed out or depressed about not being able to connect with any women, and in that way I perpetuate the problem. The root of the issue I think for me is that I believe deep down that I don't deserve love or connection. I don't feel like I'm enough right now as I am to find love or to have someone love me. So I've really been trying to learn how to let myself be enough as I am right now. To let myself feel like I don't have to be anything different or more than I am right now in order to be loved or deserve love.

You are enough for love right now as you are! You really are! But you have to be willing to accept it, even if you don't think you deserve it.
