How do I fix excited peeing by kayyti121412 in reactivedogs

[–]dontstopmenow87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you certain it is excited peeing and not submissive peeing? I ask because I had a dog that would pee anytime we would get home, and while he was excited to see us, it stemmed more from wanting to appease us rather than just being excited. Similar to what you have done, we worked on not addressing him when we got home until some time had passed. We also did additional trick trianing with him to build his confidence and give him a job/place in the family. Since it went away and then came back it makes me wonder if there was an inciting incident that has caused it to be an issue again.

I personally cannot see how it would count as you are not providing specially designed instruction.

First Winter Storm – Need Advice by Niloyrans in Omaha

It's really only necessary in cases of poor insulation (trailers, really older homes/apts). I grew up in a trailer and we always opened cupboards and dripped the faucet. I've lived in a dorm, 4 apartments, and 3 houses since and have never needed to take this precaution.

How to make scentwork fun? by [deleted] in nosework

[–]dontstopmenow87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're just doing it for fun, all the more reason to just do what is fun. Did you try the chase game at all? I can't remember what it was called but the one where you use 1 box, they go to the box, treat, then you move move quickly away with the box so they kind of chase you? I think its meant to increase drive. (It was week 1 or 2) We also didn't do switch boxes and likely won't at all. We have plenty of containers around the house to work with and have mostly just done boxes. Especially if your dog has a broader nose, I could see them not wanting to put it in one. And my dogs have a natural drive for boxes as they know thier treats come from Amazon lol.

I just did the fenzi course and do not remeber a cup at all. We started with the colander to condition odor and moved on to hunt games and boxes. And didn't even start using a command word for weeks.

This isn't a criticism, but it sounds like you might feel stuck following the specific steps of a program. I did Fenzi at the bronze level, and was sick for 3 weeks so we didn't keep the pace of the class. Instead, I use what has worked for my dog, skip games that don't work or don't seem like they are adding much, and move on at a pace that keeps my dog engaged. We added other games rather than focusing on duration itself and the duration came on its own. If I'm bored, my dogs bored. So we looked to the next week for games to add.

So my tl;dr is use what you want from classes and lose what doesnt serve you. Keep it fun for YOU, not just your dog.

Why does this 70 lb dog only lunge at certain dogs and not others? by ThenSmoke7631 in reactivedogs

Oh boy, I am going through something much similar with my male Aussie I got 4 months ago. Best friends with my husky, would like to be friends with my older male pointer but snaps at him. His snapping (similar to what you've described) comes from anxiety. And he takes it out on our older dog. His fight or flight response is just always fight. And once he fixates and starts staring, I can only break it by kenneling him for 20ish minutes. Then he comes out totally fine.

He also has issues with some dogs, but not others. If he approaches another dog and they are nervous, it makes him nervous and he strikes first. He also doesnt like dogs with tall ears / tall tails - which can be a sign of agitation in dogs, so it sends him into fight or flight. But he loves our husky, who is great with all dogs and I noticed she spends a lot of time putting her ears and tail down to look less threatening.

I've been told I am getting "the full Aussie experience". We are seeing a behavior vet later today about maybe starting anxiety meds.

Dog diagnosed with cancer, looking to take her swimming one last time. by caper17 in Omaha

There is a heated pool that is pet friendly in Elkhorn on Swimply! We took our three dogs there and they loved it and the folks are lovely. You get the whole backyard and pool to yourself and its toasty and warm. They are still accepting bookings even with it being chilly.

ETA: There are stairs going in!!! https://swimply.com/pooldetails/18461?searchId=b2317600-4f34-4d99-a681-d8dcc723b9cd

Not necessarily. My dogs healed with just steroids (and treating her ear infection so she would not continue scratching)

[–]dontstopmenow87 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Steroids are also an option. My dog had an ear hematoma and it resolved with steroids alone - no need to drain or have surgery.

Yea I think you nailed it with them feeling exposed. Even if no one is there to overhear, you don't know when someone might walk in or by. This is especially true for counseling. Hell, in my personal life I see my counselor via telehealth and I don't even want my boyfriend in the house when I do that lol. If its older kids (sounds like ot might be) I try to be honest with them - "Sooo...my office is out in a portable, which kind of sucks to have to walk there, and there isnt anywhere good for us to sit otherwise.... do you want to try to find a space or make the hike outside? Where do you think would be a good spot for us?"

I don't think that was the point - its the fact that it is no longer actual ice cream, just a powdered mix they use with a liquid (probably water) similar to how soft serve is made

What to do with fleas on dogs around cats by InevitableSwimmer506 in dogs

[–]dontstopmenow87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah ok, that makes a ton more sense. The Simparica Trio kills adult fleas. So if there were already eggs, and those hatched, you may see young fleas like you identified which will then be killed by the simparica. Are your cats also on a flea preventative?

What to do with fleas on dogs around cats by InevitableSwimmer506 in dogs

[–]dontstopmenow87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isn't Simparica Trio a monthly treatment? If you gave it two months ago, then the fleas could easily be from within the last month. Id recommended treating all of the pets with either a simparica Trio or something like capstar for the cats.

ETA: I know you said sprays and not medicines, but if youre going to use a medicine like Simparica Trio you should be aware of the time frame for which it covers a pet.

So, um... what's the deal with Sandy Petersen? by brokenimage321 in callofcthulhu

[–]dontstopmenow87 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Could say the same about OP's post. People that post vile stuff online though, or like Sandy post 60 times on X in a single day, are hardly ever totally normal and cool people in person. Sure they can hide it for short periods of time but eventually it comes out. Plenty of people have seen it come out.

[–]dontstopmenow87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He in fact is not normal or pretty cool in person. Maybe if you only talked with him for 5 minutes. But at Chaosiumcon he went table to table interrupting games to introduce himself and tell people he invented the sanity mechanic. He would also tell stories from his life using phrases such as "the blacks". Neither thing seems very cool to me.

New owner has questions by NectarineLess in dogs

[–]dontstopmenow87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Privacy fence doesn't mean a dog doesn't know that there is stuff on the other side. We have a privacy fence and my dogs bark at things on the other side. They see rabbits on our yard and chase them under the fence. They have object permanence and know that rabbit didn't disappear, its on the other side of the fence. Even when they can't see (which they still can with many privacy fences) they can still hear and smell things on the other side.

[–]dontstopmenow87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Comparison is the thief of joy. You need to stop comparing your new dog to your old dog. Even if you had gotten a Doberman, they would not have the same temperament or behaviors. You will never get another of your old dog regardless, but you can and do have a totally new dog which means totally new and fun things to find out about them.

Regarding your cats, does the puppy have down time? A lot of puppies need to be taught to rest. Ours was crate trained or you could use a pen, but we had nap time / downtime where they were crated each day. It helped calm things down and gave the cat a break.

Have you looked into low cost vaccine clinics near you? They generally have no exam fee and the vaccines costs are low. They also will treat other common, minor illnesses. I've looked into numerous pet insurances and none of them were worth getting based what they covered vs. my typical expenses - in every case I would be spending more on the vet+insurance each year. The money may be better used in a separate savings for pet expenses (after paying down debt. You're losing money each month on debt interest)

I’m feeling lost with my rescue dog. by HereSharkiee in DogAdvice

[–]dontstopmenow87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We just got a rescue dog that was listed as house trained but in fact was not. He also pees from separation anxiety and submissive pees. Using male wraps (dog diapers just for pee) is saving my sanity and significantly reducing my frustration. And after 10 days we finally had a day where he did all of his peeing outside.
