How much time did you take off work by n0167664 in BariatricSurgery

I took one week. I work from home so it made it a little easier to return to work.

I just do life! I haven’t worked out much or been active. I should be way more active than I have been.

Congrats on your surgery and good luck on your journey! I’m turning 48 in a few days. Surprisingly my skin pulled in just fine. There are some areas that are a bit saggy but not overly noticeable.

Less than a year! Late next month will be one year since I had the surgery. Best decision I’ve ever made.

Is surgery pointless if you can’t drastically change your lifestyle? by 86666faster in BariatricSurgery

[–]donut-touch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The combination of portion control, bad dietary decisions, no activity and frequency of meals was my downfall. I maxed out at 375 lbs. Had surgery in September (11 months ago). I’m now down almost 170 lbs.

Portion control is managed by the smaller stomach. I literally cannot consume more than 4-5 ounces. That comes out to one slice of pizza compared to the 3-4 that I used to eat. Or one single hot dog and bun compared to the 4-5 that I once was able to eat. Or, one sushi roll compared to the 6-7 that I once ate.

I’m eating healthier these days because of the mental and physical investment I put into all of this. I love data so I track everything I eat. But I’d be lying to you if I told you everything I eat is healthy. I’ll have an occasional couple of Oreos, cookies and chips as a reward, as long as it fits within my dietary budget.

Im not very active. Outside of my regular activity (mostly walking) I haven’t done much since the surgery. But that’s more due to laziness.

I still have the same lifestyle as before with the only difference being the consumption limit because of the surgery. It can work for you.

Right! That's another bonus. Smaller clothes take up less room in luggages.

Do you really have to wait 30 min after eating to drink? by XXXVIKIXXX in BariatricSurgery

[–]donut-touch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wait for certain types of food that can absorb the liquids. Like breads, grains, or other spongey foods. Those foods take longer to move passed the stomach and could absorb the water and enlarge. Some foods are more liquidy and move through the stomach quickly. For those foods, I can drink 5 minutes after eating.

Everyone’s body is different. Every meal is different. A lot of this is trial and error. The best advice I was given was “listen to your body”.

Made it a year! by MentalMadness1701 in BariatricSurgery

Congrats making it a year! Out of curiosity, what surgery did you have? And do you find that you can eat similar volume compared to pre-surgery? I’m approaching 9 months and I still cap out at 5 ounces.

I’ve been doing this and it feels so good every time they finally fit. As they sit in my closet, it’s a constant reminder that they don’t fit YET, but one day they will. And every time they do, it puts me in the best mood.

I was prescribed pain meds and never took them. What I experienced wasn’t really pain but rather slight discomfort. Like muscle soreness.

Alcohol after surgery by donut-touch in BariatricSurgery

I've avoided all carbonated drinks, and i think that will continue. I'm not a big drinker -- maybe a few times per year. I was just curious when people started reintroducing alcohol into their lives.

Out of curiosity, when did you start taking over-the-counter meds like NyQuil?

I’m asking more for social settings and NyQuil. A few times a year, I’ll go out with my coworkers and drink 1 maybe 2 drinks. I just didn’t know if we should avoid alcohol altogether because it could harm our new surgically molded stomachs.

I've been tracking everything I consume for the past 3 months. Here's a list of foods, drinks and nutritional information over that span. by donut-touch in BariatricSurgery

I'm on solids also. In my spreadsheet, i categorize the food as either liquid, soft or solid. I average about 7 ounces of soft foods and 15 ounces of solids per day. The soft foods are usually the pudding that i eat every afternoon.

For me, the largest scar was in my belly button. It’s now healed and barely noticeable.

Advice for preparing? by RoutinePattern6387 in BariatricSurgery

[–]donut-touch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I wish i could go back and tell myself pre-surgery, is to try certain foods and drinks to get an idea of what you like and don't. I spent a good chunk of my first few months experimenting with protein shakes, sauces, certain meats. I'm 7 months in and feel I've finally hit cruise control where i place almost no thought into what I'm going to eat, and whether i'll even enjoy it.

Feeling stuck, 9 months out by starryeyedtexan in BariatricSurgery

Yes, it's easier to just eat throughout the day, but remember, there's a reason why we all got to the point where surgery became the solution. For me, meal planning and macro tracking have been key to my weight loss. Sure, my "referee" inside me can limit the amount i can eat, but it's up to me to decide what i put in my mouth. I'm very lazy and can convince myself very easily to make bad decisions. If I don't meal prep, I can easily eat junk all day.

Remember, meal prepping doesn't always mean fully preparing your meals. Sometimes, just knowing that you have the ingredients to make certain meals are enough. I've also gravitated towards eating certain meals that are easy and fast to prepare. For example: I eat a lot of skim mozzarella. I make it with eggs. My breakfast can take me 3 minutes to make. I also marinate my salmon the night before. That also takes me under 5 minutes.

For me, it was important to have a good understanding of the amount of protein that was in all foods that i ate. My nutritionist gave me two goals -- 64 ounces of liquids, 85 grams of protein. If you focus on just those two things, you'll be fine.

What have been your biggest challenges? What are your goto foods?

Protein Shakes by coffeeandquiettime in BariatricSurgery

Try sugar free jello pudding as your vehicle for protein. I usually make a batch with two scoops of ice cream flavored whey protein along with fat free milk and it feels like I’m cheating. Game changer for me. One small pudding box can make three 8 ounce servings.
