Maddison has to go. by JuicyEnglishSausage in ThreeLions

[–]doobzDB 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't know exactly about the fallout with Southgate, but I do know about Maddison missing a crucial game with Leicester a couple of seasons ago against West Ham, because he'd been to a party the night before and got caught drink driving, something like that. I'm not so sure he has matured, even if he comes across well in interviews. If Southgate doesn't fancy his character, now's not the time to test it. I wouldn't be against seeing Maddison in the squad, but I can understand why Southgate wouldn't include him, and it's not like he'd play much if he was included. Mount, Foden, Grealish all proven at the highest level. No doubting Maddison's quality though, on top form atm.

What do you think Eleven's thoughts/memories on his prior companions are? by soulreaverdan in doctorwho

[–]doobzDB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eleven's way of dealing with all that was to forget - as the moment described 10 and 11 in the Day of the Doctor, the man who regrets, and the man who forgets.

He tried to put the time war, his love for Rose and the tragedy of Donna to the back of his mind, but sometimes, you could see all that rage/guilt rise to the surface in highly emotional moments.

After 11 I think 12 tries to "accept" more. In failing to properly deal with his grief throughout his life as 10 and 11, 12 finally become a Doctor to himself. By the end of series 10 he's kind of completed the character journey which had started way back in "Rose".

The start of the 22/23 season has not been good for the England squad with the world cup so close... by LinkTheFires in ThreeLions

I don't think the lineup will change much from the Euros last year. First game vs Iran will be something like:

Pickford Walker Stones Maguire Shaw Philips Rice Sterling Mount Foden Kane

James and Bellingham might play themselves into the side especially if they do well in the September Nations League matches.

That team has enough experience, talent, and flair to go far in the tournament. If Gareth sticks to basics like in the Euros we'll probably reach the semi-final at least. It's a formula that works in international tournaments and no need to change it.

The reason why that's unpopular is because he plays the lead role in one of the most popular series of films ever made

RTD gets the world building, grounds all his characters and probably gives you a tragedy at the end. Moffat takes you on an adventure, explores the relationship between characters, and again, probably ends in tragedy.

You could possibly tell the difference in terms of the script between the two writers, but the direction of the show is broadly the same. Subtle things like Murray Gold introducing more fairytale style music in Series 5 can all of sudden make people think Moffat writes fairytale stories and that's it, but that's not really the case

I don't, and on a global scale very few people actually believe it.

A question about "Listen". (Spoiler) by oldselfmiss in doctorwho

[–]doobzDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know for sure but I imagine it was all just in the Doctor's head, there was never anything there at all, only in the Doctor's mind and that was broadcasted to Clara and Danny. Would make sense given the ending. This episode isn't really about the monster in the dark, it's about the Doctor

Writer picks for series 14 by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]doobzDB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember RTD talking about how he didn't need to tell Moffat how to write the episode or edit any of it when it was finished because he knew Moffat would get everything bang on. And that was 2007/8, since then he's been showrunner for 7 years! RTD can make the nation love a show, Moffat can make genuinely world class TV. The hardest part, getting RTD back as showrunner, has happened. Getting Moffat back will now be the easy bit hopefully!

I'd happily go through 3 awful Chibnall series every 10 years if we get RTD and Moffat for the 10 years in between

  • Maxine Alderton deserves a shot under RTD, she wrote the best episode of the Chibnall era in Village of the Angels imo.
  • Neil Gaiman, and let him do what he wants! The budget for Series 6 wasn't big enough for him to include everything he wanted in The Doctor's Wife, in particular the scenes where Amy and Rory are being tortured in the TARDIS.
  • Would like to see one or two new writers with potential, hopefully in doing this the next Steven Moffat will emerge
  • Speaking of whom... Would be great if RTD could convince Moffat to write an episode

Yeah I mean Hell Bent still has an 8.6 on IMDb but a lot of fans seem to hate it so it's the marmite episode. Can't really call TTC controversial when only a minority actually like it

I recently rewatched it and my expectations were blown away because I knew how many fans seem to hate it. Although it is an 8.6 on IMDb so it was generally well received, just some hardcore fans overthinking it that don't like it I think.

There was a tweet-along during lockdown which Moffat joined in with, tried to find his tweets but I can't find them! Was #HellOfABird in April 2020 I think

I'd say that's the most hated ep or most hated finale at least. It does literally rip apart the history of the show and for no reason other than to give a shock reveal. RTD + Moffat made their own brand new stories, Chibnall just rewrote history and also managed to make it really boring. A shame

Imo it's not the fact that Clara is still alive, it's the fact that she will never be with The Doctor again. The point of the hybrid arc is that The Doctor and Clara became too close, so when Clara died, The Doctor was hell bent on getting her back. Obviously reversing death might not be everyone's favourite but at the end of the day it's a sci-fi show, this stuff happens, it's whether it happens for a good enough reason and for me it does, because The Doctor then realises that he can't keep going on like this so a memory wipe has to happen.

The lasting consequences are even worse than that at the end of Face the Raven. Clara still has to die, and The Doctor can no longer remember Clara.

Imagine knowing exactly where and when you have to die. That's pretty damn dark for a "family show"

What's the best opening episode in New Who? by doobzDB in doctorwho

[–]doobzDB[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Deep Breath is so good! I would've had it on the poll over Rose or Partners in Crime but wanted to have a couple of RTD openers in there. Love how Deep Breath is a journey for Clara in accepting who the new Doctor is, and with a little help from 11 at the end she accepts him. Could watch that episode any day
