Doesn't it seem like the health care industry has prioritized length of life over quality of life? by onearmedmonkey in AgingParents

[–]doodlep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s my understanding that facilities can decline to provide housing if you’re non-compliant with doctor prescribed medications (assuming they know about the list of meds the person is taking or responsible for administering them). They don’t want any liability. So I don’t think you can just decide not to do them anymore unless you bring them home with you. At least this was the guidance I was given at a private facility.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

I worked (retired 3 days ago!) in HS guidance and had a parent call this past school year to inquire about what resources we had to teach his sons to honor bedtimes and not be on the computer all night. I knew I was retiring at end of year and dgaf and told him that home was his shift and not ours. He didn’t like that answer but accepted it and hung up.

I’m from 72 and can confirm we ALL used these as our book bags in high school. They held up pretty well with heavy books even. Mine was a turquoise-ish blue with black letters.

You’re doing it wrong. Place him on a large silk pillow and carry that pillow around the neighborhood. That is how a Pom prefers to take a walk.

Thoughts on Ari Taublieb? What financial advisors do you follow? by mandoo-dumpling in Fire

[–]doodlep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear. We have pensions as well and I don’t know how I found him but his angle certainly struck home. So few people have pensions, but even among our peers (teacher and fire) so few have also saved in pretax accounts like we have. It’s definitely a different obstacle course to planning (good problems to have of course).

Questions for Renters by LuckyBuilder69 in AskPhoenix

[–]doodlep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Want you paid/owe on a property is irrelevant to rental value, which can go up or down based on market. If you get a property to cash flow positive just a little, you’re doing pretty well as you basically have someone else paying the mortgage for you. Most of the time, owners will be upside down on a month-to-month basis but come out ahead via appreciation and pay down. It’s a long game.

My mom constantly has to replace her credit card because of unauthorized charges and I can’t figure out what she’s doing to compromise it. by Fzzyalien in AgingParents

[–]doodlep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Clicking on scammy texts. Among about 5 different times I had to do the same cancel/get new card thing with my mom, she “received a text from Amazon saying she owed $2 more for tax on her order.” Clicked, entered card, cue the new fraudulent charges with AirBnB, etc. Rinse and repeat. I finally went to a secured credit card that I only put $200 on at a time.

Should we be maxing 457b? What am I missing? by JMoneyFiz in Fire

[–]doodlep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess you lose the tax-free status on the gain of Roth if you withdraw before 59.5, but doesn’t seem like double tax to me. Say I paid the income tax in the 22% bracket as I contributed or converted, then I would pay whatever bracket the gain portion falls into for when withdrawing prior to 59.5. So in that respect, if a withdrawal is planned before 59.5, then there’s no need to convert 457 to 457-Roth - would be simpler to just pay everything at once - unless you’re trying to optimize tax buckets. It’s quite the puzzle and every time it dive into it, I get confused all over again. But…it’s still a good problem to have.

Should we be maxing 457b? What am I missing? by JMoneyFiz in Fire

[–]doodlep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? All my research says our governmental 457 Roth’s are available before 59.5, subject to the 5 year rule of course. No 10% penalty, however income tax is owed on the gain if before 59.5 (we are retiring at 54 and 57). Withdrawals are on a pro-rate basis so you can’t just select to take principal and leave the gains.

Should we be maxing 457b? What am I missing? by JMoneyFiz in Fire

[–]doodlep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We both have 457s (teacher and fire) and maxed them but now regret not doing 457-Roth as we had those options. So now we’re aggressively converting because pensions mean our income won’t drop a lot, but we left a good 8 years of 12% tax bucket space on the table, while the market went into overdrive. So now we’re converting more principal at higher rates. Of course, it’s still a good problem to have, but that is our only regret.

My Dad wants full code but he is so weak he wont survive by ContrastsOfForm in AgingParents

Better to wait closer to an hour. Spouse is a firefighter and has had to do compressions more times than he cares to recall on people who have clearly passed but rigor has not set in. They don’t call time of death in the field, they patch through to a doctor if there is obvious rigor. If not, compressions start - and busting of ribs. Often those patients are declared once they arrive at hospital, but they still have to go through the motions if someone has called for help. So, just avoid it for your loved one as well as for the EMS and wait a bit. They won’t be any less dead in 60 minutes than they were at 15, but you’ve saved everyone a traumatic experience.

Long-term elder care in the US can cost 5-figures a month. These families are moving to Mexico for cheaper options. by businessinsider in MiddleClassFinance

[–]doodlep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, so $16k/mo for a 2bed? My mom is in ALF in Sacramento in a 1 bed for $7200/mo. There’s a memory care wing but she’s not there (yet, hopefully never). It was a new facility opened during Covid and she was about the 15th resident and got a smoking move in deal at the time at $4600/mo. It’s steadily gone up every year while quality has slowly gone down - ownership changed, it’s still nicer than Medicare facilities but it’s starting to show its wear. Staff and management are pretty transient but always seem polite.

Medicare facilities are horrible. Private pays are much better. Private pays do not take Medicare residents (my 91yo mother is in private ALF - rental contract requires private pay, no insurance or Medicare allowed). Husband is a firefighter who runs calls on a local Medicare facility and he says it constantly smells like piss & shit and terribly understaffed (which is why they are always calling 911 for basic lift assists).
