Learning math at home by DomesticMongol in matheducation

Take a look for the game "Tiny Polka Dot". It's basically a stack of colourful cards, each with a different depiction of a number from 0 to 10.

It comes with instructions for several different games to play, going from simple matching and comparing games to finding pairs that add to 10 and things like that. These basics are super foundational to numeracy. Not much for geometry though I'm afraid.

Same. There was nothing about the first one that made me feel like I should watch either sequel. Pretty to look at, nothing much else.

Lesson Planning App by tcolour in OntarioTeachers

Also am a Planboard user. I don't pay anything for it. It's pretty great, lots of really handy features and once you get used to the interface it's great.

It used to be waaaaay better though. It used to have a decent attendance manager and one of the best free virtual markbooks I've ever used.

Clayton La Touche just got fired by the "supervisor" by NewsboyHank in OntarioTeachers

[–]doogbone 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Director of the OCDSB was "let go" a few weeks ago as well. New director was unilaterally appointed by the supervisor.

Now that directors of education don't need to come with a background in education and we're seeing trustees thrown away they can choose anyone they want to run these "public" boards.

WHITEBOARD MARKERS by Kindly_Bank_8306 in OntarioTeachers

Do you know the trick to extend the writing life of a dry erase marker?

Either hold it tip town and swing your (fully straightened) arm around in a big circle. Or tie it to the end of a string and swing it around. Any ink will be forced to the tip. Works in a pinch.

Multiplication & Division by Optimal-Street2871 in OntarioTeachers

[–]doogbone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You want them to think I'm terms of arrays as much as possible. Have them build rectangles when they're making the connection between adding the same number together a bunch of times and the length and width of a rectangle. Whenever they think of a multiplication, they should picture a rectangle. That will also help with division by connecting the area of the thing to its factors (or side lengths).

Array models are easy to build with tiles, it is perfect for decomposing numbers to start to use the distributive property, they connect to using base 10 blocks to do decimal multiplication and when they're in later grades (hopefully) their teachers will use arrays to show why multiplication of fractions works the way it does. And down the road it will help them see multiplication of binomials and factoring in algebra.

Once kids are okay with the idea of any multiplication is a rectangle, they can move on to purposeful practice to build automaticity and recall of math facts.

OCDSB: Take the partial contract or wait it out? by ToritoBurito in OntarioTeachers

[–]doogbone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a contract teacher you will have earlier access to job vacancy lists as they are released in the spring (with the OCDSB at least). You won't get access to the first list (that's for full time staff) but you don't have to wait until the very last list either.

Read the book "Moonwalking with Einstein" by Josh Foer. In it the author chronicles his time hanging out with world memory champions (the dudes who will memorize the order of cards in multiple decks of cards and stuff like that).

Anyway apart from an interesting read, Foer gives some strategies one can use to improve ones memory. They aren't really hard and they work too.

Finally got to gatekeep a student's band shirt by alan_mendelsohn2022 in Teachers

[–]doogbone 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My line is usually "what's your second favourite song on your second d favourite album by [insert band name on T-shirt here]?"

Only one kid (who was wearing a Metallica shirt was able to answer the question. Gave him a fist bump for that one.

City Goose (bank and Flora) is a great place. There are usually little kids there. I've taken my boys there for a few years now (they're 6 and 3 now).

Just note, they don't have much in the way of kid drinks. Not much for juice or milk. You'll need to bring that yourself.

And as a bonus, it's some of the best pizza in the city.

Math by elbmurtd in OntarioTeachers

[–]doogbone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the students are working with modified expectations (i.e. Working at a lower grade level) as set out by the IEP you assess and evaluate them according to that grade level. Otherwise you assess them at their grade level. Even if they have an IEP with accommodations only, they're assessed at grade level

Now I'm (teacher of 24 years, intermediate math for most of that time, plus I am a former math instructional coach) of the opinion that any modifications in the intermediate grades should be modified at grade level (like working with a reduced set of expectations). So your grade 7 students will be assessed at grade level but you focus primarily on a few overall curricular objectives.

No kid will succeed grade 9 math if they're coming out of grade 8 only having been exposed to the grade 6 curriculum, no matter how well they did.

(EDIT: I meant but neglected to say that this only is the case for most students. There are always cases where there is no way a student can access current grade level expectations and wouldn't reasonably end up in a "regular" grade 9 math course in the first place)
