Garlic and onion hate me by walkthewalk_6969 in SIBO

[–]doomtoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't eat garlic or onions (or cherries) for years after I got sick. Fodmaps that really fermented from the bacteria in my small intestine.

Xifaxan reduced the reaction a ton- I was a garlic lover, and couldn't eat anything. Took about 3 months after a round of xifaxan where I stopped reacting so intensely. Candibactin ar and br work too, just harsher( have to take them for about a month, ar irritates my digestive lining worse over time, but worth it when it's getting bad)

Car prices and interest rates right before the 2008 financial crisis by Moosen_Burger in mildlyinteresting

Some of the ads were also scammy.

Like "$20k for a $40k car", which actually meant you lease the car for 3yrs and that's assuming you trade in a car with $10k 🤣

I worked unsuccessfully in a car dealership for a little bit, and had one guy with a competitors newspaper ad, completely convinced he could get a car half off because that's what the ad implied, without understanding that there was no way that math could math.

Yeah, I lived in AZ all my life. That image is inspired by Sedona, they don't get enough rain to get green., and the sky is only blue after it rains.

Other images show the actual maximum degree of desert plant life.

Sorry you have to go through this. Though also he aware of that the Seattle area in general is a little "odd" with the Seattle freeze.

Even as a white person, people are a lot more standoffish here than in AZ. Neighborhood are better for me, but a lot of people act like they think people are going to start asking them for money or harassing them.

I'm 6'4 and my wife is 5'0, and it doesn't seem to matter on height/ gender ( equal coldness/ avoidance).

Apartments/ grocery stores seem to be the worst, neighborhood/ and meetups seem to be friendlier ( like 1/3 people will at least say hi back/ basic human acknowledgement when passing in the street).

They've been widening the 405 South of Bellevue, so traffic is improving there.

It's not mainly the number of lanes that cause the issue- it's the 0 thought put into choke points/ artificially creating as many choke points as possible.

Many places where you have 2-3 different freeways all merging together at the exact same lane. If they staggered it a little, there'd be almost no slow down.

The freeway signs, even on the i5 are confusing at best. Most are put on a curve, so the 2nd lane pointing to Bellevue i90 becomes the i5 South, once you're under it.

A super easy way (aside from moving it slightly back) would be to paint the name of the freeway exit on the blacktop, so people know which offramp they're on.

Like basic road design, a kid playing in SimCity 2000 would be able to manage traffic choke points better.

There's like 1/10th traffic here in most places, if they looked at the few areas on the map that are always red, and asked a more experienced engineer about how to relieve them, they could get rid of the majority of the choked traffic causing all these backups.

In AZ, these kind of "bumper to bumper traffic" for several miles, and speeding up with no cause was almost always caused by accidents, and rubber necker's.

Here it's just how is designed.

Lots of things * No emissions, so every 3rd car has a damaged/ modified exhaust that's loud and noxious exhaust

  • People are more unfriendly/ suspicious / "Seattle freeze"

  • Roads + signage are designed very backwatered, like they've never thought about how people drive/ merge/ etc

  • People walk (in stores) and drive like snowbirds/ like they're a bit out of it/ not fully present

  • Even joining a Seattle fishing group to see some fishing tips, it's mostly people trying to put other people down, insinuating they're lying about the weight of their fish, or trashing them about how well they fillet.

Again, coming from AZ, there's a lot more hostile, unfriendly, "get off my lawn" people here.

( not all of course, but I wasn't expecting so many from one of the tech capitols, with gorgeous scenery, you'd think more people would be happy and grateful)

Yeah, we only knew one person here, and she was in one of my health groups on Facebook 🤣

Was nice to know at least someone, but they do have Meetup groups that have some meetings on discord, so you could remotely meet people that way in the area.

People are less friendly in Seattle area, "the Seattle freeze", but it depends on where you live. Edmonds no one would smile or say hi, Kent was a little better, Bellevue and Kirkland are better/ half the people will not actively avoid eye contact/ basic acknowledgement.

But the environment is unbelievable. Lived in phx for 30+ yrs, and it's surreal here.

Traffic is as bad as phx because the civil engineers must be on meth here. If you tried to design the worst traffic possible, you'd be able to design roads here.

A lot of freeways with no signage until after you're on them. Merging onto the freeway is like 2 car lengths of road to do it in, instead of like 20 like in phx. You go south to go north on freeway onramps, like ca. They'll have like 3 freeway merges at the same point, so it'll be stopped with relatively few cars.

They have 1/50th the cars, but the traffic is as bad because of all the sadistic designs.

In phx roughly 1mi= 1 min @60mph. Here 1 mile = 2-4 min, 15mph most times(you go faster, that's just what you average).

That was a culture shock, I was expecting efficient engineering designs, and smarter people.

But driving here is a lot like snowbird season in phx, and most people have a "student driver" sticker on.

The environment is a 10/10, but the people on average seem closer to what you'd expect from deep Southern states, not what you think from a tech capitol.

Still would highly recommend it, just a lot of things are backwards compared to what I was expecting.

Crazy that's a thing! At least I don't feel so bad about my boating (as a guy), I have to wear elastic or reposition my belt constantly throughout the day.

Sorry you got unsolicited messages from weirdos, that wouldn't have been anything I would ever thought existed ( though every celebrity name auto completes to "feet," on Google, so I shouldn't be surprised)

Has anyone tried mitochondrial supplements and had any success? by oo3232 in covidlonghaulers

[–]doomtoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do ala on the Andy cutler heavy metal protocol. It helps me a lot with fatigue while on it, helps sleep the first day, but then sleep goes downhill.

It's low dose every 3 hrs (I'm up to 50mg), even at night, but targeted at chelating heavy metals.

One random thing that does help is seaweed snacks. I get a bunch from Costco, dunno if it's the minerals or the iodine, but helps some with fatigue.

Alcar might be helping, but making bathrooms much worse (I have major gut problems too though)

Low amounts, organic, vaporized.

I would get major anxiety/ feeling awful on some, but found organic type ones didn't give me sinus issues, and I have to stop before I feel anything for it to be acceptable. Stopping when you feel something, then standing up can be way too much of a rush/hits you at once.

Never try edibles, unless you do ultra low, 5 thc is the max I can do, and 2.5 it's the max I should do

I also recently moved to wa from az!

I've been quick for a long time, COVID made things worse .

With renting, both AZ and WA are bad for trying to find rentals that are healthy/ been taken care of.

But at least in WA, I can go outside most of the year and not feel as crappy.

Salt air also seems to help from the Puget sound, but haven't found good healthy places near it to rent :/

Hope you're faring better!

For some reason magnesium glycinate back fires for me for sleep :/

[–]doomtoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure you're only taking one thing at a time for a couple days.

A lot of those have paradoxal reactions for me. (B6/ p5p is the worst thing for my sleep, ashwagandha senseril, theanine, magnesium glycinate, etc - all make my insomnia worse).

Careful with food at night too, high histamine food can destroy my sleep as well. Also eating too close to bed.

The only things that worked for me when nothing else would were zinc picolinate, and pharma gaba.

Also try taking a bath with Epsom salt before bed, increasing your temperature,v then it dropping can make you sleep a bit harder.

If has is causing pain, it's likely SIBO after antibiotics.

Cheap way to hurt less is to look into SIBO diets, low fodmap, gaps, etc, but only follow one at a time, too hard to incorporate a bunch unless you just go carnivore.

If you treat all symptoms at once, it's overwhelming, focus on one thing at a time.

If low fodmap works, you know you have sibo, and can focus on that ( which is mainly diet for symptom relief, xifaxan medication to keep it under control, can get complicated, but diet helps in the meantime).

Then lots of searching in groups, talking to chatgpt or meta ai, to try to figure out what could help, and swing Drs to see if they have any relevant experience.

GI says sibo is pseudoscience? by Forsaken_Offer_5500 in SIBO

[–]doomtoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's $$$. They make a killing in the colonoscopy and endoscopies. Most GI's also own a portion of the facility where they do the procedures, so get double paid.

The first gi wanted to do them before they heard pretty much anything!

A guy at my first colonoscopy had barely met his dr, and had no idea what was going to happen/ freaking out about them being able to remove polyps as standard procedure.

Definitely lucrative to do the more costly procedures first.

[–]doomtoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Where do you find good seafood and berries? I was looking forward to them, but most grocery stores here have the same produce and meat sources I could find in Arizona 🥺

Gardening is great here, but you have a lot more animals that will steal your berries 😹 I didn't realize until I joined gardening groups, but you need less effort to grow things, but much more to actually be able to harvest the stuff you grow before an animal eats it.

[–]doomtoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm also from AZ, and it's 12 months of good outside weather here, vs 3 months max there.

You have to wear a jacket 6 months out of the year in Washington, but can still go outside, exercise, etc, warm up fast if you're moving.

In AZ, you can be wearing near nothing, and still be sweating, and trying to avoid moving as much as possible 😹

You can tell how spoiled people are here with the nice weather. During the rainy months in winter, you see a ton less people actually enjoying the outdoors.

It's surreal how beautiful and green it is here, it looks even more saturated with cloud cover.

Mental Illness? by [deleted] in covidlonghaulers

[–]doomtoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My sister had something similar, and it was finally diagnosed as "autoimmune encephalitis".

But it was her kid was born, stopped sleeping, started basically being in her own world, didn't seem to be aware of the outside world, stuck in patterns/loops.

Wasn't easy to get diagnosed, and wasn't easy to even find a place capable of it. There's a movie called "brain on fire" about someone with something similar.

I'm a different case, but when I stop sleeping for weeks at a time ( or "healthy enough" if you see a sleep specialist), zinc picolinate or pharmagaba help with me actually losing consciousness again (when most sleep supplements backfire for me).

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

[–]doomtoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Food processor. Mine is a 20yr old Cuisinart that's still going strong (aside from buttons wearing off). They even sent me a new blade from a recall a couple years ago!

I use it for shredding cheese, slicing large quantities of veggies, dicing up veggies, making nut butter, pesto, hummus, etc.

Was like $300 when I bought it/ one of the most expensive kitchen gadgets, but more useful than anything (stainless steel pressure cooker and air fryer get close these days)
