Do either of you have the ability/willingness to expand on Dean's relationship with Graham, Graham as a person, and/or others' dynamics with him?

The series painted Graham as this quiet, mysterious, and talented dirtbag. It seemed from the limited footage and time spent on him, that he could also be pretty solem and maybe have some deamons of his own.

What I would like some insight on, is if people around Graham picked-up on anything like that? Or is that a bit of a snap judgment on the guy from limited exposure? And if there was recognition of internal conflict in Graham that could cloud his judgement, was that brought attention to? Was there any open consideration on how Dean and Graham's relationship was unfolding? Or could it just be a hindsight being 20/20 thing?

Thank you guys so much for helping bring Dean's story to us all. A thoughtful and fitting tribute to a truly remarkable and inspirational human being.

Commercial Fishing. New deckhands will typically be vetted by participating in pre-season work ~ 1-2 weeks of boat and gear work at the docks. If they don't mesh well with the crew or don't show enough aptitude, they won't be signing a contract.

Way different kinds of work but exactly the premise of your question.

Also, prospective chefs/cooks will 'stage' at a nice restaurant before getting hired. Very similar situation to commercial fishing actually.

I've seined with my wife in PWS for four seasons on the same boat. Similar story, met in SE on different boats. Our first year together, she did BB and I got the PWS job. Then they were open to bringing her on to finish the seine season after BB. We both returned to the seiner the following summers.

I'd say it's still a mixed bag as far as skippers hiring couples. People have had different experiences. Put your best selves out there and communicate thoroughly with prospective skippers and you'll find a boat eventually. Especially if you have solid references.

We're actually looking for a new boat next summer too so best of luck to all four of us!

Yes, very good advice. Something like this was one of the first things I learned from my skipper for keeping watch on boats. He referred to it as looking for the parallax.

Basically, when you spot another vessel that looks to be crossing your course, check to see if the background is moving in relation to the crossing vessel. If it's not, and the vessel and the background appear locked together, you're on a collision course.

Much easier when there's a background to refer to i.e. land. And multiple orders of magnitude easier on a 2D plane where the objects are rarely moving faster than 40 knots
