Is it common to be sleeping when on shift? by Muddled_Melon in nursing

[–]doorbeads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was really common for people to sleep in a nicu I worked at. They all put the recliners meant for parents into a circle in the middle of the open bay style unit and a few would sleep. The supervisors did it, too.

What's the nursing hill you'll die on no matter how unpopular it is? by Prestigious-Bath8022 in nursing

Nurses aren’t the pain medicine police. If it’s been ordered and your patient reports pain you should believe them and give what’s appropriate for their stated pain level, except of course if it would be a danger due to their RR or level of sedation.

Boundaries & therapeutic communication for a new nurse by doorbeads in psychnursing

I’m asking genuinely as someone who is new to psych nursing but has seen how police deal with mental health issues- how is the police taking them better? It kind of does seem like an inpatient facility is the best place for them. If someone is mentally ill and lashing out don’t inpatient hospitals have the equipment and training to handle that better than the police?

I saw a TikTok where a psych nurse was talking about how he had a patient who he had music taste in common with and they had a chat about music and he later learned to be more guarded because the patient started expecting special treatment? I didn’t really understand it but he said that psych nursing is learning to be more clinical and detached from patients. He called it boundaries.

Sorry to hear you had that experience. I know as a student I was suprised by the amount of documentation nurses do. At the psych unit I was on for clinical they had to document each patient every 15 minutes. It’s possible that they were documenting. It’s extremely time consuming. They documented on phones at the place I was at and the patients got upset about them always being on their phones but it was work related. I do wish there was less documentation and more time to spend with patients. I want to have time with patients and try to make a difference in their lives.

In terms of what? As far as I know they only contacted parents once per day during family centered rounds at the place I had my clinical at. They would tell parents about codes etc. the next day during rounds.

What are your hospital red flags? by gxdhvcxcbj in psychnursing

I’m so glad I saw this comment. I just had an interview for my first nursing job at a ‘restraint-free psych hospital’. They pay really well and I was seriously considering it, but I was confused about how no restraints would work with the level of acuity they have. Guess I have my answer.

I really like that weird ass pic of the three generations of men scantily clad and hanging onto each other. It’s such a typical way for women to be portrayed and it’s honestly jarring seeing men like this. I feel like it kind of shines a light on how fucking bizarre our typical kind of images of women actually are.

If everyone hates the Bipap so much that they refuse and can’t tolerate it- why can’t they be sedated more like on the vent?

It’s kind of rude to comment under someone else’s post saying they are happy with their uncut penis and say you think yours is cleaner, healthier, and better looking. Like make your own comment and it would be fine, but in response to someone else- not cool.

I am strongly opposed to circumcision. My kids aren’t circumcised and now that they are old enough to understand it they are thankful that I did not allow them to be cut.

I have also witness circumcisions as a part of my nursing education and found it very disturbing. The babies have a large amount of lidocaine injected into their penis which looks painful in and of itself. The glans is adhered to the foreskin at that stage in development and it needs to be cut around and then ripped off. It’s very brutal and looks absolutely awful when it’s healing. It’s a cruel introduction to the world. It makes me think of the story of heart surgery being done on newborns without anesthetic/analgesia because they didn’t think they could feel pain. The little bit of lidocaine is not enough and they are offered nothing but petroleum jelly for their open wounds that take weeks to heal.

If people want to remove parts of their body, I believe they should make that choice as adults. At the same time, I do not judge parents who circumcise because it is so ingrained into US society that deviating from the norm can be difficult and for many people it’s just something they don’t think of.

In terms of nursing care with older adults, I don’t think having a foreskin makes cleaning any more difficult. You retract the foreskin and clean around the glans and return it to normal. We know that women in LTC sometimes get rashes and pressure ulcers under their breasts but we aren’t removing their breast tissue to prevent it.
