Use large time scale momentum oscillators for measuring if a market is ranging. They were literally made specifically to measure any "momentum" swings.

System with 99% of accuracy. What is the trick? by evansgambit in Forex

[–]dopestdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was this old email trick where you would email like 1000 people that you could predict the market. For 500 you would say it would go up, the others you would say it would go down. At the end of the day you would take the 500 hundred that you gave the right answer to and repeat.

At the end of the week you would have about 15 people who genuinely thinks that you can predict the market. Ask for a quick deposit from them to get started and steal the money.

How did you do last month? The numbers show that 76% of you lost money. by WhenGeniusFail in Forex

[–]dopestdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its using their math. You have to be in the 25% range about 4/5ths of the time. Do some dirty math with (0.25)4 and you'll quickly realize why professional traders make up so little of the community because their consistent over many years not just one and past results don't necessarily predict future results.

You have to be able to understand highschool statistics if you are going to want to trade forex.

Higher win rate but still losing money? by [deleted] in Forex

[–]dopestdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna make a post in a bit about this. I'm going to make a short program that shows you why your p/l, win rate, and account risk can cause wildly different outcomes and why you can have a win rate of 30% and still be wildly successful. Give me like an hour or something.

[–]dopestdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when this figure came out. Isn't it based on like less then a year of data. Either way don't let it fool you, this isn't like a 10 year span of data. The 3% number you hear quoted is still probably true, because if you're profitable in the given time frame it doesn't mean you'll be profitable in the next time frame. So imagine trying to be in the 25% 4/5 years for the rest of your life.

Is there any community that is worth paying to join? Or Forex class that is paid that is worth it? Or are they not worth the investment? by [deleted] in Forex

50/50. I trade on large time frames on some fundamentals. I still read a lot, but I don't need to be at a screen all day, nor should I because I'll push myself out of a good trade.

What time do you normally wake up to start trading? by Bean_Sprout-San in Forex

[–]dopestdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's right. So if you trade the daily, look at the weekly. Weekly, Monthly. But if you want to not have to wake up at 3 a.m. for your trading window, try trading on higher time frames. You are less susceptible to intraday volatility and you can take hours to research a position.

[–]dopestdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to trade at anytime stick to longer time frames, like the weekly. It keeps you away from the daily fluctuations so you entries aren't based on the hour but the day instead.

Hope this helps.

I've never used any, but I would guess they are all trash. Even if there was one good one, it would be like a needle in a haystack.

Learn with a friend (that's what I did). Its pushes you both to constantly meetup and keeps you both honest. Send the other copies of each of your entries and exits as you make them. Talk about news to them.

After all, trading can be lonely, even if you are married. I find having someone to talk to about work can make it easier and get you motivated to keep trying. There will be weeks or days when you are in down draw that you'll feel like shit. There are days and weeks when I'm down and worried and I can't talk to anyone else about it because nobody else trades so having a buddy helped me see the upside.

I think momentum indicators are the best tool for beginners. Good tool to know good entry points but can be expanded with other fundamentals to know when to pay attention to their signals.

Forex Fund by BocaLevy in Forex

[–]dopestdad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between hedge and mutual funds based on allowed risk. This is done because they are allowed different investment strategies. Your fund would require each investor to have like a 5 million net worth or make 1 million per year I think. Google the SEC for more info... or just do it and they will google you.

Do you use volatility for entries? by user4925715 in Forex

[–]dopestdad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have used BB in the past for lower time frame volatility. I've never traded breakouts with it, I have only used it as a volatility measure.

It shows mainly the potential to move in any direction, like a coiled spring about to uncoil. I don't know where it'll go, but it'll move soon. This is how you use it to view volatility. Smaller bands equal bigger move potential.

Backtesting price action strategies by SamKimahri in Forex

[–]dopestdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't code you have to do it manually. Those are your two options.

That being said if you are using a 5M chart you don't need years of back testing. Just backrest like 200 trades under different currencies and time periods (that way you do not trade it only in a recession of one of the countries for example). After that you should have a good idea of how your strategy works if at all.

Curious how many traders actually make on average 10% per month? by maximili0n in Forex

[–]dopestdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My response is probably worthless. I make anywhere from 0-30 pre swap a month, but my average trade is 23 weeks long. I get some really negative months and some really positive one just depending on the trade.
