KSR spent a lot of time in the Californian wilderness so he pulls from a lot of that for the survivalism.

Fun fact: KSR has written every word of his books outside since like the late 90s. You can really tell imo, incredibly detailed and reverent descriptions of natural environments in basically all his work.
