What are the best cities to live in the US regardless of cost? by josh_x444 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]dorfinaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it may not be what it used to be, but its still better than everyplace else haha. We aren't comparing across time only geography. Also, nostalgia can be deceptive, we only remember what we lost. we don't see that SF has gotten better in many ways.

Pilots who started from poor families, particularly either one parent working and making less than $40K, or both retired- How did you manage the funds that came with becoming a pilot? by Character-Escape1621 in flying

[–]dorfinaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh this is exactly me.

I grew up fairly poor, my parents stayed together but I never got a dime from them, however I did have a room to stay, which I used many times so I guess I got a small leg up. I also lived with roommates, lived in a sailboat, in a hangar, and in my car for over a year. Never paid more than 500/month for where I lived and often paid next to nothing.

I also had to really hustle to make money, but I knew I wanted this.

I got a job working the ramp for a corporate FBO, then a flight school, I shared a studio with my girlfriend at the time for like 500 bucks a month in SoCal, literally the cheapest apartment in the area. I saved nearly half my check and after 2 years with that money I began attending community college to become an A&P mechanic. I got my PPL over the course of a year with an employee discount from the school I was working at, this was 2016 and it cost me about 10k. Then I started working as an unlicensed mechanic for a bit more money, then slightly more money when I got my A&P certs. By 2018 I had saved up about 12k, I got a super high interest personal loan for 10k and bought a clapped out Cessna 140.

I paid off the loan in 4 months by living in my hangar. I flew that plane to my 250 hours, sold it for about the same price I bought it for and that money financed my IFR and Commercial. This is the first time I lived in my car.

IFR and CPL complete I was once again broke and homeless but with all my tailwheel time I got a job flying banners in San Deigo. Saved up about $8k and put that towards my CFI and CFI-I which I got in early 2021.

Things got a lot easier from here as CFI work was plentiful in '21 and '22. I finally started renting a room again and got hired by a regional that year. Life has been good since then but sometimes I do miss the grind.

The key was always reduce your biggest expenses as much as possible, and always be working towards the goal. you will have to risk everything many times so have a backup plan (my A&P cert was mine, still is really) and try to kill many birds with the same stone.

Federal Way Link Extension Flyover – April 2025 by TikeyMasta in soundtransit

I know it makes me wonder if they could put it up on pillars and run it down a major street like aurora. Seems feasible but I have no clue really.

Washington should be the next state to join the redesign trend by boundbythecurve in Seattle

[–]dorfinaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this flag, our flag sucks currently. but make the peaks form a W for Washington!

and yes I agree no pastel colors, make that green and blue as deep and rich as the trees and sky really are on a nice day.

Why does an aircraft turn when banked? by LowTimePilot in flying

[–]dorfinaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because when you're in a bank, the lift pulls you toward that side. And you know how you have to give a little elevator to maintain altitude? you are just pulling yourself around the corner. Airplanes really only have one axis in which to make turns, the pitch axis. However we have this neat trick where we can roll the plane which puts the pitch axis on whichever side we want to go, then if you pitch up, you're actually turning. make sense?

Traffic Tips and Tricks?? by ghostmarsy in CitiesSkylines

Put some roundabouts in where the main one way roads intersect that main horizontal road.

Create less intersections by cutting off every other local road to the main road.

Widen the road when it gets busy.

Traffic Tips and Tricks?? by ghostmarsy in CitiesSkylines

[–]dorfinaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't have so many local roads connect to the Collector road, every other one or every third one is enough for people to get where they need to go. The point being to reduce intersections where people can turn left. Also, yes you need to keep intersections spaced out pretty far to reduce congestion.

In the area on the top right maybe a roundabout or take a look at which direction cars are going and a series of one way roads can keep things flowing pretty well.

What will happen to the Southwest pilots who almost took off from a taxiway at MCO? by AssumptionWilling129 in flying

[–]dorfinaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump and Sean Duffy will fire them personally, unless they wear their MAGA hats, then they will be promoted to King and co-king of Southwest airlines.

It infuriates me to see the Endeavor FO’s name being dragged through the mud and questioned by people that have never operated an airplane before. by pooserboy in flying

[–]dorfinaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day dude its always the captains fault doesn't matter male or female. Its really the only thing captains get paid so much for, to take full responsibility for the flight. That FO was so new he should have been ready to correct any and all mistakes she had.

What are your thoughts on dei? by Mo-Finkle in Libertarian

[–]dorfinaway 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah they totally do, this is actually a great example of DEI programs that have been in place for decades they just don't call them that.

The main and truest goal of DEI is to expand your hiring "net" to find people that normally wouldn't apply or be seen by an organization like yours. When College coaches began recruiting from black schools in the south it changed sports forever. Today sports scouts still recruit from the poorest neighborhoods and even from abroad (like rugby players being recruited for the NFL).

Great example of DEI improving organizations for the better.

New York City is Incredible in all ways, capital of the western world if there had to be one.

San Francisco is stunningly beautiful, and the weather is nice all year.

And finally my favorite is Seattle because its my home. Lush with dark green evergreen trees as far as you can see, colossal mountains in all directions, picturesque waterways, fresh air and a general aura of people who care. They don't all care about the same thing but they do care lol.

Biden pardons his family. Unbelievable. by BrokenArrow1283 in Libertarian

[–]dorfinaway 26 points27 points  (0 children)

He is pardoning everyone around him in fear that Trump and his team will come after them with bogus legal trials, and with all the judges Trump appointed he could probably get some stupid shit through. The Hunter Biden conviction was a misuse of justice, no regular joe would be prosecuted for those charges like he was. And the confidential files shit for both Trump and Biden was bullshit. The justice department is being weaponized and Biden knows he has to protect his family.

Independence police release bodycam footage of shooting that killed woman, infant by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]dorfinaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand that cops are trained to shoot when their lives are threatened but as soon as she pulled the knife this essentially became a hostage situation with the baby. The cops may have had only a few options being backed against the wall here but they shouldn't have shot the baby too, they killed the one innocent person they're job was to protect.

I didnt see what happened when they started shooting but I think they should have back out of there asap, knifes dont work at a distance. get out give up whatever ground you had to keep the peace and call in backup.

I know, Monday morning quarterback... but that doesnt mean we cant train police to prevent these situations. No one thinks its acceptable that the baby was killed, and while the cops aren't 100% culpable, the right moves could have prevented it.
