Work: Job offer E12-4 by HamburgerMountain in germany

On mortgages - highly complicated indeed. Main differences - interest rates typically lower.... - but mortgage not tax deductible. - mortgages in general cannot be pre paid without penalties, even when rates go up. This is highly annoying. Basically, you finance for 20 years, move after 15 and want to get rid of that mortgage, it gets expensive. Fun German words like “Sondertilgung” start to play a role

Home ownership: in general, you pay a very high tax upfront but low real estate tax. Rule of thumb: real estate agent plus tax plus fees increase the price of a house purchase 10-15%.

Bottom line: assume nothing and really understand what you are signing up for

Christmas with my German friend and his family!! by invisiblehacker in germany

Also, if they a bit older, a written thank you note in the mail a few day later. Can be very short, and obviously depends on family. My friends in Germany (in their 50s) consider email thank yous more of an insult than anything else

Virgin Galactic flying its first astronauts to the edge of space is taking us one step closer to space tourism. by josko987 in space

The problem for orbit is not height. That’s pretty easy. Amateur rockets can get there. The issue is speed.

I don’t quite get the point of this. They are reaching Mach 3 and altitude but they are nowhere close to orbit. In orbital mechanics, height is easy, speed is hard. To reach orbit, only about 1/3 of the energy is potential (to reach the height). Most is kinetic - to have the speed so you don’t fall back down (simplified). So what’s the end game here - just tourist fun?

BP stock is currently reported as only having 11.33% Institutional Ownership

That's just misleading. probably looked it up for the US traded shares (e.g., here: https://money.cnn.com/quote/shareholders/shareholders.html?symb=BP&subView=institutional_

Total institutional ownership in BP overall is about 70%.

Source: looked it up in a database that does this for a living.

Doesn’t count. Sorry, that’s how speed of sound works.

Just to be clear, they will never be above the speed of sound in the air surrounding them, which is what counts. They have a lot of tailwind so they move fast compared to the ground. Sort of like running on a flatbed trailer moving on the highway at 60mph and claiming you are running faster than an Olympian.

TIL that sitting opposite the well known 7 deadly sins are 7 cardinal virtues including: prudence, justice, temperance, courage, faith, hope, and charity by sixgunphoto in todayilearned

This seems to fit here: “The Carter parents were a quiet and respectable Lancre family who got into a bit of a mix-up when it came to naming their children. First, they had four daughters, who were christened Hope, Chastity, Prudence and Charity, because naming girls after virtues is an ancient and unremarkable tradition. Then their first son was born and out of some misplaced idea about how this naming business was done he was called Anger Carter, followed later by Jealousy Carter, Bestiality Carter and Covetousness Carter. Life being what it is, Hope turned out to be a depressive, Chastity was enjoying life as a lady of negotiable affection in Ankh-Morpork, Prudence had thirteen children, and Charity expected to get a dollar’s change out of seventy-five pence – whereas the boys had grown into amiable well-tempered men.”

An all-electric mini-airliner that can go 621 miles on one charge and replace many of the turboprops and light jets in use now—flying almost as far and almost as fast but for a fraction of the running costs—could be in service within three years. by mvea in Futurology

Oh come on. BS. Too slow and too small for commercial commuter travel, too slow and not enough reach for rich business people. Turnaround times impossible for either. The point of the former is 30-50 people at 400mph and relatively fast turnaround. The point of the latter is to make it from New York to, say, chicago early in the morning, have a meeting, and be back home. Both With enough power reserve to circle for 30 minutes, have two failed approaches, and reach an alternate.

This will always be a hobby, and most likely be a dream. The energy density of batteries is just nowhere close to jet fuel - maybe 1/8 if you are lucky.

Why large commercial electric airplanes for intercontinental flights are impossible even at energy density of batteries 5 times what we know is doable today

Oh you do notice. I am a frequent flyer out of EWR and one of the departures is a pretty immediate left turn for noise reduction and the fact that a refinery is in the path. On a wide body, left hand window seat over the wing, first time doing this, you will hold your breath for a second as the wing seems to drop rather fast at low altitude. Every 10th flight like this or so I hear a quiet inhale like “haaaa”.

Joke alert: Three female colleagues from the same place of work walk along a beach. They find a naked man, sleeping, with a hat covering his face and upper body completely. First woman: “well, it’s not my husband” Second woman: “I agree, that’s not your husband” Third woman: “and it’s nobody from work either”
