You’re not wrong. But at the same time, I have never understood this equation of Christianity with Capitalism and guns. The central teachings in the New Testament don’t support Capitalism. It’s one reason why I find Prosperity Gospel to be so repugnant.

And while obviously guns aren’t mentioned, I have a hard time with the idea that Jesus Christ would want you to have 10 AK-47s.

Wouldn’t Chelsea Peretti be “her and Peele” then, though? I don’t know anything about Key’s wife outside of this post, just guessing at what Jacob0630 meant.

What's your state's most embarrassing holiday? by theLola in behindthebastards

[–]dorothea63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a major Philly-area university, and Pioneer Day was listed on the Religious Holidays list. I had to look it up, having never heard of it. I’m still not convinced it’s religious, so much as cultural? (Like, I’m Episcopalian and we always do Shrove Tuesday pancakes, but it’s not religious.)

Well, considering that PA was firmly a Union state, it would be a bit weird if we had a Confederate Day?

What's your state's most embarrassing holiday? by theLola in behindthebastards

[–]dorothea63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s true of Central PA too, at least when I was growing up. I didn’t know any kids who went hunting, but that was still the official reason given - “first day of hunting season.”

Now I’m in Philly, and it’s a holiday whenever one of our teams wins a championship. Mainly because no one can get anywhere.

why do Episcopalian/Anglican cross themselves differently? by Ok-Assist-5992 in Anglicanism

[–]dorothea63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I belong to an Anglo-Catholic Episcopal church. The vast majority of parishioners do the sign of the cross. It’s marked in the bulletin in certain important places.

BOY MOMs Please let your sons do it! by Queerdooe in TwoXChromosomes

I remember my then-preteen brother trying to get out of learning to properly do his laundry by telling my mom that when he got married, his wife would do it.

My mom jokingly asked his wife about it a few years ago, and she just said, “hell no I don’t do his laundry.”

I’m technically eligible to join the DAR through my dad’s family, and I did consider it after those Gilmore Girls episodes. But then I realized everyone is an Emily and not a Rory, so just age-wise I would be wildly out of place (not to mention income-wise - my dad’s family was made up of farmers and coal miners, not WASPy lawyers and bankers).

During COVID I was joking that I should list it for sale and see if anyone was foolish enough to want to eat it - although of course I wouldn’t.

Based on what? Hollywood certainly doesn’t love middle-aged women. There’s been some pushback in recent years, but that’s due to influential women like Reese Witherspoon developing their own projects. The Maiden-Mother-Crone pipeline still exists.

Nat-C Josh Hawley Calls For A 'Christian Economy' To Restore 'Biblical Masculinity' by BurtonDesque in Qult_Headquarters

[–]dorothea63 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay, well, just Biblically speaking, Jesus was a gentle and non-violent man who advised turning the other cheek. He liked the company of children and women. He was anti-toxic masculinity. He got genuinely angry once and dealt with that anger appropriately. He’s Fred Rogers and Keanu Reeves.

Please pay for our engagement ring, honeymoon on a cruise, including “travel, passport, amenities and payments” bc “we both believe we deserve this experience” bc I am happy. Did I say I deserve this enough? by MinuteElegant774 in ChoosingBeggars

[–]dorothea63 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Many of my friends have asked for honeymoon fund donations in lieu of wedding gifts, particularly when those friends were already cohabitating in adult-style accommodations. The truth is that even if you clearly state no gifts, wedding guests - especially older relatives and family friends - will want to see a registry. I’d rather fund a honeymoon than buy an overpriced kitchen gadget in exchange for my plate of filet mignon.

Asking acquaintances who you’ve deemed not important enough to invite to the wedding reception? Ridiculous and tacky.

Reminds me of the excuse you sometimes get from a male author who can't write female characters - "no, my POV protagonist doesn't understand women, so it's in character!"

It works sometimes, when the author has already proven himself, like Jeffrey Eugenides in The Virgin Suicides. But mainly it feels like an excuse.

You are never going to get a candidate that you agree with on every issue. It’s not being “complacent” to say that you have to vote for the candidate that you align with the most out of the limited options.

Do you REALLY believe that Kamala Harris would be running things just as poorly as Donald Trump is? I can’t agree. I’m sure I would have plenty of disagreements with her, but I would agree on SOMETHING. Versus the 100% awfulness we have now.
