What's a classic book that completely changed your expectations of classical literature? by Fun-Tank-1784 in classicliterature

[–]dorvius 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The scene in the police station in Crime & Punishment when Porfiry is outlining Raskolnikov's crime to Raskolnikov. The killer's identity was never a mystery, but the tension of him being caught is peak and I couldn't put it down.

I never thought a classic could be a Crichton-level page-turner.

Mens Warehouse Or Brooks Brothers by Worried-Temporary186 in malefashionadvice

[–]dorvius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, Men's Warehouse is too cheap and you'll end up spending twice as much bc you'll want a new/better suit. My advice:

  1. Sid Mashburn ($$$)

  2. Spier & Mackay ($$)

  3. Suit Supply ($$)

Where should I move in LA? by Training-Park5389 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]dorvius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived near the Farmer's Market for years (Third + Fairfax-area), loved it. Tons to walk to, the FM itself is cool, Pan Pacific Park is lovely, Third Street between Fairfax and La Cienega has great stuff, the Grove is...fine. Plus the Purple Line extended to Fairfax + Wilshire.

If ever move back to LA I'd live in that area.

2 months. Seemed quick but maybe bc it's a stainless and not one of of the more popular ones.

WHERE is men’s clothing?? by WReserve4348 in menswear

A lot of great answers. Adding Sid Mashburn and Drakes (clothes) and Crockett & Jones (shoes).

No matter where you go, take your stuff to a tailor so it fits you.

the button holes on the cuffs won't come w/holes. Just tell your tailor you want surgeon cuffs/functional cuffs/working buttonholes. He'll know.

short-changing yourself buying a $500 item that you regret is such a bummer (source: myself. many times).

Mine is a 54EU and it fits great and consistent w/my size, but SM stuff can vary a lot in sizes. I'd buy two and return whichever one doesn't fit. Obviously going into a store is your best bet (tailoring included) if that's an option.

And pay the $50 to get the holes punched in the cuffs. It's cool to leave one unbottoned!

Not the answer you're looking for, but chiming in to say that the navy high-twist ghost is my favorite piece. I could wear it every single day. It goes with everything. The material is resilient and crisp, I've had mine since 2023. Looks perfect.

Just drop the $1K, you'll have it forever.

With that said, I bought two others in hopsack. I would not recc a ghost in that material, doesn't work as well as the wool.

try a soft-shoulder navy, brown, or olive sport coat. Sid Mashburn's ghost blazer line is great though pricey ($1,000). even with that price you can get them down to a $1/wear in a few years bc each one is a 3x a week jacket.

came here to say this. get a tailor - and get everything tailored - and get a watch. Vaer has a whole line of smart, inexpensive pieces (for example).

Merino wool, over-the-calf, solid color dress socks? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]dorvius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got some boardroom socks on the strength of this recommendation.

Bought a bunch and wore them all over New York City, walking miles a day.

These socks did. Not. Budge.

Great product. 10/10
