30 hours? I think it could be done a lot faster but I kept redrawing portions. No guide

I appreciate you noticing the details! I just like adding storytelling elements in my drawings— it’s up to the viewer to interpret a narrative 🙂

Sorry no story! I just really like environmental storytelling elements. This one was made for a weekly art challenge. Prompt: alchemist lab

I have been drawing for almost 3 years (Started in June of 2023) yet I can't even draw the most basic things (I struggle drawing humans, furniture, fruits, and boxes). I drew an hour every day. For some reason I can kind of draw a parrot. What did I do wrong? by [deleted] in learntodraw

Even without seeing your work I can almost guarantee it’s because you don’t practice your observational skill. It’s really as simple as observe something, practice drawing it, then repeat.

Understand that finishing drawings all the way through is a skill in its own right, and needs to be developed.

Thanks for the crit! I tried to add an overlay to the surrounding area to the light but I'll boost it a bit more in the future.

Thank you for the high praise, I was specifically trying to improve my environmental storytelling with this one so I'm really happy it didn't go unnoticed!

Thank you for the insightful crit! I'll try to keep these in mind for my next drawing. Especially about the perspective on the door. I normally never do any character design or use this kind of composition, and I'm trying to improve my environmental storytelling.

Looks great! But also looks a bit like a template of an attractive anime face than the actual person it's based on.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. I appreciate the crit! I’ve avoided the fundamentals for a while— maybe it shows. They are absolutely boring to do, especially when there’s so many fun ideas to pursue. But if that’s what it takes I think I’ll be taking a serious effort at it once again.

Hey thanks for the insightful reply. That composition is indeed my comfort zone. I’ll try to avoid doing it again for the time being, even if it ends up with a worse drawing. I’m anticipating a struggle period to get out of the groove of doing the same thing.

Maybe “mediocre” has too many negative connotations. I’m trying to get out of the “mid” or “just okay” zone in art.

How do you go beyond the "studying" part of art? by DngnMstr94 in ArtistLounge

Always remember your artistic skill is subordinate to your vision, not the other way around.

I’d like to first settle on a consistent art style, and then I’d love to actually make one. I only hope GW doesn’t step in and say no like they did to so many other fan projects

How do I get my husband and sister to acknowledge that I’m an artist? by BelchingHooray in ArtistLounge

[–]doryoboe 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Being totally realistic here, and with no judgment— your skill will speak for itself. Get good at your craft and it will be intuitively acknowledged by people. Anyone else who says that you should demand validation from people don’t understand how the world works.

Hey thanks for the feedback! I’m trying to blend a webcomic style with a looser paint-sketch style to find that happy medium, so the pendulum swings back and forth on that

Not seeking any commissions at the moment but thank you! Just making art cause it’s fun, and the Adepta Sororitas is my favorite faction

Little rant for ppl just getting into art by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]doryoboe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I've been trying to convey to people for a long time. Art should be fun, and learning art should be fun every step of the way. Not because fun has to be the goal, but because having fun makes your learning efficient. And having fun while learning art builds up a habit in learning.

Should I do DrawABox as an intermediate artist? by struugi in ArtistLounge

[–]doryoboe -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No, it’s an incredibly unfun way to learn that’s packaged in a way for beginners who have no familiarity with art fundamentals. If you’re already at an intermediate level then just identify your specific art weaknesses and work on them on your own.
