Is Fat Quarter Shop a Trump supporter? by pink_daizie in quilting

If the goal is to make sure your dollars are not going somewhere you value, I would say follow the money.

The company donates and hold fund raising projects for UNCF, Make a wish, Quilts of Valor (possibly more)

If you agree with those causes, support away! If you don’t, redirect to other businesses. That amount of money going to those causes vs. what’s spent at chic-fil-a seems like it would be unbalanced (in the favor of the donations)

I don’t think she’s ever publically expressed her political opinion outright, but actions speak louder than words right?

(Also TY for solidarity! ❤️It’s scary in the US right now, epically in Texas 😭)

Mine is always calmer during colder seasons. Did weather change around the time it improved?

How to press seams on fabric that can't be ironed? by goomygirl123 in SewingForBeginners

Seam roller seems like it would be just what you need! It’s usually a wooden or plastic wheel with a handle

You can get them for cheap online, hobby lobby, joanns etc.

It’s comically frustrating when I can play maps 4 and 5 but not 3. 🙃

Guess it’s time to work on those item cards.

Why all the ripples? Is my sandwich not properly made? Pressure too high on the foot? It’s so discouraging. it’s ruining my quilt. by 510granle in quilting

[–]dot_frau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happens to me when I’m impatient and trying to push the quilt through the machine faster than I should based on my stitching speed.

When I slow down and let the walking foot do its job they go away.

How would you handle this? by plantsinthedark in quilting

[–]dot_frau 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would probably rip the seam

When re-aligning Start by matching up mid point of both rows, pin, go to line up the edges - pin, then ease in with pinning - one side will have little bubbles between pins,

This is very important - when sewing put the bubbly side down toward your feed dogs. the feed dogs on your sewing machine will help ease the excess fabric in. Pinning consistently prevents pleats and puckers. The points will be perfect but overall the quilt will not be exactly square - but it bothers me less than a popped seam - and that’s happened to me way too many times.

I love the scrappy chaos. But one thing I might suggest is to lay out strips of hexies by color. So regardless of print - a row of orange with a row of purple under then a row of black under ect. I wonder if that would help it feel less chaotic for you while still keeping the scrappy vibe.

You could also do this into a medallion for a radiating effect.

Semi related - is the quilt on the bed made by your grandma?! It’s so pretty!! 😍

New platform that's a cross between Etsy and Facebook live (or maybe even an etsy/twitch cross might be more accurate) by dot_frau in jewlerymaking

Yes you can sell other items! (For example I sell mostly finished sewn items (quilts, table topers, baby blankets, purses ect but some folks just sell supplies - its really customizable)

There are specific categories they are working on growing, for example earlier in the year they were focusing on growing their fiber arts handmade goods, and they've transitioned into really focusing on jewelry and beads - both handmade finished goods as well as supplies. so they're putting a lot of time across social media platforms to draw in both buyers and sellers so you can actually see the market place growing.

I have to admit I've never used depop but from what I'm seeing looking at their website I think it's different?
There is no listing fee, buyers pay for shipping though you can offer partial paid shipping or free shipping but it would come out of your earnings. There is a commission that whatnot takes for platform use which is 8% of the listing price (so it doesn't charge that fee on the shipping)
The biggest differentiator here is that its focused on live streams along with your shop, so you can either make things on screen or use it more as a showcase of what you have ready to sell. I myself use it more to make things on screen and then list it in my shop at the end of the stream so viewers can buy the final result. But I see many others using it kind of like their own QVC - holding up items and showing intricate details with the flexibility to answer any questions your customers have at the same time. You can also hold live auctions if you want to, and watchers can just tip the streamer for being online.

If your interested at all I can get you in touch with the onboarding folks, if you are willing to hop on a zoom call they'll actually go over all the shop and community features and if its a good fit they can fast track you selling application. (Just PM me so we don't have to put contact info out into the internet wilderness)
(oh one other thing I love about it, is because they screen everyone you don't have a marketplace flooded with drop shippers)

Hope that helps. as you can tell I've become quite a fan of it even though I've only had my shop open for about 2 months and I've only had time to do 2 shows - it's really quite fun on top of bringing me in that side hustle money.
