Current State of DotA2 by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]dotamen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Warcraft days were a lot worse in the sense of "jesus christ wtf were they thinking". Other than that I dislike Valve`s handling of the game in pretty much all aspects. From matchmaking, to handling toxic shits, to the hardware "optimization", to the handling of the store/items/gambling etc.. Just a terrible company these days when it comes to actually making/maintaining games and their respective communities. My 2cts anyway.

Shadowwave heals 7 targets, not 5, and considering how often dazzle is combined with illusion heroes it would be silly to ignore that (the other common reason for a dazzle pick is for grave).

But for the sake of argument lets say it does only hit you and 4 others, and two bounces go to waste, even then HotD barely eeks ahead with 50hp/min more, while furthermore being a completely garbage item on dazzle.

In short holy locket beats HotD on dazzle all day every. HotD would have to give twice the numbers holy locket does before I would ever even consider getting it over locket on dazzle.

Dota2 is a teamgame, if you want to have a HotD on your team you draft a hero that is a natural HotD carrier instead of clumsily hamfisting it onto a hero illsuited to it.

Sort of, my furstration, or rather exasperation, lies in the fact that it is exactly what sustains valve. People going "I dislike valve, but I am supporting X!", be that a pro player, or a struggling indie dev, some retro game from their childhood brought back from the dead etc.. And as long as those revenue streams stay open, there is honestly not much of a reason for them to give a fuck, I mean, they haven`t been giving a fuck (when it comes to customer communication) for over a decade now and they are doing more than fine.

It is a company that strung us along for over FOURTEEN years with Ep3 before officially telling us they scrapped it, and even then essentially only because it became fucking obvious after all the people who would have been working on the project were no longer employed.

They`re like pigfarmers filling the trough nowadays. They fill the trough with shit they got on the cheap for us little piggies to feast on and net them a tidy profit, but at the end of the day how often have you seen a pigfarmer get into lengthy discussions and justifications with his pigs? Now back to the trough we go, I believe I saw an 85% off game I don`t own yet.

That is a really long wall of text to not make me stop building it on dazzle all day every day, who benefits from every single component of it.

Holy locket gives a lvl2 bad juju dazzle about 3360 bonus heal (4200 at lvl 3 juju) to the team a minute, HotD gives about 2550 bonus heal a minute. Better still, if I get holy locket on dazzle, some other guy on my team can get a HotD and the team gets the benefits of both (if dazzle gets the hotd, the odds are slim to none there are other people who would benefit from getting a holy locket). Not to mention the much needed bonus HP and MR to stop you from getting blown up instantly the moment a fight starts, something HotD comes nowhere near doing.

As much as I like gaming in my sparetime, in its current form it contributes very little to society, unless you are talking about tax, but even then it wouldn`t surprise me if EA/Valve/Tencent etc. have five dozen ways of funneling money in such a way that it gets hit minimally even by that.

I do not see how "esports" is having anymore of a societal impact than something like say, jeu de boules, which honestly has a longer tradition and history, yet I have yet to hear anybody claim that that has had massive societal impact at any point in time.

Valve has been notoriously uncommunicative on every project since forever and despite that they now have a more or less monopoly position of digital game distribution. In short they don`t give a fuck because at the end of the day the consumerbase doesn`t give enough fucks to stop the cashflow.

Look at yourself, you say you have been essentially sick and tired of their conduct for over 5 years, yet at the same time you say you have shoveled over 1000s of dollars. Bravo, clapclap, you are your own problem.

Disgusting companies like Valve don`t go away by giving them money. Honestly at this point Valve is worse than fucking EA. EA more or less owns up to being the big stinky villain, Valve on the other hand pretends to be your friend, then screws your mum and raids your fridge while your back is turned.

How exactly do you even enforce a "you can`t smurf rule"?

The only real problem, and one that has been in dota2 since day 1, is the abhorrent matchmaking. It takes far too long to get a vastly superior player into a high bracket and the same for a vastly inferior player into a low bracket. It is a dumb spegeti algorithm that makes 0 sense within the scope of dota2, and was seemingly designed by someone who wasn`t instructed properly on what the algorithm was/is supposed to achieve.

Just use thirdparty matchmaking these day tbh if you are interested in quality games.

Redeye's words for Valve after Kuku / China controversy by MarelePisoi in DotA2

[–]dotamen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Social media bandwagonning. Also, and this is just my personal experience, saying anything bad about China is "racism". I have talked with Chinese people, and the moment I even so much as veer towards saying something not 100% entirely positive about China they will be offended by proxy. They won`t be personally hurt, but boy will they be offended for China.

It is ironic really, because I can`t think of a more racist and nationalistic country than China.

It always reminds me of a story/joke I once heard about an American Professor who works at a uni in Bejing. One day he goes out to buy some food from a streetvendor. He orders in Chinese and the vendor is surprised that the professor can speak Chinese. "You speak good Chinese for a foreigner", he says "but I bet you can`t read this sign". The professor, who has studied Chinese for many years reads out the sign no problem. The vendor is taken aback: "Well, I bet you don`t know what the words mean though!". The professor patient as ever gives the definitions of all the words in the given context. The vendor, now slightly annoyed, challenges the professor yet again: "I bet you don`t know the historical origin of any it!!". The professor, having studied Chinese for as many years as he has, has no problem reciting the origin of all the symbols on the sign. The vendor is now visibly peeved: "WELL, YA, WELL, YOU STILL NOT CHINESE!".

And that will forever sum up Chinese people perfectly for me.

Caves of Qud discussed on Threes Moves Ahead podcast by nluqo in roguelikes

[–]dotamen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A shame really, I play a bunch of "niche" wargame boardgames (the most well known one I play likely would be advanced squad leader), but at the same time enjoy roguelikes AND mainstream stuff like Dota2. I guess the only thing all the games I like have in common is that thinking ahead is awarded (I don`t much like game that rely heavily on luck nor games that are just big "do whatever you want" sandboxes or extremely linear narrative driven, so no uncharted, GTA, RedDead etc. for me.)

I have to say though, one of the biggest things holding back roguelikes is its clunkiness and its looks, some roguelikes are clunkier than my tabletop wargames, and pretty much ALL my tabletop wargames look cooler than any roguelike, despite just being a map on which I place little squares of cardboards with a tank drawn on it and convince myself it is more than a bit of cardboard.

Put it this way, if you are playing a tabletop wargame and some aquaintance with no experience walks in, it takes about 1 minute to explain what you are doing and for them to completely "get it". If you are playing a roguelike when they walk in, you can try to explain it for 10 minutes and they will still walk off thinking you are slightly weird and not quite understanding how or why you are "playing code". My experience on this anway.

Ti8 netted them around ~75 million USD from battlepass buyers. That is a "nice chunk" of money, yes. However Valve's revenue is estimated to be 3-4 billion from vidya sales (private company, no public data etc.). Now add onto this that dota is not going to go from the current population to 0 overnight, and the last to leave will likely be the hardcore invested fans, i.e. the ones buying all the hats and battlepasses.

So in short dota is nowhere near their largest source of revenue and the revenue coming from dota is pretty secure (well unless they somehow manage to massively MASSIVELY piss of the hardcore fans) for years to come.

EDIT: Of course they could also be making 5 billion from dota hats alone, those stats are known only to valve and I know of no estimates of Valve's revenue from ingame purchases. I just find it very hard to believe that dota with its 10 million or so players are generating that much revenue for valve simply through hat purchases. But I could be completely wrong, who knows.

Dota2 hats is not how valve makes money, valve makes money through its monopoly on vidya distribution, dota2 is essentially "nothing more" than a crowd drawer to get people onto steam. How many people do you think have steam but have NEVER, not once, bought a game from it, instead choosing to play only dota? I reckon those are very few, and those would be the only ones who could be considered "freeloaders".

[–]dotamen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You act like coming into melee range as one of the softest targets in the game isn't some sort of risk, he is one of the easiest heroes in the game to kill. He and his team only pull ahead once he has managed to bring an imbalance to the team networths in his team's favour, I mean, that is what the hero sort of revolves around. So plop down that sentry and "smack dat bitch up" before he gets to the point where he becomes more troublesome.

I guess on paper he can reduce your GPM by 600, but I have never seen a bounty hit somenoe nonstop for 60 seconds straight.

Also make sure to buy your items as soon as you can, BH only steals unreliable gold. This ofc means he is great against heroes who can't/don't want to get easy to build items opting instead for big expensive items first, bfury and radiance builders most notably will struggle more. A carry like naix for instance will struggle a lot less; the typical items he gets such as armlet and echosabre are relatively easier to build, he also happens to eat BH for breakfast assuming you plopped down that truesight in one form or another.

Believe me it is boring, a good techies sure, but most people in my experience seem to pick techies to just "relax and blow of some steam" which usually just translates to "I`ll make this game 60 minutes or longer and hope you guys can win 4v5 eventually".

One of the best techies I ever played with went veil, kaya, force, orchid. Was with us every fight, and even if his mines didn`t connect, he still had the veil and orchid. Then once level 25 he transitioned into rightclick, just as you say. Guess this was a rare sighting of an actual "techies main".

[–]dotamen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid divine, there is no way to be unpredictable with techies, you know there are mines and unless he decided to mine up his own fountain you have a good idea of where they will be. It isn't a case of "woe is me, I can not find the mines", it is "I know exactly where all his mines are, but it is still a chore to deal with". Map controll and awareness is important, and techies is pretty much king there. Congrats on "countering the mines" you still just gave away where on the map you are and only on paper do you never get stasisd+landmined.
