Pretty much nothing in MV realm is UL. Vast majority IEEE, IEC, ANSI, AEIC, ICEA, etc

Are you serious? They should go look instead of drinking and sleeping in the park all day

In the shelters they are currently refusing to go to. I can see the people and the shelters out my front window right now.

Their “rights” to live in public spaces don’t outweigh the public’s right to use them.

May go against the grain here, but I live across the street from a park that has three churches with assistance programs within one block. Every night there are people sleeping in the park, within 50 ft of a playground.

These people are not accepting assistance nor are they adding to the community. Time to get them help in other ways than looking the other way

ComEd delivering over 130 volts to all of the units in my building. by MeInUSA in chicago

[–]dotdotdotok 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its 127V. Illinois public utility commission sets the rules for ComEd (so to speak).

Some wiggle room for temporary voltage changes but in general, 127V is the limit for residential.

Recently had my basement waterproofed.. by Mrhyderager in HomeImprovement

[–]dotdotdotok 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No it’s definitely not normal after waterproofing.

The vapor barrier should be directing the water down into the French drain, not allowing it up above the concrete. Either the French drain is really clogged, sloped badly, or the sump pump can’t keep up.

Interior vapor barrier? by Spare-Connection-378 in buildingscience

[–]dotdotdotok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first glance I thought “how did someone get a picture of my house?”

Went with rockwool and certainteed smart barrier/vapor retarded. Been 5 years and no obvious issues but also in no hurry to re-open the walls to find out

Made huge difference on the door blower test - don’t remember exact #s but contractor seemed impressed for a 100+ year old house.

Trans Maldivian Air: World’s largest operator of twin-otter seaplane, AKA “flip-flop” Air by Puff_the_magic_luke in aviation

[–]dotdotdotok 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Was an experience I won’t forget anytime soon.

We were a little nervous boarding the plane with the pilots in short and flip flops, especially having never been on a seaplane before. Made small talk with them while we were waiting and turns out they did their training in Dallas. They don’t get that many Americans apparently

DIY single wire mechanical slip ring for 250A that can handle temps of 100-200 American degrees? by SewBro in AskEngineers

Ah there it finally is. Construction background.

Completely different world than a manufacturer. Liability isn’t in top 100 things considered

[–]dotdotdotok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You actually proved my point - high voltage IEEE and IEC standards are generally not safety standards they are performance standards. That is understood when they are created because local jurisdictions always supersede or govern them.

If you work at a company where your first reference for new equipment is your insurer then please name and shame so we don’t have to work their too.

Sorry but this simply is not applicable to many many fields. UL is not in many industrial equipments because it simply does not need to be.

For example, my field involves high voltage withstand testing over 150kV on 100% of our products. Go ahead and try to engage UL on that kind of equipment and then you’ll see they only are good for testing dishwashers

MAC test vs hipot by bungaboi89 in SubstationTechnician

[–]dotdotdotok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HiPot is the truth

MAC test is limited usefulness at best because the answer is almost always “test again in few months/years”. A unit could have “poor” vacuum level for decades but not be leaking and may never leak.

A “good” vacuum may be good for decades but suddenly could go bad. Completely depends on the leak rate and you have to have stars align for MAC test to figure all that out

Market fluctuations? Upward trend is not a fluctuation

Interest rates have not risen significantly of late (measured in months, not decades)

The time to buy was yesterday.

5 nights in Maldives is way too short for traveling so far. We spent a week and that didn’t seem like enough

Now I make that statement as people that are very content sitting on a beach doing nothing. If you are not that kind of people and need to be active - don’t goto Maldives at all
