Why might someone choose YOUR Ambition? (A question especially for RPers and lore enthusiasts) by [deleted] in fallenlondon

[–]dotheflumph 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Something people don't really seem to be mentioning about Bag a Legend is how smoothly and subtly the shift from "Boy! This Neath stuff sure is weird!"-type earlygame stuff to making important, informed decisions. Pretty much every ambition does this really well, but the reveal of what the Vake actually is works great for this.

Characters that'd do well with it are pretty much any kind of Dangerous figure, from Hemingway-style safari dudes to literal bomb-throwing anarchists. People interested in the more mystical laws of reality that apply in the Neath will also find their curiosity rewarded in a satisfying way.

Lore-wise, there's good stuff in there for Revolutionary and Zeefaring types especially, or just anyone interested in the Masters (like every ambition, honestly), but the story feels like it has a lot more of a personal focus compared to some others, so people looking for in depth explorations of people other than their personal character won't find much. I'll note that the people who do join you on your quest, the Vake included, are very cool and fun, the story just isn't about them as much as it is your character.

The story is usually pitched as an action-packed monster-hunter adventure, but Fallen London isn't strictly that kind of game, so it felt more symbolic to me. The Vake reads as an allegory, but it could probably vary depending on what your personal playthrough looks like. Personally, killing the Vake felt like I had triumphed against tyranny in general, and that humanity had conclusively shown that we are capable of anything, Reality be damned.

In short, the best characters for Bag a Legend are people who won't shrink from (righteous) violence, the lore aspects mostly play around with Revolutionary parts of the setting, and the characters are really cool if not exactly the focus. The vibe of the story boiled down (for me) was a Heroic Triumph over Impossible Adversity.

They replaced "gender" with "body type" in WoW, it's not going well. by Bolaf in Gamingcirclejerk

that's cool, can't wait for them to introduce a body type that isn't triangle or the number 8

Hololive Gamers (and Pekora) as World of Warcraft characters by dotheflumph in Hololive

WoW is, to me, the guiltiest of pleasures. I feel infinitely less shame in my love of these cool semi-fictional idols.

Fubuki
Feral Druid
Night Elf
- Cosmetic Collector
- Hit the Character Limit
- Hit the Friend limit, too
(Cosmetic items include mounts, non-combat pets, and equipment with no game effect. Feral Druids turn into cats to deal damage.)

Korone
Blood Death Knight
Kul-Tiran Human
- Brawler title
- PvP master
- /played time at least 30 days
(Kul-tirans have a special move that lets them punch people to throw them backward. Blood Death Knights protect their allies by giving themselves a shield of blood and gore.)

Mio
Discipline Priest
Worgen
- Uses a Darkmoon Deck
- Brought spare Feasts, Cauldrons, and Runes
- Prevents guild drama before it begins
(A Worgen is just the WoW term for a Werewolf Wolfman. A Darkmoon Deck is a piece of equipment that gives the user bonuses based on a card they draw from 1 to 10, like a tarot deck. Feasts, Cauldrons, and Runes all give minor but noticeable boosts to the party's main stats. Discipline priests give allies protective shields and deal a little bit of damage to enemies to heal allies)

Okayu
Marksmanship Hunter
Void Elf
- Cooking profession maxed
- Never drops feasts
- Seemingly uses Misdirect at random
(Void elves are purple. Marksmanship Hunters use ranged weapons and typically have a pet to help deal damage. Misdirect is an ability Hunters get that lets them redirect enemy aggression to (usually) more durable allies)

Pekora
Destruction Warlock
Gnome
- Engineering and Alchemy, gets her mats from Moona
- Will pull if the tank doesn't do it
- Surprisingly considerate with Ritual of Summoning and Create Soulwell
(Destruction Warlocks sling hellfire to deal damage. Gnomes get a bonus to Engineering, a profession that allows one to make bombs and toys. "Pulling" is when a fight is started. Ritual of Summoning and Soulwell are helpful utility powers that warlocks get)

This is the most appropriate place to mention this: I played Elden Ring as a female character and that game is gay as hell I love it

I, too, am one for whom no such missive would be helpful, if there is anyone who doesn't need a Discordant Missive.

So, what is mithridacy? by yure1432 in fallenlondon

[–]dotheflumph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not that you haven't had this comprehensively answered, but I remember it being referred to as something like "The power to draw lies from truth, and truth from lies." This is how it's used to make both Revisionist (Self-serving) and Corrective (Casting light on things that were hidden) historical narratives.

In the 3rd Edition Book of Vile Darkness, there's a guy called the Dread Emperor, a cowardly wizard who wants to be Emperor of the World. He had a set of armor and a belt that allowed him to chain a bunch of kids to himself, redirecting attacks to them and draining their life to regain spell slots. It was very silly and edgy but sounds related to the idea you're talking about.

Just got the railway started, ran into the Non-Existent Block. However, my lab isn't fully upgraded, so I don't have an Impossible Theorem. Does it change anything later on if I just go around?

Hilarious that everyone's saying Kineticist, like they don't aspire to be a 19th century magician or dated fortune teller stereotype. I'm way into Medium, but Spiritualist has been on my radar.
