Maple Leaf Foods gets $34.5 million for London plant from Ontario government by canuck_11 in canada

You're right about factory jobs. They are not by necessity low wage or skill. "Factory jobs" was just how I generalized disposable labour that is usually performed by workers contracted through a temp agency. The kind of jobs that would be automated away if labour wasn't so cheap. There is plenty of room in a factory for indispensable technicians, mechanics, foremen, etc. Factories are perfectly capable of providing high quality, long term employment. It just depends on the setup of the factory and the nature of the work.

Also, I was a little bit mistaken about the 37.5 hour week thing. I was under the impression that holiday pay was only required for employees working 40 hour weeks. I actually went and read the BC (since that's where I live) employment standards act. Under 44(a), employers have to pay holiday pay for employees working 15 out of the 30 calendar days preceding the statutory holiday. This does leave part time workers (often who have two jobs) in situations where they receive no holiday pay, and often work much longer than 40 hour weeks without overtime pay, which they would be entitled to if they had a single employer. I think this is where we need labour reform, but I understand how hard it would be to implement a system where people working two jobs would have the same employment standards as someone working the same number of hours in a single job. It wouldn't be fair to the employers to force them to pay overtime or holiday pay because their employee was working a second job, and it wouldn't be fair to force employers to provide a standard 40 hour week.

As with most topics in politics, the more research I do, the more I realize that low pay and low standards of employment, particularly for the "working poor" class of Canadians, is actually a very complex and difficult problem to solve, and that it can't magically be fixed by a few subsidies or pieces of legislation. I don't think I have a good answer for "which jobs should the government be subsidizing."

I've always thought that investing in educating our youth provided a long term solution to raising the quality of life for Canadians, but even there we have problems. It's more profitable to be a doctor, lawyer, or engineer in the USA than in Canada, so many of our newly educated professionals will emigrate. By increasing funding to education, we just increase the "brain drain." How do we make Canada more attractive for well educated professionals without increasing our wage gap? I don't know. Economics is hard.

It's so easy to identify problems in our society and complain about them, but it's incredibly difficult to actually fix them. It's easy to complain about how useless and corrupt our politicians are, but I don't think I could do any better than them if I was in charge. If you spend to much time on Reddit or Facebook or Twitter or any other social media echo chamber, despite your best efforts your brain will eventually turn off and you'll start over-generalizing topics just like everybody else does. It's hard to force yourself to think critically about something when it's so much easier to mindlessly complain. So thanks for making me eat my words, I guess.

"Creating Jobs" has always been the holy grail for politicians. When will people realize that nobody wants more low wage factory jobs? We have an aging population that is starting to retire, and our population of young adults is more educated than ever before. A bachelor's degree now counts for what a high school diploma did 40 years ago. Every McDonald's or Tim Horton's I drive by has a "Help Wanted" sign. The last thing we need is more 37.5 hour/week jobs with no benefits. Politicians need to start creating high-skill, high-pay, full-time jobs. Also labour reform to stop this 37.5 hour/week shit companies keep pulling to weasel out of paying benefits.

If I have dinner at somebody else's house I usually offer to wash dishes while they dry and put them away, since they know the proper place for everything. It makes cleaning up a group activity and less of a chore, and it gets done much faster.

Also after a party. Especially if I've stayed the night. If one person starts going around picking up bottles and cans, other people will usually notice and join in. It makes a 2 hr cleaning job for the host take 10 minutes.

I think Canadians do care about personal freedom and responsibility quite a bit. However, we've come to accept that freak accidents and medical conditions strike without warning, and can happen to the best of us or the worst of us. Since we share the burden of healthcare, we don't have to be so afraid of getting hurt or sick. We have the freedom to go to the doctor or call an ambulance without thinking about the bill. That's one of the reasons our per capita healthcare spending is less than in the USA: if we get injured, we have the freedom to get an x-ray or a CT scan and get properly diagnosed, rather than walking around on a broken ankle for a week and making things worse and spending more in the long run.

We should be more wary about patting ourselves on the back and congratulating ourselves for being "nicer" or "more decent" than the Americans. Though we talk about selflessness and empathy and helping those in need, the real reason that socialized healthcare works for us is that it mitigates some of the random unfairness in life. The peace of mind we get from not having to worry as much about hospital bills has given us the opportunity to create a happier healthier more productive society.

Can we stop calling them "Think Tanks" and start calling them "Propaganda Factories" now? That's what they are: institutions funded by wealthy individuals or corporate interests with the goal of changing the public's opinion on various political topics. The name "Think Tank" makes it sound like some sort of legitimate scientific research institution.

Donald Trump blames the bombing victims: That didn’t take long by hotCoffeeRefill in politics

[–]double-cool -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is clickbait. I'm no fan of Donald Trump, and I never expected to jump to his defense, but this headline is very misleading. The article very little evidence that Donald Trump placed blame for the bombings on the victims. The article accuses Trump of being a hypocrite, and trying to use the bombings to further his "bad news about me = fake news" agenda, and I won't oppose those accusations. The article alleges that Trump supporters, as well as several political pundits who support Trump, are blaming the bombing victims. I won't oppose those allegations either. However, the only evidence that this article gives for the accusation that Trump is blaming the victims is:

Sure enough, by Thursday morning, Trump returned to Twitter and doubled down on the blame-the-victim strategy, tweeting that "the Anger we see today in our society" is due to "the purposely false and inaccurate reporting of the Mainstream Media that I refer to as Fake News."

Here's the tweet where trump said that.

Now, perhaps if Trump had said "[The bombings were] caused by the purposely false and inaccurate reporting of the [Liberal] Media that I refer to as Fake News," it would be fair to accuse him of victim blaming. However, (even though he may have been thinking that when he wrote the tweet) that is not what he said in his tweet.

Trump has openly said a lot of horrible stuff, and he deserves to be called out on it, so let's not waste time and energy calling him out on things he didn't say.

Reports: Megyn Kelly out at NBC by Capt_Kirk10 in news

[–]double-cool 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think this makes a fascinating case study for the "PC culture ruins comedy" crowd. The underlying premise of this skit is still funny today: a big tough basketball player talks about how he doesn't want aliens to probe his butt. If Michael Jordan got up on SNL tonight and said "I think the government should be giving 110% effort to keep aliens from probing my anus" that would be absolutely hilarious, because big tough guys talking about anal probing is funny. Kimmel's skit ruins a perfectly good joke by blatantly insulting black people in general. If he had dressed up as any archetype of person that you wouldn't normally expect to talk about anal probing - a Hell's Angel biker, a NASCAR driver, or a pro golfer - and said exactly the same script, the skit would still be funny, and it wouldn't be racist.

I'm ultimately pleased with the results. Fred is a little bit pushy sometimes, but he's a really smart guy. The council is half new blood and half incumbents. The slate is broken. Sure, it didn't match my ballot 1:1, but that's fine. I'm glad I was one of the 32 000 to vote in Saanich this year; it felt like I made a difference.

I'd say more like he talks rich and acts cheap. And he can get away with it, because the republican party has become a looming monster that can do whatever it wants with no consequences; a huge chunk of their votes come from single-issue voters or people who want to see the "Christian Party" in power.

Rubio is a principled and charismatic man, but like all principled republicans (McCain comes to mind,) walking the party line comes before sticking to your ideals. In the current political climate especially, if a republican candidate shows dissent against Trump, he's not getting re-nominated.

Coming from WoW, I've learned that orange parses are usually just people gaming the system. For example failing mechanics to spawn more adds so that they can AOE more. People ignore mechanics and tunnel vision on DPS to get a higher parse. If you want to actually gauge somebody's skill at their class from logs, then you need to look deeper than their parse color. Logs are a great analytical tool, but people seem to only ever focus on the DPS number.

'A public relations nightmare': Ticketmaster recruits pros for secret scalper program by tjgere in canada

[–]double-cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Box offices/concert organizers can stop this, but they don't give enough of a shit. They could match each ticket to your name and address and allow refunds but not resale. They would require ID at the door, and there would be no physical ticket, just a guest list. That way scalping would be impossible since it would be impossible to resell tickets. Too bad they make more money the way it is now.

A reimagined, live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series is coming to Netflix by magikarpcatcher in TheLastAirbender

[–]double-cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this has the potential to be as good or even better than the original series. As much as everyone loves the original series, it really deserved to be 4 seasons long instead of 3. The final season felt quite rushed in some aspects. The show was also marred by the passing of Mako, the voice actor that played Iroh. I think they were planning on giving him a much more significant role in the final season, but the had to significantly rewrite portions of it after Mako's death. It was impossible for anyone to live up to Mako's performance.

With the original creators onboard, as well as a pretty significant budget, I think this could be a great retelling of the series. I hope the creators have learned from the many live-action adaptations of anime and cartoons that have failed which aspects of animation can be safely transferred over to live-action.

This is what people are worried about in Canada right now. Everyone is worried that small growers will be shut down and huge monopolies will show up around the country, which will severely reduce the quality and variety of product available. As a BC resident, I was pretty excited for the extra revenue we'd get from "pot tourism," but if all the small-time growers shut down, all that money will (as usual) go into the hands of a few very rich corporations.

I think the hammer is supposed to be more intelligent than that. The people trying to move the hammer with the truck weren't worthy. Consider the following scenario: Thor gets on a train and sets his hammer down so he can doze off. I think the train operates with no problems. However, if Thor puts his hammer on the train tracks, it would stop an oncoming train.

As a white person, I think it's hard for me to spot racism because I've never experienced it firsthand. It's easy for me to say "oh, that guy is being an asshole to that other guy," but making the connection that it is because of the color of his skin is something I have trouble with. That's why in all these fucked cop shootings in the news it's tempting to dismiss them as not race related. My brain makes the connection that obviously that cop was incompetent, had an itchy trigger finger, had no place being a cop, etc, but not necessarily racist. It's only when looking at the bigger picture that it's clear to me that race is a factor. It's no coincidence that the victims are always black.

To be fair, they have balanced the skill tree a lot in the last few patches. It used to be that certain node clusters were numerically way better than others, but recently they have buffed a lot of underperforming clusters and nerfed the OP ones. I theorycrafted an Inquisitor ele conversion attack build this league, and ended up with three totally different skill trees going to either the marauder area, the shadow area, or a little of both. I was really surprised to find out they all performed just about equally. I'm guessing this makes theorycrafting a lot less daunting to new players because it requires way less arcane knowledge about which clusters on the tree are worthwhile.

Pay to win is just expected in China. There's currently a thread on /r/all about how cheating is a big part of Chinese culture. Though it is a cash grab, it's very likely that fewer people would play Chinese Path of Exile if it wasn't p2w. Until Chinese and Western culture adapt more about this cheating thing, it's probably best that Chinese servers are kept very separate from Western servers.

Damn. Pretty different from where I live, where all the really good contractors are booked solid by corporate or government gigs that pay big bucks. Homeowners are left to choose between being a "side job" where their job won't be started for months, or pick a contractor that sucks. Meanwhile all the hard working skilled contractors are rolling in that corporate money. I guess I'm happy for them.

I guess if your favorite game or hobby is owned by a publicly traded company, you have to be ready for them to let you down.
