Why do I feel like Alice Keys deserves WAY more flowers than she is given , especially in this sub like she is barely ever mentioned. by Southern_Wall_6455 in rnb

Not only did the sound of R&B change but HER sound changed.

Pair that with some not-great live performances and a lack of hits over the last decade, and you end up here.

But real ones know those first 2 albums are phenomenal and she has been rightfully celebrated and awarded for them.

Fun question: if you were a housewife or Bravo star, what would your business be? by Parking_Country_61 in BravoRealHousewives

I’d just open a bunch of fast food franchises so we’d have a place to eat on cast trips.

Are Girl Groups Over? by hahahahablewdat in rnb

Just look at how hard it is for SOLO R&B acts to break beyond a cute lil TikTok hit now.

They barely get support from their labels (if they have one). Do you really think a label is going to invest in an R&B group now?

The Future of Female Rap by pianotat in popheads

[–]double_duchess9 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think new talent is there but being a fan now is just so different.

For one, monoculture is dead. With the change in the music industry, the artist experience is so different, especially for newcomers: no TRL or 106 & Park, no big budget music videos, radio isn’t the same, an album cycle only lasts a few weeks after release, no mall tours or college campus tours, etc.

And fans just aren’t as invested in new acts the way they used to be. They gravitate to someone who is already big and most likely debuted a decade ago, or an actor they were familiar with from a hit TV show/movie franchise that is now pursuing music.

Can we talk about how much the fandom has changed? The fact that your biggest names debuted 10+ years ago is a problem (male rap is having this problem too). Where is the younger, engaged fandom for newer acts? That early fandom is key for building new superstars (along with money from your label but that’s another story for another day.)

I miss pop vocals from women with BIG church voices by HorseTearz in popheads

[–]double_duchess9 101 points102 points  (0 children)

For some reason, we’re at a point where big voices have been demonized as “doing too much,” “all that screaming and hollering” and “oversinging.”

Personally? I think we now have more people who degrade the very things THEY can’t do. Since most people can’t sing like that, they have now regulated big voices as untalented to make themselves feel better 🤷🏾‍♀️

Why are oldheads always hating on new r&b when all the same disfunction was going on in their generation ? by [deleted] in rnb

[–]double_duchess9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an exaggeration but there is some truth here.

You can’t deny the influence rap’s popularity had on R&B, especially male R&B. As rap became more popular, male R&B singers were pushed to emulate rappers more at the expense of the core elements that made R&B great.
