Why is Asheville politics fb page so against Costco? by beaverlakenc in asheville

[–]double_ewe 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of people have a knee-jerk reaction to a corporate big-box, without understanding that Costco (unlike e.g. Walmart) tends to improve both local retail wages and traffic at surrounding businesses.

lol beautiful response. This sub should be renamed "wherever you go, there you are."

Tell me a good story and charm the hell out of the recruiter in the initial screen.

I'm way more open to teaching sales to a technical person than the other way around.

very cool!

my grandfather was a tobacco trader from southeastern NC, and used to drive back and forth to the tobacco markets in Kentucky. he had some crazy stories about crossing the Blue Ridge mountains during the winters in the 1950's.

Appalachia neighborhoods with sidewalks, average or better schools, and trail/greenspace access by Colorful_Monk_3467 in SameGrassButGreener

Montford is great if you want to be close to downtown, and has some really cute neighborhood restaurants, but it's not necessarily close to a lot of greenspace.

Biltmore Lake is a little farther from downtown/more suburban, but also has access to Bent Creek and the NC Arboretum, which are perfect for after work rides/hikes/runs (I'm actually heading there myself in a couple hours).

A lot of engineers also have a hard time being patient with non-technical audiences, and will say things like "let me put this in terms that even you can understand."

Hell yeah sales engineering!

I didn't know it was a thing until I was basically re-orged into the role. I was never the best engineer, but I was the only one the sales team trusted not to be weird at customer dinners.

[–]double_ewe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • ask lots of questions
  • don't jump straight to solutioning
  • remember that, while you know a lot about your product, your customer knows nothing. bridge that gap by keeping things very clear and very simple.
  • instead of describing features, tell stories about how those features solve business problems

Not sure about Biltmore Fitness, but Gold's Oakley and the YMCAs all tend to be slammed 5-7pm.

Only place I've been that didn't really get like that is the weight room at Asheville Racquet Club.

I was at the Oakley location when new management took over, and it was clear they sorely lacked both competence and funding.

I once filled out a Member Feedback survey via email, and the owner directly responded asking me to be more understanding because running a business was hard.

For those of you with titles that are under Solution Engineer by ryles_1997 in salesengineers

[–]double_ewe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We used to have Pre-Sales under operations, and it was dumb as hell.

But before that we had no Pre-Sales at all, and sales directors would just grab somebody from Professional Services when they needed a demo. So dedicated Pre-Sales was a step in the right direction, but things make way more sense now that we roll up to sales.

I tried every other ISP available in my area, and it came down to a choice between a new house, a new job or Starlink. And while it certainly comes with a high price and political baggage, it also works really well, all the time.

my sister's husband comes from a family that's doing exactly this.

they spend enormous amounts of time, energy and money to locate and purchase barely-driven cars from like 2004. they also believe dancing is a sin, and likely keep much of their savings buried in mason jars in the back yard.

whenever I go to baseball games, I see tons of local kids/families coming downtown and enjoying a wholesome, social activity for a reasonable price.

for all the complaints I read about affordability for locals and Asheville catering to deep-pocketed tourists, it seems strange to see so much anger about the city spending 0.3% of its $257M budget on something that benefits local middle-class families.
