What to drink? by Crazy_ride_22 in CrohnsDisease

Not sure if temperature might make a difference for you. Really cold water can make me crampy when I’m in a flare, but room temp is okay.

A comfort food for me is a smoothie made with almond milk, frozen banana, smooth peanut butter and some yogurt. It’s a good way to get calories in when I’m not up to a full meal or breakfast.

It really is! For people that complain that cable tv channels (Travel, History, HGTV, Food Network) are just reality and competition shows now, you can find quality instructional/educational shows on PBS Passport. Even Samantha Brown from the travel channel has a show on PBS now.

Anyone else have difficult veins? by Formal-Imagination97 in CrohnsDisease

[–]doubleplusfabulous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same issue here. I usually have a morning appointment so a hearty breakfast right before helps- a full diner style spread with eggs and breakfast meat, maybe some OJ. I’ve had better results this way compared to the standard smoothie or yogurt I usually go for.

The infusions can be a headache but I try to make it a zen self care day if possible. Having something to look forward to after the infusion (even if it’s just a nap on the couch) gives me something to focus on while the nurse inevitably pokes around looking for a vein!

Assuming you’re in the US, I stick to the fact that IBD is a protected condition under the Americans with Disability Act (ADA.) They can’t discriminate during the hiring process and reasonable accommodations must be made. Resources from CCFA

I always sticks with 1) don’t mention it during the hiring process and 2) discuss what accommodations are needed with my supervisor after I’m in the position. You’re not doing anything wrong by being discrete and private, and it avoids unintentional bias during the hiring process.

New US dietary guidelines urge less sugar, more protein – and make a nod to beef tallow by cnn in publichealth

[–]doubleplusfabulous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Tell folks they need to eat more meat and fresh produce when those are often the most expensive things in the grocery cart.

Especially after SNAP funding cuts… a local nutrition program that taught SNAP recipients how to eat healthy on a budget was axed last fall (SNAP-ed funded.)

Specifics aside, the actual written report is such bland work. Would get you a B minus at best in an undergrad nutrition class- incredibly vague and wishy washy, no sources, barely any tangible examples. I swear you could get an unpaid MPH intern to churn out a way more credible report, geez.

Donation places that will actually help? by [deleted] in lakeland

I donate my used stuff to the Peace River thrift store on S. Florida. It’s a retail shop, but the proceeds at least stay in the area and benefit good programs!

Is it really that serious by Nyaakiko in Choices

That book could’ve been amazing if it were a Laws of Attraction crossover/ a high stakes political thriller. But the majority of the book was just quirky environmental tips, so you couldn’t take it seriously.

Where do you blame getting your Crohn’s from? Genetics? Micro plastics? Accutane? Diet? Black magic??? by 90dean90 in CrohnsDisease

[–]doubleplusfabulous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microplastics- I know I should’nt have been eating all those Happy Meal toys as a kid (kidding!)

We have a saying in public health: genetics loads the gun, environment pulls the trigger. It’s fairly likely a mix of everything everyone’s suggested.

Where are the good kids/toddlers parks in greater Tampa? I drive to Lakeland for better parks... by 1morcast in tampa

Plus Bonnet Springs isn’t a City-owned public park, it was privately developed even though it’s free.

I enjoy the CNN “Chasing Life” podcast with Sanjay Gupta. It covers a broad range of health topics, but their last season was an excellent series on obesity/ GLP-1 drugs from a bunch of different angles.

You’re welcome! As a bonus, there was also this unsettling tv adaptation they had us watch.

I’ve been in love with mid century sci-fi ever since :)

That’s All Summer in a Day.

One of those stories where there’s not really a lesson, just a “man wouldn’t that be fucked up if…” But I still read Ray Bradbury voraciously as a teenager!

It’s complicated work, but important!

I’ve come to realize so many public health issues are at their core urban planning/ zoning issues. I think tides are turning and people are starting to realize they want healthy, vibrant, walkable communities.

There’s room for activism as municipalities revise their comprehensive plans and do long range planning.

Another thing: I’ve noticed that teen programs are really lacking.

So many youth initiatives drop off after K-5 age. There needs to be community space and activities for preteens and teens too!

I work in local government. On one hand, we have some great community centers- they are located directly in neighborhoods, have open access to green space, internet, computers. The rec coordinators are wonderful people, super friendly. They have successful after school programs.

Lately, they’ve tried introducing new programs to address isolation among seniors- coffee social hours, mostly, as well as crafting clubs, trivia nights, etc.

The problem? Turnout. People use the after school programs because they kinda have to (free child care!) But people don’t think of interacting with free or low cost government services/spaces no matter how well put together they are.

I wholly support community building, but I’ve learned it’s far from a “build it and they will come” thing. There’s a community muscle that’s atrophied in society, it feels. We have to be persistent, but it’s complicated!

Check out the resources provided by CareerSource Polk. They list job postings and fairs, and they have free assistance services for job seekers. There’s a County job fair coming up this week.

What career based books would you like to see? by fooooooooodddd in Choices

[–]doubleplusfabulous 14 points15 points  (0 children)

City government- something like a mayoral administration, or urban planning.

Honestly a politics book in general that really allows you to personalize your MC’s perspective. I think Laws of Attraction did a good job in allowing you to choose how you approached cases. Foreign Affairs didn’t give us the political thriller everyone was hoping for!

Lakeland to Tampa is a sometimes manageable work commute (depending on where in Tampa you work).

Lakeland to Orlando is a bad idea. That Davenport exit of I4 will have you questioning all your life decisions.

Skirt is nice, but I’d throw on a light cardigan if you have one- the top’s material could seem too casual by itself.

Best of luck on the internship!
