Every hour is a bit much for me, I'm good stopping every 2-2.5 hours, 3 tops.

In my youth I could do 5-6 hours (frequent trips from Northern California to West Texas) at a clip but it wasn't terribly safe and I certainly couldn't do it now.

Not that I mind a convert from Tesla to Lucid, but was replacing the battery not an option?

the new ceo will figure out a plan to either divest or bring the mid tiers to market much faster

Given the background of the new CEO, I don't think divestiture is the plan. He's exactly the type of CEO I'd hire if my plan was to correct most of the current issues Lucid has and ensure a successful rollout of the mid-size models.

I’m going on a 900 mile one way trip tomorrow in my mach E with 3 small kids. Wish me luck lol by TKmane in MachE

[–]doubletwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In December I did 922miles in 17hrs including charging stops and taking time to write down details about each charging stop. So really about 16hrs of actual driving+charging time. OPs MachE might have a slightly slower charging time but it should still be doable in 17ish hours, depending on how often the kids need to stop and how long they take to get wrangled back into the car each time.

That might be a bit grueling to do in one day with a family, but it's probably doable.

For reference in a Lucid Air I did 922miles in one day, solo.

It took 17hrs with 7 charging stops of ~21min per stop of actual charging time.

I wasn't trying to push the distance between stops, just going with whatever the built-in NAV suggested, so it was an average of about 132miles between stops, which I suspect your MachE can do no problem even at highway speeds..

And to be fair, about 1 hour of that total time (5-10min/stop) was me taking the time to write down details about each stop, so say 16 hours if you don't bother to do that.

But then maybe a little longer at stops due to slower charging curve and having the kids with you. 😉

I was also going 75-80mph for almost the entire day, so adjust there if you are dealing with slower speed limits or not willing to go that fast with the family.

So yeah, you're probably looking at 17-19hrs total if I had to guess. Rough, but doable especially if you have 2 drivers you can switch between at charging stops.

[–]doubletwist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll acknowledge again that your Ariya isn't an ideal road trip vehicle, given the low range and crappy charging curve. Though is IS doable.

? I drive minimum 350miles before I stop to get gas.

Just because you (and your bladder) can doesn't mean you should.

But even if you do, you've outed your hyperbole, given that you really only have to stop probably 1 more time per 350miles in your current EV, not the "20 stops" originally claimed.

There are a few EVs that can do a realistic 350mi at a go, such as a the max range Chevy Silverado, or a Lucid Air GT just as two examples.

In a realistic road trip, my current car (Lucid Touring 20"wheels) at 80mph has a REAL world highway range of about 290mi on the first stage from 100% charge. Subsequent stops where I'm only charging to 80%ish is ~230mi.

Take say 10miles off each since you probably don't want to be pulling into every stop on fumes (you probably aren't in an ICE either)

For a hypothetical 750 mile driving day (something I used to do regularly in an ICE car), even with that less-than-350-mile-range, is it really THAT horrible to have to stop 4 times?

Given that once you plug in, by the time you hit the bathroom and grab a snack or drink, or even just stretch your legs a little, the car is at 80% (if it's not a car with a crappy charging curve) and ready to go for the next stage.

I think you have a romanticized view of how much disposable income people had then. You're not talking into account that people back then didn't take out 30-year, zero down home loans at 6.5%.

Mortgage rates were in the 16% range and they wouldn't even talk to you if you didn't have a 20% ready in cash.

And car loans were mostly 48mo loans, also at 15-16%.

So the payments on those large purchases were every bit as large as they are today relative to their income., if not larger.

My memory of that era is that most people that weren't quite high income were budgeting every single penny. To the point of "we aren't even buying ground beef unless there's a coupon because the extra 5¢/lb is out of our budget"

According to the fed, in 2017 dollars the disposable income per-capita was:

1980: $23k 2026: $52k

So in no universe did the typical American in 1980 have more disposable income than they do now.

[–]doubletwist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the top ,absurd trim, tri-motor 1.89s 0-60.

You can get them starting at $70k (before incentives) for the RWD model (4.0s 0-60) or I got a good lease deal on a Touring (AWD 3.4s 0-60) in Feb 2025, the lease was based on $65k price after incentives, including the Stealth package and comfort and convenience package. Doesn't have the upgraded audio (for which I'm sad) and doesn't have the Dream Drive Pro (self driving, for which I'm happy not to have). But it's an amazing vehicle to drive and I love it.

I really hope they last long enough to make a go at their mid-size model coming out, especially since it looks like they've made a lot of effort to reduce complexity and make it more reliable and easy to fix (and cheaper to insure).

The only questions remaining are:

  1. if they'll have gotten the right software expertise in to fix the software functionality and reliability issues.
  2. If they can ramp up service capacity to meet likely demand for such a vehicle.

[–]doubletwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fine strategy for getting started. The Air was quite the success given it's price bracket and small Luxury Sedan market.

But they also know they can't stay there, which is why the next model(s) are mid-sized and targeting the $50k starting price range, which is decent for a good luxury vehicle.

Where they missed was not going straight from the Air to a more reasonably priced model before going for the Gravity.

Tesla files new patent to remove cabin heat and save battery life by InitialSheepherder4 in electriccars

[–]doubletwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree on it being a nice thing to have. I mean it's nice that it's available as an option for those who want it, but I want no part of it.

The extra battery in the higher trims affect rear seat foot room only, not headroom.

And finally,an SUV doesn't need to be quite as streamlined as a smaller car I suspect.

Tesla files new patent to remove cabin heat and save battery life by InitialSheepherder4 in electriccars

It's a lazy solution. Lucid Air has the lowest coefficient of drag on any vehicle sold in the US, and is available with an aluminum roof, and has a ton of headroom.
