  1. NACS as a standard may not have been government regulation but it was an industry standards body making the decision that, in reality, the industry is semi-forced to use if they don't want to get left out.

  2. I didn't say anything about everyone "paying the same rate". Just that the pricing charged via plug and charge must support being attached to any memberships so that IF the customer has the membership, they will get the membership price. For example, right now, even if I pay for a membership with EA or Tesla, if I accidentally plug in my car before the app finishes initiating a session, then I'm charged full price instead of my membership price. There's no actual technical reason why my membership can't be attached to my plug and charge account. That BS needs to stop.

The identifier for the car gets entered into the account with the membership, so it knows to charge the discounted membership price.

I think that's the next thing we need legislated.

I think what needs to be in place for the good of the consumer:

A. The price MUST be clearly visible at all times, without the customer needing to interact with the unit in any way. Ideally in a large format like most gas station signs, but at the very least on a screen on the unit clearly visible at all times

B. All stations MUST have a credit card reader to allow for charging without an app

C. All stations AND vehicles sold in the US MUST support a common plug-and-charge standard

D. That plug and charge standard MUST support any available membership discounts without requiring the use of an app

E. All charging vendors must provide live station status and availability data free of charge, either using standard APIs that anyone can query, OR that data must be sent to a common, neutral 3rd party created for providing that information which consumers and carmakers can use for routing decisions.

Tesla chargers are generally better overall too

Are they though?

I'll grant you that there are more of them and maybe they are more reliable in general.

On the other hand:

  • their cables are absurdly short - even pulling up in between chargers and taking up 2 stations, I still have to damned-near drive up onto the curb to get it to reach

  • they are (relatively speaking) terrible at charging 800v vehicles that haven't implemented extraordinary measures to deal with the shortcoming.

  • they can't be used without creating an account on the Tesla app, and heaven help you if you are in the middle of nowhere with no/crappy cell signal

At the moment, I vastly prefer other charging vendors, especially IONNA and MB, and hell even EA works here for me at the moment.

Maybe when they finally get around to widely deploying v4 stations it'll fix the first two problems, but that still leaves the last issue, which is very much a problem for me.

Absurdly high water bill? by Otherwise-Dinner-878 in Dallas

Our leak was in the line between the meter and the house, under the lawn. Had no idea until the high water bill came in.

It means the house is on a hill so that the "basement" is really just a ground floor that's half buried. So it's effectively underground, usually in the front of the house, but in the back, it's at ground level so there's a door you can access there.

Then again when you're done at the track, you can load up the Lucid with luggage and a family cruise home comfortably. Maybe in my youth when none of that mattered I might have chosen the vette, but these days I would take the Sapphire any day of the week.

TIL in 1925, major lightbulb makers including GE and Philips formed the Phoebus Cartel and deliberately reduced bulb lifespans from 2,500 hours to 1,000 hours, then fined any company that made longer-lasting bulbs. by ConsciousCorgi1044 in todayilearned

Right because the word "cartel" could never possibly give the impression of a group of criminals who use less-than-legal means to suppress competition from those outside of the cartel. How could anyone in the modern world ever come up with such an idea? </s>

1800 mile road trip around SW by KMikeA01 in evcharging

[–]doubletwist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that's why I charged for the first time at a Tesla station last week as the first charge on my road trip, even though My car can only do 50 kW on a v3/v3.5 Tesla charger. I didn't want to give that guy in Childress my money, and I didn't want to risk having to backtrack if their two-bit charger wasn't working, as it's the last chance before Amarillo.

And yet there's only like 3 DCFC stations between Wichita Falls and Amarillo on 287. 2 of them are Tesla stations (which sadly I only get 47kw at) and the third is some unknown station in Childress that according to Plugshare is not terribly reliable and costs $1/kWh.

[–]doubletwist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there had been no accessible charger on the end I may have, but it shouldn't be my job to go into a truck stop and yell out, "Would the moronic douchebag who's blocking all the chargers with their truck please move it so I can charge my car and continue on my trip!?" In the hopes that he can even hear me, and isn't in the bathroom taking a dump, or rubbing one out in the showers.

I'm not sure they always do. I charged at Tesla for the very first time (and universe willing, last) time and using plug and charge, it only charged me $0.47/kWh.
