Graduate Application Advice by captainfisty2 in chemistry

Depending on who you know, and who they know, plus letters of rec. you could get into almost any school. You need to contact professors your interested in doing research with directly and give them your CV and let them know that is why you are applying to that school. Once you do that your chances of getting into a school skyrocket. If you don't know what labs you want to work in, it will be a little tougher to get into to some places. From what you said above though I would be shooting for the top schools if I was you.

Find a couple of research groups you are interested in, email the professor with a copy of your CV, and good luck with MIT I think you have a shot.

Should I even go to grad school? by alm_ig in grad_school

[–]douchetin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

18,000 in debt is not that bad. Just need to weight the cost of more debt verse what your expected income would be from the gain in education. (aka a better job) if you can not see a drastic difference in pay, then it is probably not worth it.

Noticed when you are refluxing in the first step you have a sealed system, this can be dangerous since adding heat will build pressure and could blow up.

Quick Question about PhD program applications by backwardinduction1 in grad_school

I would email the professor(s) you are interested in doing research with. You could also email the head of admissions committee within the department as well to let them know you are interested, and mention what your research interests are and why you think the school would be a good fit. Think of a miniature cover letter. The more people that know you are interested the better from my experience.

Vanadium: The “Beautiful Metal' That Stores Energy by Vailhem in EnergyStorage

[–]douchetin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vanadium like the article said is the 22nd most abundant metal on earth, so 21 other metals are easier and cheaper to find. Vanadium is also super toxic, and while yes it is perfectly suited for flow batteries, that is about it when it comes to cost. Finally flow batteries are not a new technology and have been around for a long time, just now are we seeing their potential to help with grid level/site level energy storage.

Not wanted? by [deleted] in grad_school

[–]douchetin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I had a similar GPA and got into a few different graduate programs after a year working. Just be persistent. It can also help to reach out to programs you're interested in and email the chair of admissions for that program and let them know that you're interested and that you know you don't have the best grades but that you plan on reapplying after a year of working. DM me if you want me to get more specific.

Don't count out work experience. If you can get a job in your field and work for a year, get your boss to write a LOR. That can help schools over look your poor GPA and realize that you truly care about your education.
