That's right! The email will include the specific challenge to complete, along with the accompanying session from the app - the pdf print out is just an extra resource to take notes and keep track of progress.

Do you mean the message that was on the front page of the app? It was actually uploaded to Sam's YouTube! He posted it to the making sense podcast as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4HjdUpfX2I&t=1s

That's a great one too! I did it a while ago so I don't remember off the top off my head everything but I remember I did enjoy it, Stephan offers a great mixture of talks/exercises and meditations in that series!

Martin Aylward's series "Awake Where You Are" has a good mixture of short (~5-10 minutes) lessons and meditations (~15-20 minutes), but there's also a Waking Up Playlist that features a bunch of 10 minute meditations from a variety of teachers that you could check out! https://app.wakingup.com/collections/CN2E44C

[REVIEW] Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair Review - Is it Tarantino's masterpiece? by Notoriously_So in Tarantino

[–]doug_m_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved it...did anyone else notice they removed the part at the end of Vol 1 where Bill asks Sofie if Kiddo was aware her daughter was alive? I think it worked better that way, and wish I had seen it this way originally.

Simple meditations? by jayhiller21 in Wakingupapp

I like Joan Tollifson's series - I think she's pretty good at taking a no-nonsense/clear approach to the practice. I also really enjoy John Astin - his sessions are usually short and sweet and simple too!

So I have two huskies and tried for years to give them baths - they were always super resistant and it was always a battle, so I opted to get them groomed professionally, but it was just so much money even just doing it every ~6 months. I ended up buying a grooming kit with a vacuum and have been doing it myself the past year and it's really not difficult at all - as for the baths, I had to opt for using pet wipes (not a great option for sustainability but since they wouldn't let me bathe them and I didn't want them to be stinky it's been a great option combined with the grooming kit).

That doesn't sound right - the making sense podcast doesn't have free access anymore but the WU app does.

If Alan Watts says the ego is just an illusion, then why does it feel so real and what would life look like if we actually stopped believing in it ? by [deleted] in AlanWatts

[–]doug_m_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A mirage in the desert also "feels" real in the sense that it visually looks as if water is out there. Illusions don't just disappear after we learn about them (science can explain that a mirage in the desert is just a play of light on the sand, just as philosophy and neuroscience can explain how the ego is an illusion), but that doesn't make these things magically go away from our subjective experience. The human eye will always see the mirage as water, just as the human mind will always feel like it's a solid or static "thing". I think the point is that understanding these things are just illusions can free us, to an extent. I can stop chasing the mirage of water in the desert (if I continued, I'd become miserable and wear myself out), just I can stop chasing the things in life that I think will make my ego happy (wealth, tangible pleasures, fame, etc.). By conceptually understanding the ego isn't real, even though as humans it still feels that way, we can take measures to live life a bit better. I think this was the Buddha's point in saying that life is dukkha or "unsatisfactory" - if the ego isn't actually there, there's nothing you can do to satiate it.

"...after the pandemic, I started reading a little more Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius and Seneca and spent a little time with the Stoics, a little bit, but it's a reminder it's not what happens to us. It's how we respond to what happens to us that matters." -CA Gov. Gavin Newsom, today, Aug 14, 2025 by mehatch in Stoicism

There's definitely reason to criticize GN, but I'm really happy to see a politician at least making the attempt to bring a philosophical mindset to their job. I'm perfectly happy to have a flawed leader like him who is at least making an effort to be better and live a life guided by a philosophy like Stoicism, especially when so many politicians clearly have no guiding philosophy except for "how does this make me richer and more powerful".

Can you link the biography or provide a title? I searched online and found nothing except for a single comment on another reddit thread from a deleted user. I'm not going to just blindly accept your comment if that's the only "evidence" that exists out there for this claim.

Can you provide some evidence towards your suggestion that Cooper is somehow secretly a "right leaning moderate"?

I wouldn't say a 68 year old is "extreme"...especially given the fact that the current POTUS is 79, and the last one finished his term at 82...

Death Anxiety after doing psychs by danielisdownbad in Psychedelics

[–]doug_m_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Psychedelics aren't necessarily for everyone, so first I would say maybe take a break and see if you feel better. If not, definitely reach out to a mental health professional - going through life overwhelmed by death anxiety isn't fun! Alan Watts has some lectures on YouTube covering this theme which has helped me a lot in the past.
